I play five-a-side on Monday nights. We've one bloke, vain and pompous as you like, Liverpool fan naturally. Anyway last night he scored a goal with a back-heel and barked out "Yeah what a screamer... Torres!!!"

Few minutes later he's put through clear on an open goal, but instead of sidefooting to tap it in he winds up for a big one and misses the ball completely.

I couldn't resist it.

It's actually quite possible.

What are they? 7th? At the JJB. With our diabolical form? Just watch Tit**** Bramble score from a set piece and exploit the terrible zonal marking system again.

Not having Palacios now helps though.
 
It does, hopefully by then, we've also sold Robbie Keane.

If we need another striker, why don't we try and sign Saviola on loan for 6 months? What's the worst that could happen (although he'd be on pretty big wages at Madrid). I don't imagine Pompey would be paying 100% of his wages.

We could at least make an inquiry
 
Our next opponents Wigan have been very active during the transfer window:

IN: Mido (loan-Middlesboro), Rodallega (Nexaca - that's a Mexican club),
Watson (Crystal Palace midfielder)

OUT: Palacios (Spurs), Heskey (A.Villa)

It could be to our adavantage that Wigan will be unsettled for a few games while they adjust to the changes.

Not having to worry about Palacios is a relief, he's a good player. I wouldn't normally rate Mido, but the bastard scored against us at Anfield for Boro.

I just hope we getting a decent pitch, rather than the usual JJB quagmire.

By the way, I think we need to call in the fumigators. This thread has shown recent signs of an infestation of manchesteritis. Horrible little insects.

The Rodallega transfer isn't completed yet, Wigan are waiting for an international clearance (which should be a formality), but at this stage I don't think he can play against us.

They didn't play with Heskey at Anfield earlier in the season, when Zaki played so well, we'll need to watch him.

I think we'll win away from home, but the pitch could stuff around our nice neat passing and we could revert to playing 'hey Nando, head this!'
 
We need pace out wide, it's the same old story since McMoneyman left. We have some of the best central midfielders in the world, but you need good wide men to compliment their passing. Riera's fine at the left but there's no pace there to stretch others. He needs a partner on the right who's genuinely quick

As much as Rafa loves Kuyt, apart from one good patch this season, I don't see the point anymore. He just provides very little to our attacking play atm.

Teams park the bus against us knowing we cannot get in behind defences. It's getting sad, the team's too slow and too obvious in their attacking play. Torres is the only one who can get in behind defences, it's not enough

Who is available on the right hand side, that has pace and skill and will contribute to a team vying for 3 trophies, for approx. 1m (which is the loan fee we received from Pompey for Pennant).
 
Forgive me for adding to the pessimism in this thread, but I have just noticed Villa are now level on points with us, albeit having played one game more. If we don't pull our finger out against Wigan, we will be under siege from them, Chelsea and Arsenal for second spot. I'm not declaring the title challenge over yet, but I will on Monday unless we collect at least four points from these two games - preferably six.

Yep, while ourselves and Chelsea have been regularly screwing up, Villa and Aresenal have quietly but steadily closed the gap with scrappy wins.

I've noticed that all those early season criticisms of Liverpool having 'no width' have started to return since Duck Kite's form slumped. He really needs to miss a game.

Babel doesn't seem interested anymore, so I guess that leaves Bennynoon as the next choice at RW. He's done OK in that role a few times this season.

In what would be one of the most remarkable transfers in recent history, Harry Redknapp would be prepared to let one of his two young English players leave in return for bringing Keane back to Spurs

Rafael Benitez is weighing up an offer from Tottenham Hotspur of Aaron Lennon or Jermaine Jenas plus cash in exchange for his disaffected striker Robbie Keane. In what would be one of the most remarkable transfers in recent history, Harry Redknapp would be prepared to let one of his two young English players leave in return for bringing Keane back to Spurs.

There are still many variables at play, the most important being whether Keane, 28, wants to move back to the club that he left for a deal worth around £20.3m in the summer. The deal would mean that Liverpool would not have to pay the remaining balance, estimated at £11m, due for Keane in the original transfer. The two clubs first raised the possibility on Monday night.

