Sandringham vs. Geelong
Sunday 24th May
Trevor Barker Beach Oval at 2:00 PM

Sandringham

B : Biddlecombe Miles Hudghton
HB : Steven Maguire Simpkin
C : Paterakis Summers Gallagher
HF : Heyne Lynch Smith
F : Tregear Sautner S. Clarke
R : Stanley L. Fisher Begley
Int : McEvoy Armitage Howard Dean Gwilt McQualter R. Clarke Garrubba Monaghan Geary King R. Eddy

Never given it a lot of thought - but going by the Saints players on the bench it is pretty obvious who are the ppl just holding onto their spots at the selection table... Or so it would seem.

Good to see Smith and Simpkin holding spots in the 1s for Sandy.

They're low picks which we shouldn't expect too much from, but going on recent years recruiting, who knows; they could end up decent players as Geary, Eddy and Jones have.

Smith in particular, I reckon he just looks like a footballer. :p

Do you think that it's particularly pertinent that we're playing Geelong in the VFL this week? Maybe this is a tiny taster of Round 14?

I think it's more pertinent that Ross and SOS were at the game last night where really the Doggies should have won as opposed to "star studding" the VFL to a degree.

True. Dogs were great last night and Geelong weren't exactly in cruise control as their fans would like to pretend.

One matchup that might be worth watching for round 14, especially the way Hawkins played last night, is Hudghton vs Lonergan.

Nice from the flaming big man. :thumbsu:

Anyone actually go to today's Zebs game? It would be good to know whether we have to put up with another week of the whining of those with Goose in their dream team. Mebbe not ... just looking at the score we had kicked on us down there.

Good to see our 1st round draft pick Lynch bag 4 and get BOG. If he fire's up over the next month or 2 I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a call up to play that 3rd tall, presenting across half forward. That would give opposition teams a decent headache with lynch in our forward line:thumbsu:

gwilt is holding that position down at the moment and doing a good job even though he doesn't kick goals. Lynch is taller and more mobile and is capable of kicking a bag in a game.

I really rate Stanley as a footballer. He and Macca are our next set of tall timber ruck combinations when king and gardiner call it a day. Gardiner is a gun and still has a few years left while king probably won't go on next season you would think.

Miles, Smith, Armo, Steven, Heyne are name's we will get used to hearing.

Good Future for the saints!:)

I rate Podsiadly very highly, so would suggest Max is "ready" :

Cats' six-goal finish downs Zebras

Brent Diamond | May 25, 2009

Geelong came back from almost seven goals down to inflict one of the comebacks of the season against Sandringham and win by three-points at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

Despite Sandringham having the luxury of rebounding ace Jason Gram as a late inclusion – understood to be dropped for disciplinary reasons – and key posts Matt Maguire and Max Hudghton, the Cats piled on six-final quarter goals to win an epic, 19.11 (125) to 18.14 (122).

The Zebras led by as much as 39-points in the second term before a resounding fightback from the visitors.

The chain of goals began with Trent West, who dominated the ruck with 42 hitouts in what Cats coach Dale Amos describes as “his most commanding performance of the season.”

It finished in the hands of Bell Park player Ben Johnson, who booted eight goals to seal a memorable victory in which Hudghton kept skipper James Podsiadly to one goal which he booted to put the Cats in front in the last.

Johnson, who’s a top-up player on the Cats’ VFL list, kicked two influential final quarter goals including a banana from the boundary to extend the margin to 10-points at the 26 minute mark.

Kane Tenace (33 disposals) and Nathan Djekkurra (28 disposals, nine tackles) were outstanding in the clinches.

Maguire was “serviceable” according to Sandy coach Andy Lovell with 14 disposals, four marks and three behinds, while Gram and Leigh Fisher each had 19 disposals. David Armitage (25 disposals) and Tom Lynch, with four important goals, were also important.

“They were harder and more committed,” Lovell said. “They won the clearances. At one point, we were nearly seven goals in front at one point and went away from our structures and went away from our team disciplines.”

Seems Macca might have got touched up in the ruck. Great to see Armo getting some form back, and Stanley in the best (he just gets better and better).

Settle down brothers.

Just because Lynchy has had one good game for Sandy, it doesn't mean he comes straight in. He needs a month of solid games before he is even considered. David Armitage being the case in point.

I like Gwilt and I believe he's done good things in the matches hes played...

BUT

if there was ever a time to try out a youngster in that third tall position or even give Maguire a crack.. it would be now imo..

I just think Gwilt should be averaging a few more possessions or at least a goal a game..

Dunno about a youngster Darky, but agree that (just as Mini has done) Gwilty should pinch a few more goals than the 3 he's got in 9 games. For a guy who kicks 50m this should be a no-brainer in a well-performing team.

Mini's got 8 goals 3 behinds in 9 games with 36 tackles, Gwilt 3.5 with 25 tackles in same number of games.

I'd prefer BJ up forward a lot more often. Tends to kick and handball blindly alot in traffic - less of an issue up forward where you can have a shot under pressure. We've seen how deadly he is when the kick is not pressured and he's always been able to take a grab.

In his favour Gwilt has scooped up and passed on the ball for a good few goals, often under very high pressure. ( He's getting good at breaking through some pretty strong tackles ).

A Gwilt tackle> A Milney tackle.

He always looks a bit nervous when he has a shot and that is probably why he misses. He needs to score a bit and get some confidence.

deviating away from the thread a little squizzy, I agree to a certain extent with you re: BJ..

BUT

Ive thought in the past that the saints have had a breakdown across half forward - forward of centre.. one way of countering that, is to kick over it and land in the dangerous forward zone.. BJ does this.

the other side to this, is our team is playing pretty good football at the mo, so Ill take it that in spades anyway...
