Whoever wins the Premier C preliminary final between Hampton Rovers & Old Geelong will have a huge mountain to climb if they want to be premiers against Monash on Friday Septmber 23, for 3 reasons:

1) Preliminary finals in any comp is the most mentally and physically draining game of the season compared to the grand final. Because the two competing teams that are in the the preliminary final put so much time and energy trying to get the last ticket into that 'One Day in September', the side that makes it to grand final day have virtually no petrol left in the tank and are ripe for the picking by the team that has won the 2nd semi final and has had the week's rest. How many times have we seen teams who have won hard fought preliminary finals only to be smashed in the grand final by a 10-15 goal margin against the team that has had a much better preparation with the week's rest with their win in the 2nd semi?

2) A 6 day break for the team that wins the preliminary final. Good luck trying to stay injury free and hopefully no reports.

3) Less than ideal weather forecast for Saturday, with the BOM predicting heavy showers in the afternoon. It will be a gruelling slog, especially if the ground is heavily cut up at Trevor Barker Oval with the earlier reserves preliminary final.

I think all C Grade reserve grade coaches hope OG win the seniors in Saturday. Their two’s are on another level.

That's why clubs hope to gain an easy Preliminary Final win and coast through the final quarter and rest key players in the last 20 mins in order to gain back a bit of the other Grand Finalist's edge.

Not unless the game goes right down to the wire, with the result not decided until the closing stages. Then, there's the added problem of trying to get through a 6 day break, with the grand final on next Friday. If the conditions on Saturday are as bad as predicted by the weather forecast, and if the game is a gruelling slog with both sides dog tired by the end of the day (regardless of the result), put your money on Monash to win the flag. If TAB Sportsbet was framing a market on the preliminary final and the Premier C premiership winner overall, what would the odds look like?

Latest weather forecast for Saturday according to the BOM-95% chance of showers, 4-8mm of rainfall expected in the afternoon, with a temperature of 15 deg. Trevor Barker Oval will be heavily cut up by the time the main game starts at 2:15pm, due to the Premier C Reserves Preliminary Final between Mazenod & Old Ivanhoe on earlier that day starting at 11:40am. Even though Monash Blues aren't playing on Saturday (due to the week's rest with their win over the Rovers in the 2nd semi at Frearson Oval last week) it's advantage Monash, because whoever wins the preliminary final-either Hampton Rovers or Old Geelong-will find it hard to recover from the gruelling slog and will have a face a massive hurdle to get over with a 6 day break, with the grand final on AFL Grand Final Eve (Friday).
