How can you compare someone like Banfield who has played for over a decade with someone who was drafted just last year and has played a maximum of two games? It's not meaningful.
The best approach would be do to a survey of say the period from 1990 up to 2000. The reason for stopping at 2000 would be to allow each player selected at least 4 years to accumulate enough games to make some comparisons worthwhile and then to look at average stats. Even these would not be directly comparable because of different styles of play, different positions played etc.
Probably the most valid statistic in ranking the number 1 draft picks would be to compare for a period of 10 years.....eg 1990-2000 every number 1 draft pick with each other, and then also with the other top 10 draft picks of their individual year.
Let me know how you get on.

Goddard. I know he hasn't been in the game for that long but hasn't shown anything particular that he can do really well i.e Riewoldt marking, Gaspar stopping (Not now but once he was very good at it), Jeff White rucking and so on.

thank you very much for another meaningful and interesting contribution to a thread

if the collingwood board is the only place you find interesting, i suggest you stay there.

but i guess there is only so much you can add to the "are we really bottom 4" and "sack malthouse" threads. why not start a "why we will go top 4" or "premiership threat" thread like those of a few weeks ago, during the preseason. they were hilarious.
