List Mgmt. It's time for a rebuild

A rebuild is putting every option on the table, trading away your talent for kids, and building a new team from the ground up.

We've got some dead wood, and some players to move on. But a rebuild...not even close.

There is a good core of talented players to build on.

Lids, Cotch, Dusty, Jack, Rance, Chappy, Sheds, Maric...though he probably doesn't have much more to give
Vlas will get there

Griff is coming along nicely
Houli can play, and Grimes is a talented athlete that shows glimpses of brilliance

There is a good core of players to work with and talk of a rebuild is way off the mark.

I think this is what my sentiment is too.... just a deep cutting of deadwood.... Trade players in by all means but they have to be best 22 and young enough. Bit different to a rebuild.

I would do the same in our assistant coaches.... Keep the quality and boot the rest. Mind you if we turn 2-8, there won't be a coach either...

I see our biggest weakness for a premiership as genuine talent and depth of talent in the back line. Vlastuins move there is good and now we need to add talent and depth for whenever our backs go down.

Tall talent in particular, Grimes goes down all the time, hopefully Astbury matures, Chaplin is no spring chicken and of limited talent.
Batchelor is only so so but may come good with games.

I would love to see us find a distributor, a really good kick. Maybe Houli moves to a back pocket, but has he got the strength and the mongrel for a backman? I'd like to see Ellis play a few games there to develop as the distributor.

Rance is our shining light in the back line, if he goes we have a big black hole to fill, the obvious player would have been Darrou but we dropped him. Was it 2 or 3 years developing as a full back and then kapoof. Silly.

I am hoping in the second half of the year C Ellis, Conca and Hunt might be able to help a bit in terms of distribution from the back line

time for the club to see where our list really is, and thats middle of the pack time to make some tough decisions on some dead wood. And maybe offer up a decent player to further enhance our draft picks this year, after all we will get an extra first rd pick for rance going. Possibly offer up some quality who is running out of time Lids comes to mind wont be there when or if we are every ready to challenge for a flag!

So after cooling off, we have a few main issues.

Back line: Morris needs to stay back and tag their crumbers. Generally ok against key position guys. No real needs here.

Mids: lack contested beasts and speed. Need another beast mid with good disposal, and another quality mid who can win his own footy and has some speed.

Forwards: a third key tall. Not vickery. One who can be relied on to take marks and kick goals. And of course a crumber.

Three key talls doesn't work. Our biggest issue is the ball coming back out too easily after it goes in - that's how the Dogs and Dees scored all their goals. Preventing that is a small's job.
What we need is someone who is Lloyd when we've got the ball and Gordon when we don't. Each of those blokes is half a player.

Perhaps I should've used a different phrase other than key tall. We need a third target. Probably a mobile medium-tall sort of player.

But do agree with your point re not locking the ball in. I think we actually set up too close to the 50 because the ball keeps going over our head. But of course we need the pressure to be raised from our forwards to do that.

I think we all knew that when Dimma got to the club there would be cleanout(s). Not just one but 2 or 3 but gradually getting smaller as we got the players necessary to take us up the ladder....

Both are pretty ordinary I agree but Gordon has his size and time on his side, I see some upside. Lloyd less so, he's not quick, not a good kick at goal, small I don't get his selection at all. Both could be gone in 2 years too.

We are to small , the midfielders we have taken in recent drafts are to small . Drummond , Vlaustin , Ellis , Conca , maddona , Lloyd are all to small . Add this to our adding if the list with hunt , Miles , Arnott and there is far to many of the same type.
We have one bloke who is around the 190 mark who can run and he is extremely outside . As a result of our lack of midfield size , whenever we win the contested footy we go backwards and rely to heavily on run from behind the contest and setting up from defence . We do play a similar style to hawthorn issue is they have bigger blokes like hodge and even barge arsed Mitchell who allow them to go sidewards or through the contest so they are not as predictable . Shane Edwards is a gem because he is able to go through traffic and defy's what every other richmond player does at clearances and goes forward .
Push hard at us at contests and lock down on our half backs and you have us beat .
We miss Jackson and there isn't a replacement sitting in the wings or even developing .
Vlass isn't small at 187cm's.

Great idea..another rebuild. Richmond specialises in them these days. Frawley, Wallace and now Hardwick. Thats 15 years lost to get us nowhere.

Rebuilds only serve to buy a rubbish board of incompetents and freeloaders another 5 years.

Rebuild the board is what's needed. Benny Gale too.

I was just thinking a we seem to go from one rebuild to the next.

It is getting a little boring and deflating to be honest. Here we go again mentality.

I hope we do not do the rinse repeat again but because we are so conservative, we probably will, and we will watch people come and go again while we are watching from the sidelines:straining::rolleyes:.

Nah it can't be that bad. Seriously like something to freshen up the place though. I do not think Dimma has to be sacked in 2015 or deserves to be but some change needs to happen end of year a little bit different I think.

I think a few new faces need to come in and a few stalwarts moved on just to start a new beginning even if its the beginning of a new stage just as a change up and revitalisation of new hope from a different tact etc..

Going over old ground again and again is a killer...

Based on our performances if we were a corporation we would be bankrupt and our board would all be in jail. We are the Enron of the footy world.

I still say that our list peaked in 2012 even though we didn't make finals. We were touted to have one of the best midfields in the league, our list had so much upside, Cotchin was equal second in the brownlow and our biggest defeat was Carlton in Round 1 by only 44 points (with Collingwood being second at only 21 points). We were actually able to match up with the best and defeated what I thought was a full-strength Hawthorn by a whopping 62 points (their biggest loss) and Sydney by 29 points (their biggest loss). These were the two grand finalists of 2012. Many players have gone backwards every year from then on, which is concerning. We may not need a full rebuild, but we need to really look at who we have brought into the club since 2012 and the relationships of the players with the coaches now in comparison to that year.

Pretty stupid comments really , Gales role is to oversee the whole football club which has seen a massive improvement under his tenure .
I said at the time that Craig Cameron left the football department in a s**t fight and I will say again Francis Jackson is no good . We should have a mass amount of players who have had 4-5 years in a AFL club instead they at running around in district comps , smoking bongs or eating hamburgers at half time of a NTFL reserves game .

Yes his done a lot of good work like suck us in to purchase memberships and merchandise but what needs to be done is on field success that's what will improve everything else. Look at hawthorn pre Clarkson. Hardly getting people through the gate then quick success and then booming membership the rest happened much easier.

Rebuild? Yes of the coaching staff. None should remain.

Our list needs a top up. This draft has me concerned. We need to be aggressive in getting ready made talent in areas that we are struggling in.

Dylan Shiel as a beast on baller.

Chris Yarran as a small forward.

For starters. Will help us in two positions and types we need.

A midfield of Cotchin, Martin, Vlastuin and Shiel is dynamic, hard and skilled.

We need a small defender who can maintain oppositions small forwards.

Speaking of small forwards. Having the potential of Yarran in our forward line under the feet of Riewoldt and Griffiths would be immense.

Our backline needs class and skill into it. Deledio and Lennon added there. Need a small defender to replace Morris who should be traded Or delisted. A liability.

Tweak the list. No rebuild required. Only in the coaching department.

So you're saying that the CEO's priorities are not the footy department or onfield performance? So you saw my stupid comments and followed it up with this brilliant insight?

I rekon we are more like a City Council. With the councilers living large and enjoying all the perks (junkets to Brazil etc) without really having to perform or make tough decisions, knowing there will always be a guarenteed income stream (in this case memberships not property rates).
