Im not sure he really knows a lot about Geelong but it will grow on him im sure.I hope we put extra effort into his education , not just his football skills. One of the first thing they should be showing him is the new Jim Stynes statue and perhaps introducing him to as many of the Irish AFL guys as possible. And Irish people up in Melb? What there is nobody else Irish in Geelong. Really?
But he look quite good by foot Id have thought. The key will be his marking over head. There were some obvious comparisons with Blitz but some differences as well. Blitz was a run hardened fit athlete , Irish not so much. He looks a bit soft in the face. But kicking and mobility looks good , when we are talking about a 204 guy.

The test for him will he be come summer, and can he he put the work in to get really fit and strong. Great role model for him in Blitz , great club with an opening if he works hard , but Im always a little sus on the go home factor when it gets tough. 2 years playing VFL is not what they all imagine it will be like.

There goes the fashion parade and cover of 'What's on in Geelong.'

Thinking on it ...does this indicate Geelong are proactive or perhaps a little starved of options? Nothing else on and we grab a kid on TV? Like what we see and jump before anyone else?

I would like to think the kid had to audition for TV to start with?
So there's a bit of culling.
He didn't go out first pop (why does this remind me of The Bachelor?)
Survived a little more culling.
They won't squeeze a lemon, not that desperate.
So a bit of faith.
Let's live in hope, he might make a mean Irish stew.

I guess I just wonder how good we are at talent identification. Blitz was a referral from Guthrie's dad. This kid on a TV program.

Trust me, there are more keepers at the gate than at Christmas Island.
Only special refugees survive a barrage of tests for the golden ticket.

We can't be across everyone at club level.

People were brought to our attention; we've acted on it.

Shows we're not too proud or stubborn to consider those outside our radar.

Great post. Like the idea that even after Wells' successes he is, as you put it, not to proud to investigate and pursue other channels that re perhaps not so mainstream.

I'd add Rooke to your list of great examples.

Go Catters

What is Luke Lowden like?
Does he have much improvement (if any at all) in his game?

He does have some improvement left in him. I think he was about 70kgs when we drafted him in 2008, he would be about 102kg right now. He's kicked 22 goals from 17 games in the VFL including 4 last week. He's out of contract at the end of the year and likely to be at another club next year. He would do well as that forward/second ruck if given the opportunity. He did kick three goals on debut against West Coast this year.

Thanks for that.
The problem is that we only need a pure ruckman, not a tall forward.
We already have that covered with Vardy, Walker, Menzel, Kersten and, at a pinch, Mitch Burgundy.

Better on the flute than the ruck I think Fred. I guess from this list you mean forward options?

Im not sure about Lowden either , at least he would be a mature body , right height etc. which is a reasonable way to go if Simpson and Hmac will be our main guys next year ( at least to start with). If we have reason to believe they will not be fit or ready , we probably need to look at other alternatives that are more ruck first then forward. Who? I dont really have an answer , just that this shows why I like having an extra ruck of our own ,always developing. Rather lose one every few years than be devoid of options. (stupid as it sounds it probably does trend like we should consider a player like Blake).
I can't believe that that there are not options out there at 22-25 who could play the role for us if we get stuck , and then next year if we are still unhappy look at FA . How did Darcy Fort go at Weribbee this year?

Anyway back on Padraig. Id be very interested in his data like Beep and leap ...does anyone have of this? I know they did some of this on the TV show.

Yes, I was just saying that our forward options are covered, injuries always excepted, and that what we need is another specialist ruckman rather than a forward/ruckman. Lowden I know nothing about, but 1 game in 6 years is less than inspiring.

He was also the highest rated international prospect from the testing and that's what got him on the show.
I'd say (or like to think) that we had some eye on him somewhere.

He's not a true forward, he splits his time between forward and in the ruck.

If Geelong are indeed looking for another mature/ready made ruckman from another club then someone like Zac Clarke would be a good fit.

He has a steely resolve this bloke, something that caught be taught. He's determined and that's a start. I'm looking forward to seeing how he develops, and if his attitude is any indication, he's on the right track.

The Irish perspective...

"In the past, players went out, knew no-one and came home twice as quick. But I think I'm different. And I have my family fully behind me. I'm champing at the bit . . . I knew from the first second I went there that they were the right club."

Nice article , a good blend of rather robust commentary (interesting style in Ireland) , some stuff close to be accurate and other typically incorrect.

Gives one a better idea on his personal determination.

He may never make it in the AFL, but at least he has the will. My mate who was also on the recruit thinks he has what it takes to succeed. He has nothing but praise for the Irishman.
