In terms of a 15-man squad for England, I'd go with:

1. Alastair Cook (C)
2. Ian Bell (VC)
3. Gary Ballance
4. Kevin Pietersen
5. Joe Root
6. Moeen Ali
7. Jos Buttler (Wk)
8. Ben Stokes
9. Chris Jordan
10. Stuart Broad
11. James Anderson
-----
- James Taylor
- Adil Rashid
- David Willey
- Mark Wood

ODI's? Willey's not really a test prospect.

I like him for his all-round abilities, if either Stokes or Jordan need to be replaced. Can always put Tim Bresnan or Steven Finn in his place in the squad instead.

I think that's probably the right starting XI for them to begin The Ashes with though.

Outside his 170 against a bunch of Uni students, KP hasnt really hit a big score so far in county
Peter Siddle and Clint Mckay have scored more runs than KP in county thus far...

Yep. Michael Clarke was being pretty disingenuous when he weighed into the debate saying he was certainly making enough runs to return to the side. It's pretty understandable why he'd be keen to see Pietersen back in the side, as it throws up so many unknowns.

Bresnan's finished as a test bowler and Finn's well down in the ranks, more likely Plunkett would be called up who I think would be a better selection at this stage than Jordan.

Names in your best XI are about right, but has Pietersen really made it clear with his form for Surrey that he's worth all the excess that would come? I would argue no. Bell opening? I know you've done that just to slot Pietersen in, but shuffling him around would be a mistake IMO. It's a bit simplistic for me to say that they've struggled ever since dumping Compton, but I think there is a lot to be said for picking a specialist opening batsman rather than trying to get too clever. Lyth will get first crack against New Zealand and I guess how he takes to test cricket will dictate as to whether he goes to the Ashes.

He's since been able to bat against the mighty Clint McKay and the winless-in-2000-games Leicestershire and made some runs
I'll be honest and say that during the big bash I bought into the whole #BringBackKP thing like I think most did. Seems to have a good publicity team working for him thats for sure
However, I've gotten to the point now where I wouldnt be selecting him in tests, and its got nothing to do with the off-field stuff. Playing him above guys like Ballance, Bell or Root wouldnt actually improve middle order performance that greatly, and would hamper the development of younger guys in Root and Ballance.
England have a terrible side for sure, but the middle order is really the only bit that is functioning okay. I'd be looking at the one paced bowling attack, and opening partnership before i'd look at bringing KP back

Mate, it's an Ashes series. It's not about development.

Do you honestly think KP isn't best XI? Do England really have the luxury of leaving him out?

He's just made an unbeaten 300 when no one else in his team made 50, so I'd suggest he still knows how to bat.

scores 300 and is told he wont be considered for selection by Strauss.
Brilliant start to your new job Strauss !!. You;re the new Downton .

So what's the message from this to young English players? It doesn't matter how many runs you make, what's more important is if Andrew Strauss likes you?

I'd suggest that we know why Vaughan and Stewart withdrew from the job.

I wonder how things will change if the Kiwis knock them up

As has been pointed out, why would you take a job as coach of England when you don't have a say in whether some players can be selected?

Ian Chappell said he could always rely on the England selectors to gift him at least one test match each series.

Strauss was one of the ring leaders in the problems... so they sack the previous guy... to bring in Strauss. bit puzzling really.

Nah. Strauss is a new position.

Graves hasn't taken over the ECB yet. Looks like Strauss was a last minute appointment to maintain the home counties control over the ECB and keep out undesirables like KP.

We need more Captains like Cook who has the family you'd want the English captain to have

I don't think it's simply a case of Strauss not liking KP.

I think there is an establishment clique – led by Flower and embodied by Cook – that decided it was a good idea to sack KP after the Ashes and now cannot countenance going back on that. Strauss is merely implementing that policy. After the Ashes, they went all in on Cook, and it was clear that he was simply to weak a leader to deal with KP in the side. So they got rid of him, hoping the side would improve and no one would miss KP anyway. That hasn't happened.

It looks like it sacking KP was part of the role- which is why Stewart and Vaughan withdrew.

Strauss is there is the home counties man to prevent Graves' faction from having too much control over the team

LOL, what a joke! can't see any reasonable coach i.e. dizzy/moody wanting to coach an england side especially when you have been told that a certain player won't even be considered irrespective of his form.

It's the ashes you need to play your best team irrespective of development etc. KP is in the best england XI

I hope they bring back duncan fletcher and dizzy coaches india :D trollolol

Imagine if NZ demolish England while KP is pilling on the runs...that would be a massive media s**t storm. CANNOT WAIT for this years ashes!!!

Even more so if England are 2-0 down in the Ashes, and looking down the barrel of a 5-0 whitewash at home, and KP makes another 300+ for Surrey...yet the ECB would still not recall Pietersen.
