Carlton people didn't like going there. They struggled to get 20,000 there when a non vic side played there. That is a fair indication of the true number of carlton fans that would show up.

where would you rather go it if you where a fan, MCG, Etihad or optus oval? optus oval was a suburban club by far the best in Australia at the time, but the ground was dated and needed up grading when compared to modern stadiums.
the ground would of only held 25k people fans would be out in the rain, standing up or sidding on wooden bench seats.

Carlton fans used to rave on about the great days of princess park. Once the Legends stand was built in the mid/late 1990's it held 35,000 yet they rarely got 20,000 for games v non vic teams - partly because the fans didn't want to pay the relatively expensive reserved seats in the legend stand. But before the stand the ground capacity was 30,000+ and they struggled to get more than 21-22k when two Vic teams played there.

The numbers speak for themselves.

The Legends stand was built for that reason. They charged a small premium for fans to sit there and it was overwhelmingly rejected by those fans.

You want to know why Metricon is a profitable ground? Have a look at what is costs for a seat. Seats on the wing are $81 for an adult. Yes, eighty-one dollars. The s**t seats are $33, the average seats (eg. pocket/flank) are $50. About 5-10% of the ground is GA, which is of course the low level seats behind the goals.

Victorians would go mental if they were asked to go to a small boutique venue and pay those prices. It's significantly cheaper at Etihad (a much better stadium with infinitely better access), and they complain about the prices there. They sure as s**t wouldn't show up in big numbers.

who knows why, it is a nice stadium that suits the gold coast. the GC is the best place to visit an afl game in winter, as the winters are rather warm. there.
the GCS suns havent released a annual report so it it not really known how financialy rewarding it is. the other reason why it was built as the GC has the commonwealth games on in 3 or 4 years. so it will also be used for them, the grounds capacity will be temporarily boosted up to 40k

Well they have to start filling the ground (or at least most of it) before they can start thinking about turning decent profits. But you're right - it does seem to be a stadium that suits the Gold Coast. As opposed to the freezing winters of Melbourne. But that's why they build the weatherproof Etihad, and that's not exactly universally loved. Which is my point - what on earth makes you think a cheap, small stadium is going to be anything other than hated by the Victorian public?

The GC didn't win the rights to the 2018 Comm Games until November 2011. 6.5 to 7 years is the standard lead time for Olympic and Commonwealth games between the winning bid and hosting the games. The stadium was being constructed irrespective of a win or loss of the 2018 bid. The first game at Carrara was in Rd 8 2011. Winning the Comm games means it will be expanded to 40,000, thats all.

Carrara was built because the AFL went to the GC city council in 2008 and said - in our September 2006 Next Generation Strategy documents we said we would put a team up here in 2015. 8 months after releasing Next Generation Strategy the AFL decided they would go early with a GC team. They told the council we failed to get North up here at the end of 2007 / early 2008, so if you build us a stadium we will put a team up here in 2011. The planning to bid for the Comm Games didn't start until 2010.

etihad is hated because it is different to the MCG. as well as the public know that teams have s**t stadium deals there, and do not like playing there, so fans dislike the place as well. things should change after the AFL takes ownership of it

metricon is a nice stadium it is different to the MCG and etihad and even the geelong stadium, all be it the demountables around the outside of the ground, but it has a nice frendaly relaxed, Canaveral atmosphere when you walk in to the stadium, with bands playing and heaps of entertainment out side the venue

That's a new one.

Nah, everyone hated Waverley when the AFL owned it. It was only after it was basically demolished that everyone remembered what a great place it was and how great footy was to watch there.

Rob, that would be a normal reaction to many things, in many peoples pasts, in a word ... nostalgia, rose coloured glasses etc.

Wait till Subi is a distant memory !!!!!.

i was commenting on Etihad, how so many people complain about it.

the old waverley was s**t! i grew up down the road from it. the 3 good things about it was the large carpark (we had a 4wd:D to get us out of the bog hole) and pizza hut use to be there & it was easy to sneak a 6 pack in with you. apart from that is was a freezing arctic s**t hole, with little cover from the winds and rain, the ground was so big you struggled to see the other side of the ground, the black and gold scoreboard:eek: & it was hawthorns home ground!

Parking is an issue for the stadium. Not sure why I didnt mind it. parked at the casino and just walked.

People are lazy and love to complain about anything that isn't handed to them on a silver platter. Etihad is fine, people are just whiny jerks.

All this talk reminds me of that open panel Interview in 1999 where Joyce Brown kept whinging about how Docklands isn't safe for women and made out it was the slums of Detroit. Now it's perhaps the most accessible stadium in Australia and people are still finding things to whinge about

THE AFL is guaranteeing club bank loans to the value of $42 million.
The league is grappling with revenue-sharing measures to ensure greater competitive balance, made more urgent with 10 of the 18 clubs coming off financial losses in 2013.

Six of those losses were greater than $1m and eight clubs face debts ranging from $2.4m to $10.4m.

The AFL — which chose not to comment on its role as financial backer to clubs — has guaranteed loans for several years, but some sides significantly increased the level of their borrowings at the end of last year and there has been an overall rise of $8.4m in borrowings now backed by the league.

  • Sports Facilities Management Ltd (Stadium Australia) - $5.0 million
  • Carlton football club - 5.5 million
  • Melbourne Football club - 5 million
  • North Melbourne - 4.6 million
  • St Kilda - 4.75 million
  • Richmond - 1.5 million
  • Footscray - 4.55 million
  • Brisbane - 8 million
  • AFL Victoria - 0.35 million
  • Essendon - 5 million
  • GWS - 0.66 million
  • Gold Coast - 0.98 million
  • AFL Queensland - 0.1 million
  • AFL NSW/ACT - 0.15 million

yeah ive had this discussion somewhere else on the same matter. this isnt anything new. League has been guaranteeing some loans since at least 2000.

According to the Fairfax press the club loans total $42.04m consisting of:
Lions $8m
Saints $6.75m
Melbourne $5.5m
Essendon $5m
Carlton $4.9m
Dogs $4.55m
North $4.2m
Tigers $1.5m
Gold Coast $0.99m
Giants $0.66

Up from $33.64m an increase of $8.4m
Essendon accounted for $5 of the $8.4
didn't the carlton debt get cleared up, one of the wealthy supporters or board members, donate a heap of money and a couple of poke venues to the blues?

Pratt donated a heap of money that went into facilities, Mathieson donated venues/machines licenses.
ok at least they will be in better shape financial then after the mess old jack Elliott left them in.
is that debt still left over from the legends stand that Elliott had built?

For the most part yes, theres some additional debt from acquiring new pokies licenses, but the Blues are casually paying off their debts to both the league (from the 2002 fines and other money) and Westpac, at a rate of about 750k- 1 million a year
