Will history judge Luke Hodge as the worst Norm Smith Medalist ever? Let's keep in mind there is a strong school of thought that he wasn't BOG anyway.
We all know he was very average in his first 3 years of his AFL career. his supporters claim OP, however is this a convenient excuse to hide his shortcomings.
He is slow, hopelessly one sided and has only looked comfortable in the easy role of unaccountable half back basically playing without an opponent.
If he cannot master having an opponent, after already having failed in the midfield; will he revert to a half forward flanker whose main role is to prevent truly creative players from setting up the play?

I think its a little too early to call, but the writing is on the wall.
He has been soundly beaten by Logan, Carrazzo and Monfries in the last 3 games. Hardly household names.

EDIT

Apologies for the confusion. My bad.
I didn't mean that he played badly on grand final day. He absolutely revelled in the role of roaming across the half back line without an opponent.
He set a benchmark. He is the first Norm Smith medalist not to have an opponent. All unaccountable players who are used to set up play for the truly creative play makers will be measured against Hodge.

What I was saying was; Will we look back and say Hodge was the worst Norm Smith medalist over his career.
I acknowledge Embley is a rival. Embley, however played in a star studded midfield and at the time was rated very highly. The last few years may judge Embley harshly but we are yet to see Hodge play in a side bereft of quality midfielders as Embley now does. In fact quality midfielders is the reson Hodge can't get a game there. Mitchell, Sewell, Lewis, Tuck, Bateman, Ellis, McGlynn, Moss, Rioli, Osborne, Ladson and potentially Muston all are keeping Hodge out of the "Kitchen". Hodge is next in line

Isn't the Norm Smith Medal an award given for one game, not the remainder or beginning of a career?

Why would anyone call anyone the worst Norm Smith medallist?

You know what he meant.

Rephrased - Is Luke Hodge one of the worst players over the course of his career to have received the Norm Smith Medal.

I disagree but I guess it's a legitimate question.

Played an absolute blinder and deserved every vote he got last year. Is an absolute gun. Yuk thread.

Was going to start a thread on Hodge, but you beat me to it.

Very average at playing "accountable" football.

Is going down the Shaw, Bowden and Gilbee path. Great at playing loose man back, but put a player on them and they struggle to have any impact.

Its not like Monfries is even playing a shut down roll on him tonight, he is just purely beating him on on one.

Hodge has been out of form all year so far and tonight has been his worst game. Dropping easy marks, spilling the ball etc.

A more appropriate thread title might have been .. "Is Luke Hodge an average accountable footballer"

he actually played on key forwards in his day, at his best was playing on jon brown, lucas etc:cool:

Worst post ever?

Do you have a clue...did you watch that day?

He's having a bad patch...everyone does.

Is Fevola the worst kick in the league...just because he missed that match winning kick?

Get a clue fool.

Look he was great in the GF.

This year however he's been fairly average...against average opponents. When he's not manned up he chops as you'd expect.

Why isn't he at the coalface playing on the ball?

Looks like he's struggling with injuries at the moment. Just seems lethargic in his movements and presence on the ground. Top 10 player when fit, so no he's not the worst Norm Smith ever. Weird thread topic.

You have just illustrated how little you actually know about football.

Wouldn't make the top 100 on form atm.

One of the most over rated footballers of recent times. Like the Hawthorn zone, he has been found out.

So many fools got suckered into believing this guy was a top 5 player in the league, based on one game. Good all- round player who exhibits brilliance in patches= Luke Hodge... now and forever more. It is brutally funny watching sides play through his opponent, as he is as inept as I have seen in terms of man-on-man defensive ability. He is exhibiting why I despise when the media credit these "sheepdog" role footballers too prematurely.

Hodge certainly has never hurt Collingwood. I always laugh when people try to suggest he is now as good as Judd. Sorry - but he aint! As you say, hopelessly one sided, tough - and good on him, it seems this is main strength - and has been able to play that easy, unmanned back pocket position. I will believe when he moves into the center square and dominates for a prolonged period of time - a la Judd, Voss, Buckley, Hird. Otherwise, stand in queue.
Happy to be disputed.

You're kidden right. He was BOG when we played the Pies early in 08. He went off with a hamstring late in the 2nd or early in the 3rd quarter with 15 possesions and 6 inside 50's plus 2 goals.

Very dumb thread.

And I add - how many possessions would Dane Swan accumulate in the back pocket umnanned? I start to think he would nudge Peter Featherby for greatest number of possessions in a game. Alas, Swan has to battle at coal face where the heat of the battle is at its greatest as he is our best hope.
