The Zebras beat last years premiers Nth Ballarat today at TBO by 9 points.
Last practice match againt Bendigo at Bendigo next week.

Does that mean we're now looking good for 2009 finders? ;)

From what I read on Saintsational it sounds like X was best on ground and if true should be an automatic inclusion for his brother. If Hayes is fit, you would think the players that would come under consideration to be dropped would be Gwilt, Jones, Geary or McQualter.

Dont know after all its only a practice match but looking a lot better and hopefully the Zebs will be up there pushing for another flag in 2009.

I am looking to nip down to the "beach" on Sunday for a squizz, so let me know if there are any particular players you want me to watch.

Hopefully I can spot up the boys in different colours!

Some guy from Casey said:
SANDRINGHAM v CASEY SCORPIONS (Trevor Barker Beach Oval - Sunday, 2.00 pm)

Intrigue surrounds the changes in these clubs' AFL alignments as much as the game itself. Sandringham won four premierships while aligned with Melbourne, but could benefit from St Kilda's more experienced list. Crucial too is the retainment of mature-aged players, as Peter Summers takes over the captaincy from the much admired Chad Liddell. Casey's defence was a highlight last season, and both Alex Silvagni and James Wall are still at Casey Fields. The changes over summer could prove difficult though for rookie coach Peter German, who will have to integrate a lot of green Melbourne recruits into his Casey side. Verdict: Sandringham by 33 points

....

final score sandringham Vs Casey

Sandy 25-16-166

Casey 8-15-63

A dusty 200 points worth of victory for all things St.Kilda this weekend!

I went to see the second half. Two St Kilda players were very impressive (Sandy's Nick Sautner was also very good - not sure how many goals he ended up with, I think he had five in the second half)

X Clarke was a class above the rest (but he looks so fragile) - he is really pressing for selection into the firsts (I just don't know who to drop for him).

Maguire's marks and long kicks were also a class above VFL level (and he really is a fine specimen of a human being) - should not be too far away from playing his 100th for St Kilda.

In other matters, it was great to see Russell Robertson back on a football ground after rupturing his achilles tendon last year (I had the same injury with surgery five months ago and would not even think about playing football - heck, just running is still a real struggle). He did not get a lot of the ball (Scorps were smashed in the midfield) and had to cop a few stupid comments from the stands, but it was great to see him out there and I hope he'll be back to AFL level soon (one of the AFL's great entertainers - when not singing).

Mate - the best on ground for Zebra's (Saints) was L.FISHER.

When will this guy get another crack at senior level.

His poise, strong marking, running and skill was 10 times up on any player on the ground today.

He has obviously jumped onto the wrong side of someone on selection as this kid is a gun and will walk into any other side at the end of '09 if we don't use him.

GO FISH!

I listened to a bit of the game and from what I heard (and read on that other saints site ;)) X was excellent again.

I wouldn't drop anyone from the team that played yesterday and we may have got through injury free but the Match Review Panel may give him his opportunity. McEvoy may be the other beneficiary of their findings after what sounded like a pretty good performance today.

We have to bear in mind that like the Eagles the Scorpions are a pretty average team but it was great to hear that Tom Lynch went alright again. He kicked 3 goals and really got himself in the game with and without the ball. You'd imagine he'll be one of the first in line for a game should we suffer a few injuries.

Funny... one said L Fisher was the BOG and the official list doesn't even mention him in the best.....

Makes you wonder how guys like Sautner never make it to AFL level. If one of our listed blokes bagged 8 we'd be jizzing our pants.

Great win considering Casey were a good team last year, great signs from Clarke, Goose, McEvoy, Armitage and Lynch from what I've heard, although it is easy to look good in a win that big.

Last year Casey had our cream - now they've got Melbourne's.

I'm happy with the result, but really, beating Demon-dung is not the be-all-and-end-all.

Yeah I said it - are you that lazy you can't look up 2 previous posts...zeeth!

