Split our first round pick this year:

  • One of them goes to WB for Smith
  • One of them goes to GEE for Holmes

2x outside class players (as we've officially acknowledged we need to address) for the price of one first round pick.

So much cash to spend, may as well use it to get players to the club.
Won’t be that easy Cats will hold out for more. Are you really prepared to give up picks 77 and 95???

Say we finish 3rd last and Hardwick decides to leave as a RFA do you reckon we’ll end up with pick 4 as compensation?
Nah, end of second round most likely unfortunately. He's worth far more as we all know it, but there's no way known that the AFL would give us a top ten pick as compensation. They seem to screw us at every opportunity they can and this is an easy one for them to do so again.

A bottom 5 finish would mean the dogs will ask for that and not leave it to chance by accepting our future first. But we can't be giving away a top 5-6 pick with so much talent available in this draft re-mids. It will set up our midfield stocks for 12-15 years which includes McKenzie, Ward, Newc and Day.

The irony is that I’m sure our first rounder this year would’ve been on offer 6 months ago in the form of our future first.

They didn’t want to deal and now Baz’s market value is less due to being out of contract and being out for the season with an ACL.

Thing is though, had Baz come last trade period, he wouldn't have been at the same session that he did his knee in and we would be benefitting from having him in our midfield, thus would be looking at a better finish. Given that, would Dogs be better off offloading him last year or this year?

Clearly last year. Bulldogs were banking on Smith capturing his form from 2020-22 which would warrant a top ten pick, now they have a player coming off an ACL and is two years removed from his last elite year. Not only should the Bulldogs get less in a trade for Smith, they still have his contract on the books when they have some of their best players out of contract at years end.

We only have 2 picks in this years draft. Our first - currently pick 2. Pies second - currently pick 24, but probably end ups at least pick 30.

If we're looking to split our first for picks to use this year then only Suns and Freo have multiple first round picks with 3 each. But they'll likely all end up mid-late first round.

AFL Draft Order 2024 - Zero Hanger

  • he’s out of contract
  • he’s just done an ACL
  • his output in 2023 was less than previous years

All factors conducive to his trade value which reflect he’s not worth a top 3… even top 6 pick.
Lucky then, that we'll only be getting pick 17 or 18.

None of our picks will be worth anything when the gold coast find a loop hole that casts an academy net over the entire country giving them all 75 picks in the draft. What an absolute load of garbage this drafting has become.

Would be an interesting move to say the least. For all the Sleepy Mark gags (apologies everyone) we've had over the years the club has shown that it's willing to try to be aggressive and pull the trigger on moves - Weddle deal being the obvious example that was completed. We tried to trade this year's first in order to draft O'Sullivan too.

Personally I'd rather we keep our first. I expect it's going to be a top four pick, and as it stands the top three in the draft look like great prospects. Plenty of time for others to announce themselves though so maybe by the end of the season splitting the pick would look like a great option.
