Masten has had a bad knack of building his fitness level right up, maybe plays a couple of decent games and then pow, he picks up a minor knee or leg injury and he's out for 6>8 weeks. I think every season he has been on the list he never played 6 games straight fully fit.

All Maston needs for his breakout year is to not get injured. He trains hard and runs hard. It's taking a while to control the size of Mastens ego and wait for him to mature a bit and I was happy to see him playing WAFL last year and made to earn a spot.

Sheppard is another who is getting closer and Stevens looks hungry for it, Swift is still working hard at his game, Stevensons kicking is what saved him from being cut and we also have Hams and hopefully a fitter Strijk also wanting games.

Debuting in 2012

Which part of that article says he'll be ready to play AFL in 2012? If he has no pre-season and starts playing WAFL mid-year, it would be a miracle if he plays AFL in 2012. Given his injury history, I don't think he'd even be considered.

The only way Dick would get a game is if we had a heap of injuries and I mean alot. Remember people he has had two knee recos and two shoulder recos, we would be idiots to rush him into the side when we have so many other players pushing for selection. We need to be content with Dick slowly building up his body and maybe paying 8 games in the WAFL later in the year.

The best possible scenario for mine for 2012 is that come September and finals he is playing really well in the WAFL, kicking bags of goals and his fitness is really good and he may sneak into our side due to several injuries to our small forwards. Almost a Casey Green situation.

A trouble free 2012, a trouble free 2013 preseason and thats when I can see him push for selection.

sounds like what he does well is go in head first like a maniac and tackle hard. sounds like he will make an excellent tagger. but is that it?

i havent seen any weapons in his arsenal. sure he can accumulate posessions at wafl, but so does mcginnity. is he elite at stoppages? ie. afl standard? can he play any other roles ie forward, wing, back? and when i say "can" i mean enough to have a consistant impact at afl level. not just plonking him in those other positions. actually do something.

alot of people are hyping him up on here because other people who also havent seen him play are hyping him up and it just goes from there. I just want to know from people that are in the know, you know.

He played a lot of WAFL at HFF. But I'm also not sure about him either, I definitely am not sure he's this automatic Priddis upgrade that everyone regards him to become.

I watched Stevens on TV a few times when he was playing WAFL with the Sharks. Maybe I'm not good at noticing or maybe I was watching atypical games for Kobe but he looked to me to be more of a smooth mover with nice skills than a bash and crash, inside guy.

True, he played on ball when I watched him, but I don't remember him knocking people around the win the ball. He more positioned himself nicely and got it away.

I also remember he took some pretty nice marks.

He's an 188cm inside midfielder who is fearless, tackles hard and has nice clean hands. What set's him apart from Priddis is his size and marking ability and his repeat efforts set him apart from Swift.

He's actually pretty well rounded, he's got enough pace to be thrown on a wing and he's stong enough over head to thrown forward. Isn't a capable defender and he's no tagger.

Stats wise at WAFL level McGinnity doesn't get anywhere near Stevens and neither did Scooter at the same age.

Well behind Gaff and Shuey he's the one I've got the highest hopes for. More so than Scooter and Masten, he has just a few more attributes going in his favor (size and playing style).

I was watching his kicking at training because that is the one thing you didn't mention and the one thing that I have doubts about. Obviously he had OP so his kicking has been restricted the past two years but he should be getting close to full recovery .

If he can get some penetration back and reduce the up and under nature of his kicks then he has plenty of tools to make it in the AFL.

His a decent kick for distance. But it's a little up an under for sure, he lacks a really stable action.

He could play a defensive half forward role or one similar to Eberts last year, not that I was or am a real fan of that.

At full strength he would struggle to get a game obviously but I think this year he should be given a chance to impress, and not just a single game here or there, but at least a month of football.

Like I said I think we need to rest some of our better and older players this year at times, especially weak home games.

Not true. Stevens is quite versatile. He could play through the middle or on a flank and I expect him to be given first crack at Ebo's spot. He rotated between the midfield and the forward line for the sharks and did well in both positions.

While I agree Stevens is fairly versatile as he has shown at WAFL level, those who believe he is a superior alternative to Ebert will no doubt be left disappointed. Stevens has not the same level of versatility as Ebert, who is a better overhead mark and has better goal sense. Also have far more faith in Ebert's defensive abilities on a forward flank.

Whilst I do believe that Stevens will play a part in our future success, it will most likely be in the center. Versatility at WAFL level rarely translates to AFL level, particularly for highly rated junior mids. (see Matsen, Swift, JJ).

As for now, I reckon Hill could have an immediate impact on a HFF. Or even Strijk if he can get fit in time for the season opener. For the future, surely one of Weedon or Newman will make the grade, or both

I agree about the part in the middle but Stevens started to put some good games off the HFF together.

Out of interest, what do you reckon Stevens' main instruction was to focus on at WAFL level?

Not disputing that Stevens played well on a flank towards the years end, just unsure whether this form will translate to AFL level for reasons stated earlier.

The fact that Stevens spent time on a HFF indicates that the coaching staff wanted to involve Stevens in the play beyond the center clearances. Which is no doubt a good thing, even the pure midfielders should be used in a variety of positions to develop different aspects to their game. (This is what made Malthouse such a fine coach).

So the fact that he was used on the flank at WAFL level doesn't necessarily mean he is destined to fill such a role at AFL level. Likewise with Swift and Masten (but even Shuey and Cousins before that) playing in unfamiliar positions for a variety of reasons.

We all know Swift will never be a reciever/winger, but the persistence of the staff to continue playing him in these positions should tell us that West Coast are prepared to give their young mids extended periods in unfamiliar roles, with the intention of giving them more rounded games in the future. So a bit off short term pain and less senior time for long term game. Particuarly in these zoning times it is essential for our mids to develop a defensive side to their game.

Reckon Stevens has just experienced such a year, and excelled mind you. Good signs for the future.

Seriously selling him a little short. He's more fast paced than Pridda throught the middle.

The difference is Eberts marking ability and Stevens is small, Ebert knew how to present. That's the difference.

Correct. His instruction, or the part which the coaching staff thought he was a bit suspect, was his defensive run. He had to 'learn' to run defensively, back the other way, according to trainers I speak to at East Freo. He was too loose for the coaching staffs liking.

I agree with Prankster, i think Embley, Kerr, Glass, Cox, and possibly Priddis will be rested just to keep them fresh, ala geelong. the upside of this is hopefully it will allow guys like Swift and Stevens who kill it in the Wafl but might have only gotten the sub vest a couple times last year, to play 3 or 4 games in a row, then we can really see what their capable of.

For the record i regard both Swift and Stevens as better prospects than Ebert, who i thought really battled to have an impact in position other than inside mid.

Also its worth noting that Stevens is only going into his third year,and if you look back at the 04-07 years good players spent alot of time in the wafl before they cemented their spot in the team, like Lecras and Priddis. But i can see how people are frustrated that games were seemingly pumped blindly into the class of 07 such as Selwood, Masten, Ebert but the same luxury was not afforded to Stevens.
