Jaffa, we are only playing smaller home games there. Our home games agaisnt Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond and St.Kilda, are all at the "G". The AFL has stated that the Ess v Kangaroos match will likely be shifted.

All Essendon fans will get into the new stadium. There will be room for everyone. Anything expected to exceed the capacity will be shifted, but a lot of the games are agaisnt interstate clubs so they won't need to be shifted.

Like I said, all Essendon supporters will get in. If anyone misses out (and that's hard to imagine given that the stadium is the seconfd biggest AFL stadium in the country), they will be opposition supporters.

Essendon is paying 9 games at Colonial and 9 at the MCG. Now that is definately looking after your supporters. As a supporter of Essendon, I've got to be pleased with that. We get the best of both worlds. I mean, we are still playing 9 matches at the MCG for crying out loud, and they are all huge matches !

Jealous ?

What about our game Dan?
Given that we got a huge (60000+?) crowd for the round 13 game, and that was on a horrible (Melbourne) cold, wet, Friday night, and the result was never really in doubt, wouldn't you expect this years crowd to be more than 52,000 too?
It's my understanding that no Eagles supporters or members will be able to go to that game unless they are Colonial members. Is this correct? If so, that's really not fair. We (WCE) have a waiting list for memberships up to 12,000 (~10 years) people long, but always allocate a large number of seats to interstate supporters. If you can't extend the same courtesy then the game should be shifted.

Ciao.

Eagle Fan, when West Coast played Essendon at the MCG in 1999, there was 55,000 people there (Collingwood couldn't dream of getting that)

That figure includes approx. 5-6000 MCC members who contribute nothing financially. These MCC members can only go to the game becasue it is at the MCG, otherwise, they wouldn't be allowed to go.

At Colonial, these MCC members wouldn't be part of the crowd, so there will easily be enough room for Eagles and Bomber fans in a 52,000 seat stadium in Victoria.

That crowd of 55,000 on a Friday night is just about the maximum you would expect from and Eagles-Bombers Home and away match anyway.

You talk like the Eagles sell out Subi every week ! If you look at attendances, you will notice that this is far from the case. Whether this is becasue members just don't turn up, or what, there are always a few games where the crowd at the 42,000 seat Subiaco is in the low 30,000's. Have a look at the crowds from last year

Collingwood played West Coast in 1990 at Waverley Park in a final and the crowd was 58,000.
Essendon played West Coast in 1995 at Waverley Park in a final and the crowd was 36,000.
1.2 millions supporters and yet only 28,000 members. Why is this so?

He's living in a fantasy land of make believe.

All of these figures have been pulled straight out of his arse.

1.2 million supporters for Essendon, 700,000 for Carlton. I don't remember the AFL undertaking a national poll of football supporters.

Why was there only 36,000 at Waverley for that Essendon-West Coast final?

I seem to remember a club great being booed off the ground that day.

You can have all the supporters you like if that's the way you want to treat your own players.

You've got 28,000 members and about 1 million barrackers.

I had a look at the Collingwood web site just now and noticed the 40,000 by 2000 icon. Fat chance. Especially as the web site isn't working properly. Anyone wanting to join Collingwood on-line would probably give up, thinking this is just another example of how unprofessional the club has become.

The new website will be on-line early Feb so check back then to feed your obsession.

For a club that is apparently so despised we certainly seem to attract great interest.

I guess it must be hard when the other 15 clubs have to fight for every inch of publicity.

Please tell everyone where you get your figures from Dan24? As i recall, the AFL gave figures out a couple of seasons ago and quoted Essendon as having about 1 million supporters and Collingwood and Carlton having about 900,000 each.

Typical

People are jealous of Essendons support, so they accuse me of making stuff up. As a member of Essendon, I have receoved numerous letters including one, indicating that through their own survey they have about 1.2 million supporters Australia wide. More than any other club. I heard John Elliot say that they want to convert a few more of Carltons 700,000 supporters into members.

A morgan Gallup poll was conducted back in 1993 indicating Essendon was the most popular club. And this was before the effects of a premiership had started to sink in ! The Bombers, having made the finals 4 out of the last 5 years have increased their support since then, while Collingwoods support has waned.

The figures are there if you are prepared to search for them.

Concerning that Essendon-West Coast game at Waverly in 1995. Thank God Essendon was in it becasue no other club would have got more than 30,000. Under the final 8 system, that match up between 4th and 5th was virtually meaningless because BOTH clubs were going to the second week regardless of whether they won or lost. Where is the motivation to attend ?

You'll notive the next season (1996), Essendon met West coast in the second week of the finals at the MCG and played in front of 86,000 people.

In 1999, Carlton , in identical circumstances also met West Coast in the second week of the finals at the MCG. The crowd was about 55,000.

Neither match should have been at the MCG. Both matches should have been at Subiaco, but that is not the point.

What I am stating is not a matter of opinion. It is cold hard fact. Essendon is the most popular club. End of story.

