Very interesting read...

COLLINGWOOD midfielder Dane Swan has admitted he was "pretty beaten up" before last month's altitude training trip, but says he is already feeling the benefits of the 12-day Arizona journey.

The 27-year-old, who travelled to the US with Darren Jolly, Nathan Brown and Brent Macaffer for a mid-season fitness top up at altitude - a training technique designed to increase the body's mass of red blood cells - has played two matches since his return

Yeah lets dont send any players there after the end of the 2011 season. I reckon we should send them to Falls Creek for the high altitude training. :p

Falls creek!! Bugger that

They can train atop eureka tower
My last post was sarcasm for those playing at home

With how crap we travel (won 15 or last 18 non Vic games) why would we send a guy to Arizona?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Surely the travel will kill him as seen by his 2nd BOG against Swans and his lazy 30+ against Hawthorn.

Jolly seems shot too.

Swanny no doubt has a few extra blood cells running around in his veins at the moment thanks to Arizona.

However, i think the other factor was that he had two weeks off to rest his general soreness, corked thigh whatever he had.

The high altitude would also would have assisted Jolly's fitness levels, so i agree with you guys, that goes a long way to offsetting Nate's knee issue ;)

I found this interesting

"At the end of the game, everyone is fatigued and the game opens up a lot because everyone is fatigued, and you feel that you're not running with the speed you were in the games last year," he said.

"In saying that, sometimes you just have to manage yourself in the first half - just not really go as flat out as I would have last year for instance - just because the game is won at the end of the fourth quarter.

"You don't need to be in front at half-time; you just need to try and manage your workload in the first half so you can come out and give it a crack in the last half and last quarter when the game needs to be won.

Explains the strong last quarter finishes if all the players are keeping something in reserve for the final charge. Other sides are going flat chat all game and getting exhausted, our players just seem to be going at a steady pace then cutting loose in the last, I wonder if it'll stay that way for finals.

Finals are likely to be full on from the start you'd think.

Will be interesting to see how Buttifant handles the training for that...whether he keeps holding them back a bit to preserve them, or whether at some stage he adopts the full on style, pre finals, so they get used to that method.

They do seem to 'have a rest' in the third qtr a bit sometimes, maybe that's part of the strategy that Swan alludes to.

To all those people praising the outcomes of the mid season trip, don't you think the players would have come good anyway? How do any of you know the extent of their progress prior to leaving for Arizona? I am not suggesting the trip was harmful, though it was for Brown, but how do we measure the benefit?

I have not read Swan's article and don't think I will bother because it is sure to be full of praise for the trip and its effects. We have all seen what happens to Swannie when he does say what he thinks. I imagine that he has been asked to put a positive spin on it for the club. He sure as hell, along with Jolly, seemed less than keen on making the trip in the first place.

(The slightly more aggressive nature of my recent posts might have something to do with giving up smoking 8 days ago after 40 years of puffing!)

Could just as easily happened back here in Australia. Or do you know something we don't?

I have been a keen bushwalker for years as was my father. I have never had a knee injury of this kind in 57 yrs of walking nor has anyone I know. If you know anyone who has cracked their kneecap on a walk then you are a step ahead of me. Otherwise, I do know something you don't!

Just takes a slip

I've seen someone do it at flinders street innthe wet, slip land hard flat on your knee you can crack a knee cap nothing sciencey about it. Just bad luck

They might have come good but not to the levels they're at so soon. They might have been behind the 8-ball for the remainder of the season, always trying to catch up on their fitness. Jolly, Swan and Caff have been reported as being the standouts at training as soon as they returned and the way they've played in their games so far they look to be in peak fitness again. But you're only ever going to know by what the players and staff say, and so far it's all been positive.

Why didnt they send Benny J?
He wouldn't have been able to train over there as he did his hamstring. The only thing for him to do there is take time off and wait for it to heal.
