dont know if its been done i was just interested to see who people thought was the most underated mfc player of the decade 2000-2010...
ryan ferguson, nathan carrol, phil read, cam hunter... thats all the 'funny' ones

my serious nomination is nathan brown
would love to have his run and hardness from the half back flank

Re: most underated mfc player of the decade

Stephen Tingay or Todd Viney. I know they were both rated but I don't think they were recognized outside the club as the champions that they were.

Tingay was injured all year in 2000 and Viney retired in '99.

We don't need a thread for this, the football world knows McDonald was one of the most underated footballers of all time and it's definately been proven this year.

Re: most underated mfc player of the decade

Nathan Brown is hard to beat, always liked Guy Rigoni too

Re: most underated mfc player of the decade

By decade I'm guessing the OP means 2000-2009, which would rule out Viney and Tingay.

I always rated Clint Bizzell very highly. He came from Geelong as an erratic forward but developed into a very reliable and courageous defender. Still remember those three efforts in a row against Adelaide in the 2002 Semi Final.

Nathan Brown was definately an underrated player, I bet many non-Melbourne fans wouldn't have known that he actually missed out on the 2004 Best & Fairest by a single vote to All Australian Jeff White.

For a single season, Steven Powell in 2000 was excellent. A tough inside midfielder, he racked up almost 600 disposals and 32 goals, most of them helicopters from 50m on the run. A shame he suffered some injuries and ended up leaving for nothing in 2003.

McDonald was one of the most underated footballers of all timer.

For the first few years he was, he got some deserved recognition late in his career.

If we are only talking MFC supporters I don't include him because he's been rated by us for a long time.

Re: most underated mfc player of the decade

Brock McLean has gone from being the most highly rated player the most underrated player from our recent history.

I think people forget how good he was. Am I the only one that still likes him?

EDIT: Also Matthew Whelan, Paul Wheatley, Daniel Ward.

Re: most underated mfc player of the decade

Yeah you probably are...

In all seriousness tho, Brock was a good footballer back in the day when the game was slower and he could run. His kicking deficiencies weren't as obvious either prior to precision kicking being an important part of modern football. In 06 Brock was immense...

I still haven't managed to change my avatar from Brock dragging us over the line in our last finals victory.

Re: most underated mfc player of the decade

I always had a soft spot for Simon Godfrey.

The QB 2007 goal he kicked on his right after baulking 3 guys was up there with the best

Re: most underated mfc player of the decade

Brown, Ward, Wheatley all very good on their day and pretty consistent players

Steven Powell. Our list management staff didn't rate him and consequently traded him :( He was vital in 2000, kicking goals from the midfield.

This.

Matthew Whelan also, good back pockets aren't easy to find.

Surely you jest?

Godfrey was a spud of the highest order, right up there with Big Al Nicholson. How they managed to play that many games has me dumbfounded.

McDonald would win this hands down, however seeing as he was never under rated by Melbourne supporters I won'tr choose him.

It's one of either Bizzell, Brown or Rigoni

Godfrey butchered the ball from time to time but he worked as hard as anyone i have ever seen. He was tough, and gave everything for the jumper. If only we had more players who showed that level of heart....

And for the record, Nicholson was not that bad. Another who never gave up.

Agree with McDonald although he was only really underrated outside the MFC walls.

I'm sorry but I can't agree with you on Godfrey or Nicholson. They might never have given up but they were useless. <end of story>

Just cause you said hey?

Nah, just pretty much until you can prove to me that Nicholson and Godfrey were not useless.

yep i completely agree with clint bizzel, thought the way he and the coaching staffed turned him from the ineffectual forward to a very solid clint bizzel, from an era of defenders that loved jumping third man in an biz certainly wasnt afraid, very solid as a backman an probably my nomination for number 2...
i just think for mine for a bloke who always went in hard , ran carried was tough as nails and reliable, browny was the best of thos gazillion running half backs we accrued.. ward, bell, wheatley, walsh,

i probably didnt nominate junior cuz personally i knew how good he was , and didnt underate him at all, he was also named all australian towards the end of his career (09 if memory serves)

http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pp-melbourne-demons--anthony-ingersonFrom early 2000
Ingerson really made a huge difference to our backline when he came. An left a huge dent when was gone, also I nominate Troy Broadbridge, cas not many supporters from other teams would have seen the improvement he had made.
http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pp-melbourne-demons--andrew-leoncelli
Leoncelli was always underated.

Well done for mentioning an elephant in the room. I dont think Troy had the chance to be the most underated because he hadnt done enough.. but he was headed for a nomination for sure.