MK, you would probably be awrre that in 1990, Essendon also played West Coast in a final at Waverley. Don't you think this is a more apprpriate comparison, given that it was in the same year as your Collingwood-West Coast example ? Or don't you think logically ?

The crowd betweenm Essendon and West Coast in the 1990 preliminary final was virtually identical to the Collingwood-West Coast Qualifying final 3 weeks earlier, 56,000, or thereabouts, after we were coming off a 10 goal loss the previous week.

See my earlier post about Ess v WCE getting 86,000 in 1996. Does that make you jealous ?

Membership fluctuates year to year. In the mid 90's Essendon had Victorias strongest membership. Based on their succesful 1999, Essendon membership should push beyond 35,000 this year.

If you have ever been to a big Essendon game, you will know what the Essendon army is all about.

Man you are funny!!! I don't seem to remember the whole of Australia being polled on who they support(they certainly didnt ask me). Stop using your Bullshit figure and piss off! I seem to remember crowd figures dropping something like 6% last year, wonder why, couldn't have been they Collingwood was last was it? Hmmm, another thing, I'm sure if Collingwood was a successful as Essendon in winning as many games, then our crowds would be the same as yours, IF not more! Stick ya figures and get into the real world!

Joel, you speak utter crap. If you look at the figures I have provided, you will notice I don't include 1999 crowd figures, because it was unfair to draw a comparison, due to Collingwoods poor form. Have a look at My Ess v Syd, and Coll v Syd examples from 1998.

I don't care if you havn't been surveyed yourself. Don't you have any idea how surveys are conducted ?? They don't literally survey all 19 million Australians. Random samples are taken, and estimates are then made.

I'm sure all the clubs would have undertaken their own surveys over the years, to provide them with info on the amount of supporters they have, and possible markets they can infiltrate. Essendon is no different. That 1.2 million is an estimate of Essendons support around the country, from their own analysis

In 1999, you may have seen the Herald-Sun survey showing Essendon has 16 percent of the supporters in Melbourne, and 20 % of those under 20 years of age.

You have to remember, support is generated through many, many years of success. If it was generated from one, or two years, then the Knagaroos would have the most support. They have very little support, becasue they have won only 4 Grand Finals. Their support is growing however. It will take many years though.

Hawthorn, only now is starting to feel the effects of the success they had in the 80's. All the little kids who wanted to barrack for the successful Hawthorn are now in their early 20's and are buying memberships.

The reason Essendon support is so big, is through 100 years, they have won 15 premierships. They have always had strong support. Collingwood has won 14, but has won only one in the last 41 season, so their supporrt naturally has been dropping.

Trust me, Essendon has the most supporters, and it will stay that way, with 20% of Melbourne youth barracking for the Bombers.

20% of melbourne youth follow matthew lloyd. 15% of those are most likely female. figures can be changed to suit..........

Hawthorn will overtake. As you state hawthorn is some 25 years younger (60 years if you consider it took till 61 to win a flag) Essendon have put a 35-40,000 upper limit on the membership by playing most Home games at melbourne. You may end up like Man utd or Newcastle utd where only males can afford the time or money to go every week. Where will the future growth come from then ? It will be dads only at colonial games and the kids go only when they play at the G

Split the league into groups

Traditional clubs with big support no matter what:

Essendon Carlton Collingwood

Traditional clubs with fluctuating support depending on success, but not enough success to sustain that:

Geelong St Kilda Richmond Melbourne

New Vic clubs which can get success and big crowds

Hawthorn

New Vic clubs which cannot get big crowds even if successful ie most in danger - even keep changing names

North Western

Interstate clubs with captive markets sustaining support

Adelaide West Coast Port

Interstate clubs needing constant AFL support (extinct otherwise_

Sydney, Brisbane, Fremantle

Dan- so getting back to the original point, if Essendon-WestCoast games seem to always attract large crowds (you seem pretty proud of the 86,000), then surely our game should be played at the MCG? It is a game that a lot of WA-based Eagles fans will go to (you know, the yearly pilgrimage to the 'G!). As members we are offered special deals to various games, and this year, the Essendon game is by far the most popular. (I mean why pay 100's of dollars and fly for 6 hours just to see Collingwood?). Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised to see a sellout, which I'm sure would be more than slightly embarrassing to the AFL!

Even when the crowds at Subi are in the low 30,000's it's still technically a sellout. I don't know why members wouldn't turn up, but the tickets are supposedly non-tranferrable, so I can't lend mine to a friend when I'm sick or on holidays. Stupid, isn't it? As much as it pains me to admit it, we have a lot of 'corporate members'. That may also explain the dissapointing crowds.
But our 'small' crowds are still more than the normal crowds of several Melbourne clubs! (Not Essendon though, so don't get all defensive!)

OK we're getting off topic here - please open a new topic on comparitive popularity of clubs, reasons for these popularity differences and how this is reflected in memberships and crowd attendences.

This topic is about the behaviour of supporters from various clubs.
