The Big Four is a reminder of a time, long, long ago when Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond and Essendon were the strongest football clubs in the land.
Like 400 years ago when England, France, Spain and Holland were the most powerful countries in the word.
It sure is hard to imagine now - especially Carlton and Spain.

Pantera weren't a thrash band, thus they are excluded from this conversation, unfortunately.
Thread still needs more Pantera.

B: Anthrax - Dark Angel - Testament
HB: Coroner - Destruction - Celtic Frost
C: Sepultura - Kreator - Possessed
HF: Bathory - Megadeth - Overkill
F: Onslaught - Venom - Sodom

R: Metallica - Exodus - Slayer

I: Metal Church - Voivod - Vio-lence
Sub: S.O.D.

Em: Morbid Saint - Sabbat - Sadus

I couldn't fit Pantera in - omitted due to team balance.

Real big 4

Collingwood; West Coast; Hawthorn; Sydney

These clubs are currently the most successful and/or cashed up, but that is where their shared 'big' qualities end.

Traditional 'big 4' clubs have a long and rich social and cultural connection with each other through decades of Grand Final battles + having people in your life supporting one of those teams.

This rich social interaction forms a massive part of our shared experience in a passionate AFL state. Here, when you go to school, your consumption of AFL is strongly mediated by your friends (and family) and most often concern Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond, and Essendon. Almost everyone has an uncle, grandpa, friend, etc who supports a big 4 club. And they let you know about it!

Modern attempts at replacing the 'big 4' miss the point. It would be like Victorians trying to call their matches "Derbies" or "Showdowns" just because Perth/SA have them. Some things are uniquely part of your own state's football fabric... Some people might have a grandparent who supports Hawthorn, or a best friend who supports North - everyone's experience is slightly different. But the 'Big 4' came about because those 4 clubs seem to have a presence everywhere, regardless of ladder position or financial position.

This is one of the most misunderstood concepts on Big Footy.

Collingwood, Geelong, West Coast and Fremantle: four sides that don't need interstate deals/ the AFL to prop them up when going through rough patches (or even good patches), but who also don't partake in illegalities.

Except these clubs didn't always have the most followers in Victoria (namely Melbourne FC in the 1950s to 1960s)

The Big 4 was a concept of the late 1960s to 1980s to describe the most financial clubs of the day that dominated the 1970s version of free agency.

Its the equivalent of the Pies, Eagles and Hawks today. It was nothing more.

With Thrash, speed had everything to with it. I was all about speed, speed was the name of the game. Thrash bands were mostly small and slender, like Anthrax. Now Pantera, I have never been quite sure what they were, but they were too muscular to be a thrash band, too hairy to be stoner metal as well. They were smooth, not that they couldn't be either thrash or stoner at different times, I'm sure there was a lot of switching back and forth, but I think more often, Pantera were classified as groove metal except for the early period when they were a glam band.
If your club was a thrash/speed/doom metal band who would it be ?

I love the Big 4

The very existence of it has resulted in the capitulation of all 4 of these clubs

Collingwood & Richmond sent each other broke in 80s. Richmond has never recovered

The Bombers and Blues have spent 30 years, some would say "cheating", in attempts to better the other

All 4 clubs put too much focus in beating each other rather than trying to keep up with the real powers in the competition

May the Big 4 continue for another 30 years

Footnote: Since 1983 the Big One has won 8 flags while the Big 4 have won 8 flags between them
