Coming from a supporter of a team that doesn't bottom out to stay competitive, I have huge respect for Geelong. The way your mob continuously challenges and stays at the top of their game is exactly how this game should be played. No excuses, no five year plans, no stocking up on top 10 picks and trying to create some premature super dynasty. Just astute drafting and planning and building a winning culture.

You might have had some luck along the way with father-sons, but even without them Geelong would still have been a consistent finals team which is a credit in itself. I'll admit I did tip the Hawks today. They're very talented and could have snatched another flag last year, but Geelong (like Sydney) are a better team and don't rely on any one player to get them over the line.

This isn't a grovel thread because our teams meet soon, but just a little acknowledgement from an opposition supporter that's still stunned by how you guys keep coming. Assuming neither side suffers any big injuries over the next fortnight our encounter in round 4 could be an epic.

Enjoy the streak against the Hawks. Any win over them is so sweet.

Pretty sure that for most Geelong supporters, the feelings are mutual regarding the Swans. I was thinking a couple of years ago how I wanted the Cats to be like Sydney and simply refuse to bottom out and be competitive no matter what, and thus far it is working to plan (knock on wood.)

I know what your trying to say,but yesterday if it wasn't for the skipper loading the whole side on his shoulders your tip would have been right.

Thanks for the post.. To gain you have to give.. but imagine if we still had Mummy, Gaz that we have had and lost....
Will be a big year for both teams i feel...

Go Catters

Cheers DA. I'm still buzzing today, so proud of the boys.

Sydney is my second favourite team and I think there are a lot of parallels between the two in terms of never bottoming out, a successful culture and a never waning desire to win.

I will say Sydney are one of my fav teams, but I will add No Salary cap concessions.

DA , I thank you for your post. Yes we do try stay competitive , hence our record of no picks lower than 7 for over 20 years.:thumbsu:

And i do acknowledge that non-geelong people see our FS as luck. You were at least polite saying "some". Plenty of FS turn out to be little other than drain on resources and a waste of time. Some clubs love the idea getting a FS when they gun kids. The only "Luck" I will agree with you on was in 2006 , the system had rules that FS were to be picked on a R3 pick. So we used our R3 pick on Hawkins and used our R1 on Selwood. The change since then would mean this would be impossible. Ablett and Scarlett were not so obvious when drafted and our system has as much to do with their success as their bloodlines. Plenty of FS's have been drafted higher rated and did little to nothing.

Basically our clubs have the same goal. (although doing it slightly differently). The delusions of riches in draft picks do little if you are just throwing another apple in a rotten barrel. There are reason why late picks and recycled players work better at our clubs than others. While that is maintained both our clubs will be always pressing for a finals position.;)

When I hear so called experts say Geelong's reign must end and the slide will begin, I remind them of the Swans' record. Cats and Swans are proof that you don't need to bottom out.

I would even go as far to say we HAVE "bottomed out" already, last year.
We are back on the way up IMO which is just amazing and a massive credit to everyone who works at the Cats.
Get on bronze stocks now because in 5-10 years time there are going to be 1000 bronze statues out the front of KP.

Classy post OP; Sydney are definitely my 2nd favourite team, there are a lot of similarities to the Cats with the way they go about things and their generally low-key, team-first approach.
Also, the fact that you guys secured your 2nd flag in the AFL era at the expense of Hawthorn makes me love Sydney just that little bit more ;)

I'm pretty sure we did have a five year plan. Good to Great. The difference between our five year plans to other clubs is we followed through. :)
haha burn!