Keane is in the Liverpool squad for tonight's Premier League game against Wigan Athletic, although Benitez was evasive yesterday when asked whether he believed the Irishman had a future at Anfield. Keane is known to want to stay and fight for his place at the club but increasingly it would appear that Benitez is prepared to use him as a bargaining chip to bolster his squad as the title race warms up.

Redknapp has met with the Lyons striker Fred – short for Frederico Chaves Guedes – but the Brazilian, who is out of contract in the summer, is still only a secondary target after Keane. The 25-year-old has a decent goalscoring record but Keane would be Redknapp's first choice. The deal for Keane would be complicated even if the two clubs can agree on terms. It would rely upon Keane and either Lennon or Jenas being prepared to make the move.

Should Keane have wanted clarification on his future from Benitez, he will have been interested to know that the Liverpool manager was given five opportunities to dismiss any doubt over the striker's future yesterday but opted to leave the issue open-ended.

"Clearly he is our player and in the squad for tomorrow, and that's it," was all Benitez would say. When asked whether he wanted to sell him in this transfer window, Benitez said: "I want to see him scoring goals. I don't need to sell any players. We are in the title race, I want to keep all the players. We don't need to sell anyone."

That contrasted with Benitez's response when Manchester City's new owners' former figurehead, Sulaiman Al-Fahim, listed Fernando Torres among those players Sheikh Mansour al-Nahyan coveted, back in September. Benitez said yesterday: "We have had four or five approaches from different teams for players and the answer's been the same for them all – no. We want all our players. We don't want to sell. Robbie could be one of the ones we had an approach about, I won't say."

Lennon and Jenas had both been acquired by Tottenham on the basis that they fitted the club's former policy of buying young English talent. Lennon was bought from Leeds United by Frank Arnesen when he was the club's director of football for the budget price of £1m. The winger has interested Benitez before and he would be an appealing alternative to Dirk Kuyt and Yossi Benayoun on the right wing. Jenas is currently injured.

Keane was stunned to be told that David Ngog, the young French striker who is yet to start a league game, would replace him in the squad for Sunday's FA Cup derby with Everton. But Benitez insisted that he did not see fit to explain his thinking to Keane, one-to-one, at Liverpool's Melwood training ground. "I talk to all the players," Benitez said. "When you sign a player, the price doesn't matter. The main thing is just that they work hard like the rest. It was clear we had Ryan Babel, Dirk Kuyt, Fernando Torres, Gerrard playing as a second striker and also David Ngog, so we had lots of options if we needed to change.

"He [Keane] knows he can play better. Everyone knows he's better than the one we are watching on the pitch sometimes," the Liverpool manager said. "When you sign them you have to give them time. Some take longer than others. Some just need a month, others a year."

Just my opinion, but i would take Lennon plus the extra 10 million, and buy Owen on the cheap and we would have money left over. Sounds Football Managerish i know, but ur getting a RW which everybody knows we need and a goalscorer to replace Keane.

We'd be getting a player who can only run fast.

He does nothing else, we'd also be buying back a player who left us to win trophies and doesn't care about anything except getting the pay packet in his pocket each month.

A most baffling piece of business if I've ever heard one.

I would run away as fast as possible from that deal.

Lets just sell him to Man Citeh for 31m and buy a real RW. One who can cross, one who has pace, one who can beat a defender, one who can finish (Lennon only ticks one of those boxes).

And like I said about Owen, why would we buy him back? Why not go for some young talent, maybe a Sturridge type player, strong, quick, bags of potential and who could potentially play up top on his own like Nando does,

If you guys had actually watched Lennon this season he's been very, very good for Tottenham.

Would easily be an upgrade on Kuyt/Benayoun/whoever you put on the right.

The bolded words do not belong in a sentence together.

Unless it's referring to Aaron Lennon playing on the right hand side and he was terrible, he contributed to the opposition being very, very good.
