Player Watch 2024 AFL Draft Thread

Same rules as every other year.

This isn’t the thread to talk about your ladder predictions or declarations of how interested you are in the draft in response to a win/loss, nor is it the thread to declare who you want to trade for.
Those posts will be deleted.

Talk about the kids in the draft.

He's not for this draft, but oh me oh my Oli Greeves looks like a superstar. Might be up for an underage season on par with Harley.

Without looking at the stats, FOS and Smilie went well without being outstanding. Only caught the second half, but Smilies hands are exceptionally clean and his footskills are great given the pressure he's often under. Seemed oddly positioned at a few contests, but it seemed they were trying to get some others in prime spot. Moreas was outstanding, takes contact a lot better than last season and showed some good composure. He still needs to stop the pop-up handballs when he gets tackled, but he was brilliant around the ground. Jagga Smith got a lot of the footy, seems to really get under his kicks when under pressure. Seems to have filled out a bit over the break.

Will post the stats when they come through, interested to see how eastern developed such a commanding lead in the first half.
They kicked their first 8 goals straight.

That helps.

Thoughts on Boyd woodcock and Mutaz El Nour in the mid season draft?

Do we actually have a pick available in the MSD?

Woodcock has been around for a fair while. If he was considered good enough to step back up to AFL, he'd have been picked up already. He's one of those classic VFL guns who probably isn't big / quick enough to play at the next level consistently.

El Nour isn't in the same category, but again he was available last year and no one picked him up.

Moraes showed some signs of rust like many on the day and will be better for the run, but overall he played a solid game that helped to spur his Eastern team to victory. One of the more interesting developments was his impact when played in the forward line where he presented well on the lead and kicked a couple of goals.

A tough start to the season for the early pick 1 favourite. Finn suffered a thumb fracture in the first quarter, but battled on to have a positive impact for the Chargers. Even though he was understandably quieter than normal, he still showed some of the elite traits that have recruiters salivating.

An imposing first game from key forward prospect Jack Whitlock. On a breezy day that wasnt conducive to high marking or accurate kicking, Jack got better as the game went on, ending up with 4 goals and 20 disposals and was almost as impressive on the ground as in the air.

Theirs no way we trade away our first if their is a key forward or back at the top end, we need elite talls

After a slow start playing in the forward line, a move into the midfield in the second quarter sparked Jagga into life. He found a lot of the footy and drove his team forward, but tended to be a little wasteful by foot like many of his teammates on the day.

Thanks champ, doing God's work. Just on Whitlock, what's his height/size? Is he more a deep frwd or a mobile type?

Listed height of 200cm. Has some Ben/Max King traits... not the level of freakish athleticism that those two have, but a similar archetype and similar size. Long and lanky with wiry muscle rather than brute strength, moves really well for a big guy, strong high marking, good when the ball hits the deck. Gets around the ground pretty well, presents up to the wings.

The question that needs answering is the same as every key forward prospect at this level to my mind. Is he taking marks because he's just taller than all his opponents right now? Can he really compete at a high level when he's up against a like type?

I’d like us to target wingers in this years draft.

Also players that like the physical side of the game to bring back the unsociable hawks.

The traditional rivalry between the Dragons and Chargers resulted in a big win for Sandy, and Taj Hotton was instrumental in the victory with a BOG performance. He didn't stop working all game, was clean with the ball, strong overhead and topped it off by hitting the scoreboard.

Another solid performance from Smillie in a contest that his Eastern team dominated from start to finish. His normally accurate kicking was a little off, but he beasted the stoppages for the first three quarters. His stats dont look outstanding, but he ended up sitting out the 4th quarter for reasons unknown. Fingers crossed he wasnt injured.

Do the Ranges ever play games at their ground in Kilsyth?
