although unlikely its not all over just yet.

if st.kilda lose there next 2 to freo(in perth) and adelaide (at the dome) which is a posiblity. and we win our next 2 against adelaide and the bulldogs who aren't travelling that well at the moment. we could still make it.

also if brisbane only win 1 more game(bulldogs, carlton, sydney) and carlton only win 1 game(north, bris, haw) and richmond only win 2(haw,freo,melb) i know it is a long shot but who knows what could happen.
it could come down to the round 22 match between us and them. also if collingwood lose there last 3 aswell they have port(in adel) syd(at dome),freo(in perth).

SK are a big chance to lose their last 3. IMO they are probably the second worst team in the comp behind Melbourne at the moment.

Aside from their 4 or 5 good players, there is just nothing there.

As far fetched as it may sound, it is very realistic that it will pan out this way.

Problem is Essendon wont win the last 3 games to take advantage of the situation.

Lots of if buts and maybes. Yes we can still make it if all the cards fall the right way but at the end of the day they will be kicking themselves for the poor first have performances against the Eagles and Richmond.

Although there is a slim chance of making finals, i think we should consider playing young guys (ahead of winning at all costs) like Hooker and give the older bloke J. Johnson a farewell game. Guys like Hooker, Magin and Dempsy etc. could all well be key players in the future and I think the team would benefit most by ruling out finals and looking to the future.
I also think giving J. Johnson a farewell game is essential, as the guy has been one of the better players at the club over the last decade.

Don't forget you have to factor in Richmond and Carlton who are both positioned better than us to replace St Kilda or Collingwood.

My view is that a team should always be picked to win as a priority. Regardless of whether or not EFC can make the finals, we should still try to win at all costs. My belief is that with this type of approach, all other good things will fall into place, including the development of younger, inexperienced players. However I respect everyone's right to an opinion on this one.

I'd rather not, we will get belted if we make the 8 this season. I'd rather get Hurley thanks.

You change your tune a lot dont you.
What happened to your line about if we dont get Rich we must get midfielders anyway ?

I just had a go at the ladder predictor and saw this happening:
6. Collingwood 48
7. Adelaide 48
8. Saint Kilda 44
.......................
9. Richmond (:D) 42
10. Brisbane 40
11. Essendon 40
12. Carlton 36

Best case scenario i have us winning two of our last three, but i wouldn't be surprised if we only managed one more win.

unfort the writing was on the wall during the demons game, if they had been able to partly restrict lloyd we would have gone under, there were a lot of poor efforts that day

i know its hindsight & all that, but i had a bad feeling all week abt the westcoast game & we played accordingly

so my forecast -

adelaide will do us for the 1st time in melb
doggies to fall over the line by 40pts
saints a toss up, dont rate the aints at all

wish it were otherwise but we peaked a couple weeks ago & are now in decline

UNLESS reimers is the new barometer for the dons, if he gets back this week & we win, ignore most of the above;)

I think the finals dream is well and truly over. It's a possibility we won't win another game for the year.

The last two games reflect performances of a team that's tired and ready for the end of the year. Let's get the boys that need it in for surgery now and take the time to give guys like Williams and Hooker their chance at senior level whilst persisting with blokes like Rhys Magin.

Time to look to '09 and not worry too much about what happens over the next few weeks. Let's see what the untried can produce and find out exactly where they're at.

Maybe we should try and get up for one more game this week for Lloydy, Ryder and Gus and then pack it in. :thumbsu:

I don't think 'pack it in' is quite fitting.

Personally, I think we look as though we're out of gas. I'm not sure we're up to playing well for the proportion of a match that's necessary to win. I don't question the players' effort, that's something that will definitely remain.

Getting up for those boys this week might be a lift that gets us over the line. I'm certainly not against the idea of winning.

Player fitness is paramount though, and taking risks or playing guys underdone shouldn't be an option over the next 3 weeks.
