Rod Tucker in the hot spot pic...
very ghoulish

Great days cricket.

Awesome stuff by Ronchi. Couldn't be happier for him, terrific journey.

Not a bad debut test knock for Ronchi, a pity he just fell short of a debut ton but he has helped NZ to a competitive score at least.

Latham looks to have cemented his spot as an opener too with another good knock under pressure.

Another 50 runs would make things interesting when the poms go in.

Love the Rock, what a debut innings. Gave me plenty of entertainment when he was a Warrior and now he has the chance to share his unique skills on cricket's biggest stage. :D

Yep. It really is a sensational story.

To see where he is today after falling behind (at the age of 30!) Michael Johnson in the WA setup, then upping stumps in Australia neglecting the lucrative BBL contracts just when the league was really ramping up in favour of battling it out with Wellington in domestic cricket. Developed into a prolific batsman in the Plunkett Shield, made it into the national T20 and ODI sides and despite struggling early has flourished. Being involved in a World Cup final and now nearly making a ton on test debut is an awesome achievement and justifies the commitment he made in making the move.

In hindsight, how did he fall behind Michael Johnson? Didn't Johnson average about 8?

It was a strange move even at the time. Ronchi was dropped because like our entire batting lineup at that stage was frustratingly inconsistent in the Shield. But his glovework has always been of a very high standard - which is where Johnson excels, but as you point out he is very much a relic of the old days where it was a common sight for the keeper to bat at nine or ten. So essentially we dropped a good gloveman who on his day offered a high reward with the bat for another good keeper who offered nothing with the bat. I guess it wasn't the worst thing to try as we were attempting to shake off the tag of being schizophrenic performers, but yeah.

Interestingly (and highly surprisingly) Johnson actually got picked up in county cricket as late as 2013 and played a few games. Absolutely respect his glovework, but he's a good counterexample when the 'always pick the best keeper regardless' argument gets pulled out every now and again.
