I tell you what. If United finish 2nd or 3rd as many people are predicting with Jones, Evans and Smalling as their only options at CB, then I will bow down and kiss Van Gaal on his big wobbly Harold Bishop chin. Would be an outstanding performance from a managerial perspective.

Fergie won the Premier League with a Man Utd side that wasn't all that different to the one Moyes inherited, a quality manager can go a long way to improving a side.

I think Man Utd will be decent this year, LvG is one of the all time great managers and he has a point to prove. He also has two exceptional striking talents in Rooney and Van Persie. They have added a bit of grunt into midfield and a fully expect another 2-3 signings to come in. There wings still look weak and their defence is inexperienced. However, Liverpool should have won the title if not for a final choke with a back 4 that was fairly average. Arguably it cost them in the end, but if you can score goals and defend up the pitch you can still place high on the ladder. Additionally Jones and Smalling and undoubtedly the introduction of another quality CB will see them up there firing again.

I think most of the top sides, Chelsea aside look fragile at the back. Man City will rely on the fitness of Kompany and a new signing. Spurs badly need to find a new partner for Vertongen. Arsenal are looking a title threat held back by some fragility in the back 4.

All in all....it should be a cracker of a season!

SM - not sure how hard this will be for you but given the interest would it be possible to get an update of how successfull everyone's predictions are shaping at the end of every game week? Obviously will be pretty meaningless early days but would be interesting to see how it evolves over the season.

Very easy to do! It's all formula-ised in Excel, so all I have to do is update the ladder position for each team when the round is over, and it updates the leader board.

Might just give a top ten for each week though, to keep some mystery in it, unless everyone would be super keen to know their position?

Wouldn't mind that! :D :thumbsu:

Absolutely, and I have no doubt United will improve. But, they're not the only side in the top 7/8 with a quality manager proven to be capable of creating teams greater than the sum of their parts. All of their rivals are led by excellent managers, so I don't think that alone will be enough to see them bridge the gap. I just don't think the 2 additions they've made over the summer will be enough to see them challenge at the top of the table at this stage.

They're still yet to adequately replace Ferdinand & Vidic (which should've been done a year or 2 ago to be honest), while Carrick & Van Persie at 33 and 31 respectively are unlikely to show improvement from now on. They've got Januzaj but aside from him do they have any other youngsters who look ready to step up and take the team up a level in lieu of a top quality new signing?

They'll be well in the mix for 4th but beyond that I have my doubts.

Imagine if the Tyne-Wear derby was on the last day of the season to decide who finished higher, would be epic!

Not that the fixture needs any more fuel added to the fire - that would be insane :D
