So who still wants to delist/trade Stanton?

watch the game for once in your life.... Stanton was done he was tired as hell and could not run anymore. You try running with no energy at all.

I probably agree that Stanton is over rated by some, but he is still very much a required player. I stand by my view that he will be an even better player in a better team, which we will be over the next 5-6 years.

Wonder if anyone read Nathan Buckleys article on the weekend where he considered Stanton close to being in the top 10 midfielders in the game ?

I did read this article and was surprised Stanton was mentioned during Buckley's run-down. Personally I think he had one break out season and ever since then we have expected him to just continue to improve but his field kicking has let him down a bit. Don't think he should be traded though he seems a good enough player.

Im just gonna rain on the love parade in here. His last 10 minutes of the match were putrid. The slack i will give is whether the instruction came from the bench but no other player seemed to be as negative as him so i doubt it a little. It is clear to anyone our skill level is not good enough to ice a game from that far out but he was the only guy out there screaming and pointing arms to the younger guys (Hurley, Pears) to kick sideways rather than attack. Lucky for him Roo missed the goal and everyone slips it to the back of their memory but the number of times he sold his team-mates into trouble with shit handballs and then stood there watching with his hands on his knees while the opposition ran away with the ball left me fuming. This was a pefect example of a Stanton game where the stats dont tell the real story.
Please tell me you're not serious about his last 10 minutes. He was on the ground with a TORN GROIN FFS! Did you not notice that he could barely run and handballed at every opportunity?

Some people have absolutely no clue.

That is the big footy way.

wait for the team selection thread - now thats a real laugh.

1) he consistently puts his team mates under pressure by giving off when the opposition are practically already tackling them 2) is no good under pressure and 3

This analysis is spot on...

Cannot question his hard running and when he is in the clear he is a decent kick...
Is he tradeable?....yes
Is it likely?...no

I am a fan of Stanton, i love his run and i know his disposal can let him down but he never stops running, he is much harder at the ball then he use to be and his tackling is a lot harder than it has been in past seasons and also he can kick a goal.

Okay he is no Gary Albett but in his own way he is an important and talented midfielder, i think for a 22 year old he is headed to being one of Essendons best midfielders.

Tonight i saw three essendon players play well and each had something in common, if it was up to the Bigfooty Bombers they would have been delisted years ago, i speak of Monfries, Stanton and Dyson.

Tonight they gave those bomberfans the bird and i hope those bombers are enjoying the taste of the egg on their faces.

He could hardly walk FFS - He stayed on the ground and played it out though.

As for going sideways in the last 10 minutes - Watson stated after the game they were trying to ice the clock since we had basically no rotations left and everyone was dead tired.

I wonder what game people watch sometimes.

Since he's been 19 he's finished top 5 in our B&F all but one year. He is clearly our #2 mid, if not our #1. The opposition tags him every week, and have been doing so for two years. And he's 23.

Jesus some people on here are critical. The guy runs himself into the ground while bloody injured, yet is still taking a cop. Last week he twice picked out targets in the last quarter in the F50, this week he did that again, yet half of BF will only critisce his kicking.

He may not be top 10 in the competition, but there is not a midfield he wouldn't walk into when fully fit. The idea we can afford to lose him is ridiculous.

It was in The Age yesterday but there is no link there yet.
Very witty Trip:thumbsu:.

I have to say though when i read that article that I was surprised Buckley went for Stanton over Watsdon, irregardless of his exploits today. Perhaps too many similar types in the context of his article.
Can't wait til Lloyd plays on and you cop a red.

Hmmm, BtG.
But nicely inverted re those that are able to verify that event!!

here here. too slow and too s**t for our gamestyle.
jobe, mcveigh and lonergan all better in and under players than stanton...

time to go.

Stanton doesn't play as an in and under player you idiot! He is used as a link player. He is the one that runs to space at the end of quarters and gives players an option.

stanton is trash under pressure ! trade for deledio :)

!! GO BOMBERSSS

This is my major problem with him.

The OP is adding weight to this argument that does not exist.

There is not a person around that would consider de-listing Stanton. I would see myself as being amound the harsher of Stanton's critics but there is no way I would suggest, even at my most frustrated, that Stanton should be de-listed (if I even thought about it I apologise).

There are deficiencies in Stanton's game that are overlooked in favour of his strengths, which is probably fair (his running capacity should be used defensively to cover for the likes of Lovett and Winderlich who are far more damaging when going forward). The scenario that sees Stanton out of Essendon is, a more than likely, hypothetical trade scenario involving a player like Deledio who is undoubtedly superior.

For the record I didn't see yesterday's game as invoking this sort of response from his followers (which is probaby why he is such a frustration - it isn't even his fault). He was good, but there were plenty of players better.

Not in my opinion.

Stanton is more consistent, gets more of it and handles tags far better. Stanton also has a bigger heart than Deledio and you can't teach that.

Also, Deledio's effective possessions aren't that much better than Stantons really.

Last 4 weeks : 31 @ 58%, 14 @ 71%, 24 @ 50% and 26 @ 81%.

Worryingly with those effective possession stats the majority of his possessions are handballs. So you would think that his kicking must be shocking as its hard to not have a high effective disposal rate when the majority of them are handballs.

Just because he was a number 1 pick doesn't automatically make him a special player.

Agree. This same flog was a Dyson basher and claimed that Hurley was quite slow off the mark , among other stupid posts.

Stanton is a B-Grade player. Probably always will be. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Never had a Brownlow vote, which is interesting. I wish he would spend more time forward and kick more goals but he can only be where the coach tells him to be.

Best thing is he's still quite young and will get better. Will probably end up playing 300 games and you don't get rid of players like that.

All i noticed was him running from one back pocket to the other without much discomfort and numerous times ran flat out to recieve yet when it turned over he stood there.

You could find at least 50 posters that have said the exact same things.

Get a life. Stalking is not cool :thumbsu:.

Who are you talking about there?

Then you clearly weren't watching the game. He never ran flat out in the last quarter. He barely got above a jog.

Pretty good game for someone with a hip injury.

Continues to put an argument up to the muppets who would trade him for a pick.

(Because look how good kepler Bradley, Mark bolton, Daniel McAllister) worked out for us.......

Good on him if he stuck the game out with an injury. However the fact still remains that he did the same things yesterday as he does every game, which is make poor decisions by putting team mates under pressure.

I don't want to be a Stanton basher, and there is no way we should delist him. I would only want to trade him if it was for someone decent. I think he has potential in there somewhere, but he is still 22, so there is plenty of time for him to break lose and become a great midfielder. Just not this season.
