in our list development, we need to ensure that we have the second-tier KPP both forward and back that can step in when the first-choice KPP go down with injury.

This has been one of the biggest single areas of concern this year that we have had no adequate replacement for either merrett or brown, added to that was/is the injuries to second and third tier players ie staker to a lesser degree lester and patful, leaving us very vulnerable in our back half, and young and inexperienced in a forward half (Karny corny & retzy).

whilst it is recognized that kpp take longer, i think we need to be inking some in and if the opportunity arises taking them.

I think that is where a 1 round mid season draft would be handy. If your key defender goes down and your developing talls aren't working out then you can draft a key position defender from the state leagues.

Just wondering if the compo pick your using this year was the pick for Rischatelli?

Also how come the club chose to execute the pick this year in a draft where the first round extends out to 25ish, instead of waiting for 2012 which is being talked up as a super draft.

Technically we're using the compo pick the Bulldogs got for Harbrow, on-traded for Sherman (yoink!), though I'm pretty sure there's no discernible difference between that and Rischitelli's.

Details here, including reasoning from Kerr:

Lions National Talent Manager Rob Kerr said the decision made after reviewing the current structure of the Club’s playing list.

“We are looking to build the depth of our playing list and feel there is a benefit in bringing a new player in at the end of this year as opposed to waiting until the end of 2012,” Kerr said.

“This pick will ensure we have the opportunity to select two kids in the top 27 or so in this year’s Draft.”

Read: we need players stat!

Our recruitment team's done well in recent years with lower picks so I'll back 'em in.

Now, a question of my own: at what point does the academy start impacting our drafting? I assume Kerr/Hadley have started to pencil in possible selections from as early as next year (though likely the year after). Does that impact the sort of player we go after now, or should academy players be considered as a bonus?

I would think you consider academy players as a bonus. Academies aren't proven grounds for sourcing players. Worse case senario is you have a spoil of talent on the list, and you can trade a few players for the ones your missing. You never know what can happen to any given player, so i think it's a bit risky to say, hey, we have lots of mids coming through our academy, lets try target KPP in the draft. Even if the academy players are good, they might be injury prone or end up wanting to leave or any number of things.

hff's above post just proves how much of a waste it would be to use the first pick on a skinny tall when there will be to many good mids to pass up

the talls mentioned are pretty good as i have seen all first hand shinners or hartigan are my prefererances because of their versatility wouldnt mind both actually and should hopefully end up at brisbane and will make an immediate impact

Does anyone know if we will have a compo pick from last year left for the 2012 draft?.

This is the way I see it - Brennan went to the Suns as a straight out trade as they had already taken Rischitelli... we gave them the compo pick that we received for Sherman and picks 10 and 48...we got Bewick, pick 5 (Polec),pick 25 that was Collingwood's original first round pick (used for Karnezis) and pick 27 that was the Sun's original second round pick that became 28 (used for Lester) when North Melbourne used a compo pick for Harper at 27.

I believe we will use the Rischitelli compo pick this year and then (as it stands now)have no compo pick in the bank for 2012...I could be wrong if we got a compo for Brennan but as it was a normal trade,I don't think so.

Yeah I'm sure we do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they still took Brennan as an uncontracted player instead of us trading Brennan to them. Hence we picked up another band 3 compensation pick (which is the one we traded back to them along with pick 10/48, in exchange for Bewick and pick 5/25/27). So they still took him as an uncontracted player (gave the two teams another pick to work with in the trade), but we had to agree to Brennan leaving (which is why they offered the trade above)

So we have three compensation picks from that year;
Brennan - traded back to GC
Harbrow/Sherman - using that this year
Rischitelli - still in the bank

Yes,that is ringing a bell now.

We need a couple of immediate impact footballers. I have seen enough of Shane Tuck since he has come back to suggest this bloke has been unfairly left out of his footy team. His brother Travis also seems to be back on track and at his best he would walk into our team.

So what i am proposing is that we get ourselves a couple of Tucks! They would cost nothing and add a hell of a lot of starch to our team. Both blokes are fitness junkies. I think it is a calculated risk. An upgrade on the Buchanan and Clarke scenario.

Before anyone poo poos it i ask this question

Raines or S.Tuck

Who would you prefer to have playing for our team?

Why? I don't think that'll be enough to get us into serious finals contention, so I'd rather focus on the mid to long-term rather than (more) stop-gap measures. Thus 23/24 is about my age limit on any older players we should look at drafting/trading.

An argument could be made that we need more mature bodies to provide the structure to help bring the kids on, but I'm not sure I buy that.

Raines v Tuck - thanks mum I knew 1 day I could use this.

Get Dayne Zorko
If you are suggesting Zorko to be considered, should one also look at fellow Broadbeach player who went to SEQ after playing with sandringham [VFL] in 2010 in Kellen Geary?
He shares with ex-Richmond and Western Bulldogs star Nathan Brown the distinction of being the only players to have won two TAC Cup B&F awards with the Bendigo Pioneers, having done so in 2009-10.
The person he beat for this award in his second year in the elite U18 competition was none other than boom Richmond youngster Dustin Martin.
He smashed the 3km time trial record at the NAB AFL Draft Camp in Canberra in 2009 with a time of 9min43sec.
And, according to officials wherever he’s played, he is a natural leader and an outstanding young man.
Little wonder there is a collective disbelief in football circles that Geary was overlooked in the NAB AFL National Draft not just in 2009 but also last year, when the Gold Coast Suns took the cream of the talent crop.

Has anyone watched him play this year and care to offer some thoughts.

Seen a bit of him. Good player, but as you would expect with someone who has been so obviously overlooked there aren't really any standout qualities. Might be worth a rookie spot, is a hard worker and good inside ability, just a bit vanilla.

Cheers tll - seems strange how some players can win B&F's or in other instances captain a state team and still get overlooked, they obviously have 'something'. Don't know if is the vanilla or old less than 180cms chestnut [I believe Kallen is somewhere between 177-179cms cotter] but from here on in the world of football drafting for me, I'd be ranking 'footy brains' very high on the list of prerequisites - just don't know how us amateur guessers of the falling of the draft are going to find the info to those corner stones...

Another one on the "just looks like a good footballer" list is Kane Mitchell. I saw little bits of him during the Foxtel Cup and he knows how to play. Wins plenty of contested footy but runs hard enough to receive too. Word from a couple of guys involved in the State game was that he has the goods to step up.
