Chris Judd - Greatest player of the 21st Century (so far)

Here I was thinking we would be spared all the Carlton supporters and their "Judd is the greatest crap" after Judd did not win the Brownlow.

The guy has played one decent quarter in his last 3 finals.

Give me Ablett any day.

If this thread was made in 2007, it might have been true but Ablett passed Judd at that time and hasn't looked back. Judd would probably be 2nd though.

Career
Judd 0x had 40+ poss
Ablett 9x had 40+ poss

Judd 4x had 35-39 poss
Ablett 20x had 35-39 poss

Judd 37x had 30-34 poss
Ablett 34x had 30-34 poss

Judd 193 goals
Ablett 280

all this also yet played less games

Why stop at 30+?

20+: Judd 150, Ablett 124.

B&Fs: Judd 5, Ablett 3
AAs: Judd 6, Ablett 5

10+ votes in Brownlow: Judd 9, Ablett 5
15+ votes in Brownlow: Judd 8, Ablett 5
20+ votes in Brownlow: Judd 5, Ablett 5

Judd is an excellent player, however Ablett has him comfortably covered if the criteria is best player drafted in 2000 or later.

Ablett was drafted in 2002 im pretty sure.
I'm positive he was drafted in '01. Same with Judd.

I have no problem with people saying Ablett here, he is definitely a once in a generation type of player, and his accolades speaks for themselves. I think based on longevity though, Judd may have him beat (at this point in time, that could change over the next 5 years.) Ablett, while good early in his career, didn't really break out and become one of the elite until his 6th year in the league, in fact he polled just a total of 14 brownlow votes in his first 5 years. Judd meanwhile was basically a stud from the get go. His 03-06 years were remarkable and incredibly dominant. Ablett from '07 onwards has been a freak though and arguably the best in the game, but Judd's been right up there with him despite the small drop off since his West Coast days.

Both are brilliant pollers in the Brownlow (only two players to poll 20+ votes on 5 ocassions). According to the umps:

BOG:
Judd 41
Ablett 28

2nd BOG:
Judd 24
Ablett 14

3rd BOG:
Judd 14
Ablett 21

Total:
Judd 185 (79 games)
Ablett 135 (63 games)

Guess it's no surprise that Judd is so far ahead given he's been in the top 10 players in the league for 8 or 9 years, to Ablett's 5.

Ablett > Judd

Gary Ablett Jnr is the first, and only player, to be awarded the AFLPA MVP (Leigh Matthews Trophy) three times. Also, the Brownlow Medal is the stupidest way to compare players.

This is why crazy people should not be aloud to post.

Dude whats with the HA's ?

Really its like a crazy rant and you went off with some crazy laugh right in the middle.

I must say i loved it.

The HA HA HA, is me laughing at the fact that the so called greatest player of the 21st century (in Carltank supporters eyes only) , DIRECTLY cost Carlton the game with his turnovers (the one that went straight to the WCE player in front of goal).

And I love the fact the Cartank supporters are trying so hard to justify Judd's place in the game, it's almost bordering on pathetic.

Okay time to close this thread down.

As usual and like in every other one of these kind of threads, everyone who isn't a Carlton supporter thinks Ablett is a superior player. We are just going around in circles people.

Why stop at 30+?

20+: Judd 150, Ablett 124.

Because 30+ is a commonly held threshold of a very good game by a midfielder.

B&Fs: Judd 5, Ablett 3

Year (Final Position of side)

Judd: 2004 (8th), 2006 (1st), 2008 (11th), 2009 (7th), 2010 (7th)
Ablett: 2007 (1st), 2009 (1st), 2011 (17th)

AAs: Judd 6, Ablett 5

10+ votes in Brownlow: Judd 9, Ablett 5
15+ votes in Brownlow: Judd 8, Ablett 5
20+ votes in Brownlow: Judd 5, Ablett 5

Both of these stats are indicative that Judd was better earlier, whereas Ablett took time to develop.

It's my opinion of course, but Ablett is clearly a superior player to Judd.

I love the fact that the perception of Judd has done a complete 180 in the last year. From '08 onwards it was 'No Judd, no Carlton.' Now apparently, he's costing us games:D

They were both drafted in the same year, so age isn't a factor. Judd in his second season was a better footballer than Gary Ablett in his fifth.

Is Koutoufides one of the best ever players based on an unbelievable 2000, which many claimed was one of the most dominant individual seasons of all time? Of course not.

Fact is, Judd 2004-2006 was the clearly the game's best player. Just as Ablett's 2007-2011 has him as the game's best players.

Difference being that 2003, 2007-2011 Judd was one of the game's elite. Ablett was nowhere near it 2002-2006.

Please, Judd was not elite in 2003.

His first two years (02 and 03) where very good for a young fella, but not elite, his break out year was his third in 2004.

Stop making BS up.

Best and fairests? Judd ahead.
All Australians? Judd ahead.

How about we rank them by individual season?

1. Ablett (2009)
2. Judd (2006)
3. Ablett (2010)
4. Judd (2004)
5. Ablett (2008)
6. Ablett (2007)
7. Judd (2011)
8. Ablett (2011)
9. Judd (2010)
10. Judd (2009)
11. Judd (2005)
12. Judd (2008)
13. Judd (2007)
14. Judd (2003)
15. Ablett (2005)
16. Ablett (2006)
17. Ablett (2004)
18. Judd (2002)
19. Ablett (2003)
20. Ablett (2002)

Ablett 4 of the 6 seasons, Judd 9 of the top 14 seasons. Might argue with the order of some of the seasons but from 9 down it's pretty clear cut that Judd dominates.

Adam Goodes. Only Player this era/century to win the Brownlow in 2 different positions. Most durable player in the AFL playing 300 of 306 games while having some bad injuries in the process. Champ of the game and so is Ablett. Not Judd.

Go back to prior 2007 and 30 was a very rare feat indeed. You do realise that there's something 30,000 more disposals per year these days than there was back in 2004?

In Ablett's period of dominance there's over 150 more disposals per game and he played in a Geelong team that broke all the records for most disposals, so of course disposal stats are going to be skewed towards him.

I would have thought 17 more BOG performances is as good an indicator as anything that Judd's had the better career.

Good call on Goodes but come on mate, it's one thing to say Ablett and Goodes > Judd. It's another thing to say Judd's not in their class.

Elite might be going too far but he finished runner up in the B&F in 2003. Mike Sheahan had him in his top 50 players.

He was 7th for the league in clearances and 11 for contested possessions as a 2nd year player. He was about 60th in the league for disposals per game and of the top 60, only Pavlich and Mcleod kicked more goals than him.

Elite? Perhaps not. Yet as a second year player he produced a season better than anything Ablett managed in his first 5. And therein lies the difference.

Aside from answering your question as to why another poster chose 30 possessions as the cut off point, please point out where I used disposal figures as justification for Ablett being better than Judd?
