Gibbs needs a harder edge to take the next step

I felt the same way even when we beat Richmond first up. Something about him just doesn't seem right.

I have no 'mail' or inside sources - just a gut feeling.
was the vindaloo - try Somac

Also got the feeling he's gone. He is so disinterested, and for a player of his calibre, something just isn't right.

Watch him tear it up in Adelaide in future years, a team with a descent coach, and one that actually has a game play. I'm sure the current coaching situation has something to do with many of our players putting in sub-par performances.

If we look at players like Voss, Buckley etc, the one thing that seems missing in his game is more intensity and a harder edge to his game

Do you remember Voss and Buckey at 21 years of age? They weren't exactly the tough men you might recall from their latter years.

Seriously, you've chosen to compare Gibbs to arguably the best two performed mids of the last 15 years and you know what... at 21yo Gibbs compares favourably.

Is that the game plan that saw Melbourne beat Adelaide with a scoreline of 7 goals to 5 goals? The game plan that actually sees Adelaide sitting on 0-3. How many premierships have Adelaide won since Craig took over as coach in 2004?

I would hve no issues at all if we dropped Gibbs for a week or 2. In fact, I would encourage and applaud it.

We all know how good Bryce can be, and he can be absolutely brilliant when he is on. His disposal is outstanding and he has all the tools to be up there with the very best in the league.

The issue is he doesn't look like he wants it at all. He is unbelievably talented and the problem is that he knows it. His efforts are poor and he cruises around, seemingly never getting out of 3rd gear.

Gibbs is one of my favourite players but he needs a serious rocket up his ass. We will not drop him but he seriously needs it. That or a massive spray from Ratts who should not be putting up with anything less than 100% effort from any player out on the park, no matter who they are.

100% with you there.

He's had one bad game. Get off his back.

He's achieved 10x as much as most AFL players at age 21.

He was poor against Richmond.

Stats mean shit all.

He is a brilliant footballer when he wants to be but so far this season he has shown that he doesn't really care.

Needs to lift. If that means beign dropped to the Bullants then so be it - we will be a better team for it and he will be a better player for it in the long run.

We cannot have players out there representing the Carlton Football Club giving less than 100%. Gibbs looks like he's struggling to go at even 50%.

Fair enough!

My post was more about Scotlands form, which has been to good to waste elsewhere.
Gibbs therefore being given a role both he and the club are comfortable with.
Still 20 minutes of football isn't always enough to get your head in the game.

He's very soft. Unfortunately like a lot of our players have been to start the season. He needs a run back in athe Ants, but we know that's not going to happen.

At the moment there seems to be about 4 or 5 max that try 100 % of the time, and that's too much of a load to carry the others who aren't. The sad thing is that the guys with limited potential, Robbo and Army are the one's that look the hungriest.

Agreed. Disposal count can be misleading. Did not have a single one percenter in the first two rounds, tackle count is low, body language is poor and refuses to chase. Won't be dropped but needs a rocket.

ratten disagrees check the coaches association votes for round 1,

it is about the teams expectations of a player and his role on any given night not the supporters

i am willing to concede he was very poor against the bombers and a vast improvement on that is needed this week or i will become concerned.\

it is not all doom and gloom (yet)

This thread is ridiculous. If Ratten would let Gibbs off the leash instead of giving him a job eack week we would see how good he really is.
Week 1 job on Deledio, Week 2 job on Brennan. He is a number 1 pick let the kid play his own game and leave him in the middle and we will see how good he is. He finished top 10 in the Brownlow as a 20 YO and is now just turned 21. He reminds me of a young James Hird, i think you are expecting way to much he is never going to match Voss in hardness not many players would.

Even if Gibbs or anyone else for that matter is tagging it doesn't mean they cannot still attack the ball with passion. Too often Bryce goes in and out of intensity. He has more skill than Murph but far less consistency in his desire. Further I am not expecting him to be a hard nut like Voss but am expecting him to be swithched on mentally. This would see him give his best regularly. Having said this half the Carlton side is not strong in this area. Just shows more with Bryce as he is perhaps the most talented on the list.

You clearly weren't at the Richmond game, he was one of our best.
He was shocking against Essendon, but then so was 80% of the team.
I agree that Gibbs needs to be more consistent, but he shouldn't be dropped for one poor game, or we'd be making 15 changes this week.

I am not saying it is all doom and gloom. Far from it - he is a brilliant footballer......when he wants to be. It just seems he doesn't want it enough.

I was most definitely at the Richmond game. Gibbs ended up being in our best because he got a heap of the ball. But he is that talented a footballer that he isn't doing enough. As I said, he's a brilliant footballer when he wants to be. I want to see that desire burning in him. I haven't seen that yet.

Because of his potential & talent, more is expected from him, whilst he is also one of my favourites, and touted as a future leader, his game on saturday night was disappointing, particularily that shot on goal then his reaction.

Not singling him out, others were just as bad but more is expected from him at times, having said that he;ll probably have a blinder on Saturday...I hope so, he's great