He play solid all day and I defy anyone that was there to say he was not our best especially in the last qtr.just cut them to pieces and setup 3-4 goals and is super fit.

Other agenda's must go with the best on.

Thought a number of the Zebra aligned players did really well (Crowe, Sautner, #16, Gallagher) - obviously trying to let the Saints boys know they were in the Zebs back yard. Sautner in particular was doing some party tricks including a goalsquare hanger and goal on the siren from around 50m into a tricky breeze.

The Saints :

Eddy - thought he was excellent. Looks very close to AFL selection.

X - 30+ touches. Overdid it a few times i.e. in trying to create the play ran himself into trouble. He'd be happy with his game though - ran hard and hopefully has pulled up well.

Macca - he's got great hands. Needs to get to more contests and rucking is work-in-progress.

Heyne - very clever but workrate is not AFL standard yet. Looks to have filled out.

Lynch - dropped marks he should have taken and still very light. But can get around the ground and kicked 2 goals in a minute.

Ooh Aah - quite a prospect. Nearly ran down a smaller player over 40m (great athlete). Obviously does the silly things a gangly guys does sometimes but holds some genuine hope for the future. No weight on the bones yet (I could spare him 10kgs).

Goose - very assured as you'd expect. Read the play well and took a number of marks at CHB. Thought his kicking was average - too casual for mine. But good signs all the same.

Armo - dominated early but got a knock. Went on and off a number of times and whilst he got touches looked a little sore.

Gaertner - not bad. Very tall. Quick. Kicking needs work although can kick 50m. Reminds me a little of THE SCHWORRRTZZZ!!!

Begley - nup.

Leigh Fish - solid as usual. Kicked with some precision when others struggled.

Miles - not in the best (for mine) despite newspaper report. Great athletic ability but is very reactive i.e. waits for his man rather than backing himself.

Howard - relatively quiet but may have had a tagging role (wasn't watching closely enough).

Reserves - Haretuku 3 goals (in best players), Stanley 2 goals (BOG), Connors 1 goal, Simpkin & McGarry in the best players. Good signs there although Casey ressies weren't the best last year.

Saw Paul Cahill at the ground (not sure if he played). Didn't see Smith or Steven, but good core of Saints boys were there in support - Roo, Bally, Raph, Monty, BJ, Bakes, Gilbo.

also there were Montagna, Jones ..but big Raph - he may be struggling to get onto the park but not in the 'partner' stakes - wow! Just wish Squizzy had the camera in our area.

Would not get kicked out of bed on a cold night that one ;) Would have been rough if I asked Raph to hold the camera whilst I got my picture taken with her.

AT GROUND: "g'day Raph, can I get a picture of you....oh look would you mind if your partner stands next to you and fills the gap....THANKS!

AT HOME: Edit - Cut - Paste = Squizzy at Sandy with his new friend - WOW!

From the Saints website:

Zebras start with a bang

Sandringham has powered to a resounding Round 1 win over St Kilda's former affiliate the Casey Scorpions. The Zebras kicked nine goals in the first term to set up the 103 point victory against an undermanned Casey side.

Xavier Clarke was again one of the best on ground with 34 touches and 10 tackles while fellow Saints Robert Eddy and David Armitage also impressed with 29 and 24 possessions respectively. Ben McEvoy dominated the ruck with 18 hit outs and full forward Nick Sautner booted eight goals.

Luke Miles did a superb job nullifying Russell Robertson, keeping him to just one goal while Brad Howard and Pete Summers were also pivotal to
Sandringham's complete control of the game which saw the home side apply searing pressure throughout all four quarters.

Matt Maguire was again solid at centre-half-back as he continues to rebuild and push his claim for senior selection.

Sandringham coach Andy Lovell said, "I was particularly impressed with the work rate and endeavour shown by our players throughout the entire match. A nine goal opening term set up the win, but we didn't let up all game which was a great sign.

"Casey were missing some of their regular players, but I was extremely satisfied with the way our players approached the game which now gives us some momentum heading into Round 2."
