Autopsy Round 24, 2023 : Hawks slow to a crawl

Fremantle are just as young and travel interstate every second week.

How do you explain their performance? They didn’t appear the least bit “exhausted”.
Not all teams are up and/or down at the same time. They were down a few weeks ago when we were beating Pies and Dogs.

Ryan. 1 touch for the day. Selection error.
Same with not playing MacKenzie as sub.
We literally have no fwd line without Lewis.
+13 in clearances and got smashed. Shows how bad our fwd line is.

Really disappointing way to finish the year, but they were far too good. Shows that we can't cover the loss of key players.

We move on to the trade and draft period.

We almost need to tip out our entire fwd line. It's a massive concern.

Delivery into the forward line was putrid. Got destroyed in the middle and down back.

I am not convinced Freo is as young as us! An beside they have a full list full of early talent unlike us!

Newcombe and Ryan was clearly not right. An we’re missing some of our best players.

When Lewis missed early in the year we lost most, if not all of the games from memory. We need more goal kickers.

Forget Watson we need key position players. Stood out like a sore thumb today without Lewis and Ryan clearly not all with it physically we were completely rudderless. It's frustrating that Lewis can't get himself right consistently week to week because it's costing us games. Bloke is 25 and hasn't played a full season. Sick of the put him in cotton wool talk too. Bloke unfortunately is made of cardboard. Youth wasn't an excuse today they were pretty young themselves. Don't look to anything other than talls in the draft. Sick of being uncompetitive in the air.
Agreed.

Delist?

Very disappointing display to finish the year. Today was step backwards from what we were producing for most of the latter half of the year.

Midfield was thoroughly outplayed and forward line had few winners. Freo did our game plan better than we did. Other than Serong, Brayshaw and Jackson they don’t have much high end talent so not sure why we match up so badly with them.

We desperately need another key position defender and forward and some more classy ball users. Amon is inconsistent, as are Impey, Scrim and CJ. Morrison is solid but not damaging enough. Ward is great when he gets it and will become a very good or elite player but needs another 20-30 games. Same with CMac.

I think the Finn experiment should be scrapped. Yes, he can play a shut down role but you can’t have him getting minimal touches as a mid.

Pretty meh game. Went with high hopes of a big energy finish to the year but just never got out of first gear. Second to the ball all day but thought we honestly just got some cooked bounces here and there, balls off packs directly to the one Freo player multiple times when we had an outnumber.

Umpiring was pretty ordinary it felt, just needed literally one freebie in the first half and didn’t get it. There was a play in the 3rd where there was a missed free our way, then Freo got 2 immediately after each other which resulted in a score.. was pretty deflated after that.

BUT all said and done we aren’t as s**t as the bummers so just remember that.

2-3 wins more than I expected this year, a few nice patches of form throughout the year that was really watchable. Ultimately looking back all the way to pre season when we had that awful game against the cats, you could definitely say we have progressed. Onto next year

Young is a class player! Johnson, Erasmus, Henry, Clark, Stuart and Aish all top end talent in their draft years.

Yeah it's frustrating. Watching Larkey have a huge season for such a poor side rubs some salt into the wounds for all the North v Hawks shitfighting too. If only Lewis could stay fit.

This game was s**t make no bones about it.

The season has been good. It's hard to be excited at the prospect of finishing third last but * me if we aren't the best third last team of all time.

So much growth in such a short time. Onwards and upwards.

Got roasted early in the game thread for saying Freo would win because they enjoy the MCG and us having a key fwd duo of Kosi and a 3 gamer.

Sorry but that was a no brainer. Could of had Hodge Mitchell and Lewis as our starting mids and it wouldn’t make a difference with that fwd line.

Love Lewis but gee, never playing more than 15 games a year is killing the Hawks over the last few seasons. Only beat North this year when Lewis wasn’t playing.

In terms of the draft, think we have gone very vanilla in the last 2 years I’m afraid. Ward is a solid citizen at best and CMk is frighteningly similar.
Need some more X factor big time.

As disappointing as todays efforts and results were I wouldn't worry too much about it. We were't anywhere close to where we needed to be from a structure point of view both at the front and at the back. If anything, it just showed once more how desperate we are to get that FF and FB positions filled in the off season. Today will be no indication on how this team is going to perform going forward.

Have you watched North regularly ? Pretty much all of there play goes to him.
Because they aren't dangerous as a side at the minute teams in general play very loose on their forwards .
So he gets quite a few opportunities despite them being a poor side .

He is a very good player , rubbing salt into our wounds is an incredible over the top and dramatic statement

We need Butler to come on in 2024.

Hopefully the improvement next year comes from the likes of Grainger-Barras, Ward, Serong, Stephens, Butler, Mitchell and co. Players who are in their 3rd-4th year are the ones that need to show signs of improvement.

Well, as a positive, at least we won't have to sit through the off season reading complaints on this board about meaningless wins ruining our draft position.
Rubbish

We had a free hit to win today and not effect draft position

What just a putrid effort evident from the first minute despite the first 2 goals
