Did a search and couldn't find any threads on this board proclaiming the greatness of Explosions in the Sky which is an absolute disgrace.

Thankfully I'm stepping into the breach :p

One of the most amazing bands I've ever come across. The beauty and power of their music truly is breathtaking. I generally like my music to be pretty hard, fast and aggressive (hardcore kid) but Explosions packs such an emotional punch that really sweeps me off my feet no matter how many times I listen to them.

Of course words can't really capture just how serenely captivating this band is:

and

discuss etc...

also don't mind God is an Astronaut.

What other good post-rock bands should I check out?

agree, explosions ftw.

those who tell the truth shall die... is one of my favourite albums and their best by a long long way.

also one of the best live bands i've seen.

i honestly dig all their stuff but if i had to pick one record it'd probably be Those Who Tell the Truth....

though having said that, my favourite Explosions song is Glittering Blackness which is off How Strange, Innocence

The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place is their best by a long, long way :P

lies!

i'd say my favourite song is the last track off those who tell the truth 'with tired etc', the ending perfectly rounds off the album.

the only problem with post rock music is its hard to write about, considering the length of the band's name/songs/albums

Nice idea for a thread and I will look back periodically to see if anyone has any suggestions for something new to explore.

I have been listening to a couple of what are described as Post Rock artistes over the last few weeks and have been impressed.

Just a couple for starters.

Clogs. Post rock is an odd term for them as I think that they are almost Classical in presentation but some call them Post rock. Stick Music I only got today and have had only one play so will not comment yet but I based purchasing the record on the other album I have called Lantern I think it is a very good album.

Balmorhea. The self titled I found via a torrent and was that impressed I got last years River Arms and that is good as well. They have just released a new album that has received some rave reviews and is called All Is Wild, All Is Silent. I am not sure that I am enjoying it as much as the 2 previous releases, though I have only been playing it over the last 4 or 5 days. The early albums are a touch sparser and All Is Wild, All Is Silent has a much fuller sound and maybe that detracts a touch for me. But with all this style of music it tends to grow with each outing.

Probably forgetting a few, but those are some of the more well-known acts from this genre. Hundreds of other smaller, lesser known bands though (Some quality, some crap and unashamedly derivative), as well as the numerous offshoots into various other sub-genres etc. When you have sub-genres of sub-genres of sub-genres, it gets messy...

John, not sure if you already know it, but looking at those choices, you might like this blog. A word of warning though, the blog author has a tendency to go a little OTT with some of his write-ups... :D

Thank you sir. That looks right up my alley and has been bookmarked along with many other blogs I look at daily. Blog world is the greatest thing to ever happen to my music reading. After a quick squizz I see that B/noise has L'Homme Puma. I have just acquired that today and am looking forward to a listen when I get time.

Have you seen this one? Not just post rock but a lot of other genres. Wish they would update more often though.

Without doubt one of the most amazing bands I have ever come across are Explosions In The Sky. I came across them when they did the soundtrack to the movie Friday Night Lights.

If I had to choose I think The Earth Is Not A Cold Dark Place would be my favorite.

I hadn't got around to listening to Explosions in the Sky, but those songs in the OP were great. Will definitely be seeking more.

you really need to check out this is your captain speaking. i saw them at the corner earlier this year and they were incredible

They are quite simply the best exponents of instumental 'atmospheric' music in Australia!!!

They have been around for a few years and have 2 LPs available and I highly recommend you get your ass' down to either missing link or polyester records to get a copy.

The first LP is called 'storyboard & the 2nd is called 'the eternal return'

The lads are melbourne based and are playing the East Brunswick club this Friday night. If you are a serious fan of this style of music I would strongly suggest that you make your way down and experience this band!!

Another album I found is by a band called Day For Airstrikes. Called Widows,
the opening track is 18 minutes long and goes by the fantastic name of "It’s Your Funeral And It’s Fantastic" They are standard instrumental post rock but I have been enjoying the album none the less.

Sure why not.I would have but i'm not a DCD animal...just casual listener

Haa haa. I was joking around. Not sure they fit the theme. More ethnic fusion. I still give them a play as my last.fm account shows. No doubt you have noticed.

A brilliant music and image match from one of the best films ever.

Apparently Lisa Gerrard is involved in the follow up film, being put together right now.

They haven't released much for a few years now, you'll do well to find a better exponent of the genre than these guys.

Yeah? That is great news.

As to Lisa Gerrard I am willing to boast, in a friendly manner of course:), that I had front row tix to her one and only ever Brisbane concert about 2 years back and would now crawl over broken glass to see her again. She is a sublime vocalist and backed that opinion with a sublime live performance. DCD were IMO the most under appreciated of bands by their home audience.

Post-Rock is absolutely awesome if you don't feel like intense metal album listening, or just want some background music while you are occupied with homework, gaming or other diligent matters.

Im thinking it may be decent to sleep to as well, but I haven't tried this yet.
