edit: saying that, live on the couch has made it sound certain so what I heard maybe wrong..

He has taken a role as an ambassador at the Dogs- does a lot of our media work with BulldogsTV.

Can understand him not wanting to juggle the two.

No MMA hater here but to say it is the superior fighting sport and Boxing is dying in comparison is stupid. A kid born yesterday knows who
Muhummad Ali is while Jon Jones mother wouldnt know who he is let alone the average sports fan.
Well guess what. Most kids these days are growing up with MMA. Mums will let their 6 year old kid learn BJJ at that age, but they wont let them punch one another in the head. By time the next generation reach 17 or 18, they will already be purple or brown belts in BJJ, have a background in wrestling and will then want to learn a form of striking (whether it be TKD, Kickboxing, Muay Thai). Face it, all the famous names of boxing that you know today - they will be the last famous names of boxing. In 30 years from now, all the famous fighters will be from MMA, and the nostalgic boxing fans will still refer to Ali and Pacquiao as if they were born yesterday.

As a mad UFC fan and boxing hater I have to agree with this. I can think of 2 Boxing names (Tyson, Ali) that are house hold names.

Most non MMA fans would not know a single fighter.
That will change. Boxing has a history that goes back over a thousand years. MMA has only taken off in the last 20....

You mean the fight where the rules were set up so that Inoki could lie on the ground kicking Ali in the leg for the entire match while Ali wasn't allowed to pick him up.

Because Ali initially came in thinking that it would be a worked match with Inoki, not an actual fight.
HAHHAHAHHA. You mean how the rules were setup for Ali so that Inoki wasnt allowed to kick Ali while standing!!!! The whole fight was setup for Ali to win, with massive restrictions placed on Inoki. And Ali still lost!! Geez you boxing fans make me laugh.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali_vs._Antonio_Inoki

A list of restrictions was imposed on Inoki. He would not be allowed to throw, grapple or tackle Ali, and could not land any kicks unless he had one knee on the mat.[11] Ali’s camp also demanded that the rules not be made public before the fight. As Judo expert and United States Marine Donn Draeger noted: "The rules have been so seriously modified that the contest is no longer boxing versus wrestling. Unless this were done there would be no way to choreograph the match and make it look convincing. Ali can grapple or punch the man down; Inoki is not allowed to leg-dive or tackle. That latter restriction is the same as prohibiting Ali from jabbing. What a farce!"

Boxing has had more 1mil+ ppvs in the last 4 years than any other 4 year period in history. mma ppvs on the other hand have dropped over 50% since 2009. Only 4 mma ppvs have broken 1mil and 3 of those where headlined by a Professional wrestler.

mma is the latest poker, its a fad that has peaked and will fall away to niche sport.
And people say MMA fans are ignorant....

Boxing fans are the most ignorant in the world. The revolution of fighting is here, but rather than embrace it, boxing fans stick their head in the sand and pretend its not happening.

Just figured out he has to fight blokes face to face if he wants to be a boxer. Pulled out pretty quick smart after he clicked onto that fact.

Seriously though, he is probably just content to settle down and spend the rest of his days peacefully clubbing women on the head and dragging them back into his cave. He has earnt that right after such a long and illustrious career.

Big Bad Barry can always just watch videos where he cowardly king hit an unsuspecting Staker.

Might get hurt when they can punch back. Time to crawl back under your rock and stay there

My gawd, people are never going to let that go are they? I watched that incident several times and while unfortunate and stupid, one thing I got from it is that it was pretty clear that a Barry had a mind-snap for a moment there, if he'd conciously wanted to do serious damage he would've faced Staker before striking, not taken a swinging shot, I certainly don't condone it but it's about time people let it go.

As for him backing out, if his reasoning for it is true then I've gained a fair bit of respect for him for it. I very much doubt it's because his opponents will hit back, he certainly doesn't look a guy who'd back down from a fight for that reason.

Regardless of his reasons of pulling the pin on boxing, I look forward to all you
people questioning his courage and implying he is a coward, if you ever see him in public just go up to him and tell him what you think.

Me thinks the anonymous people on the internet are the cowards.

To be fair, when Ali was fighting boxing was a much bigger deal than it is now, and the heavyweight title fight was even bigger symbol of sporting prowess. EVERYONE knew who the champ was. There was only one division - unlike now. Very difficult to compare eras.

I wouldn't say either sport is superior - they're different. Each require unique skill sets and unique abilities. To me it's like comparing Lionel Messi to Gary Ablett. Neither is better than the other, they are both brilliant at their chosen discipline.

Yep they are!!!! scamper scamper

Why sign up to do it if he wasn't prepared for it?

If it's not cowardice it's avarice. Very selfish act.

completely agree. Would love to see someone break Hall's jaw.

As for MMA haters - get with the times. MMA is the superior fighting sport. Even Muhammad Ali got his arse handed to him by a fighter who knew how to do more than just throw his fists. Boxing is a dying sport and MMA is taking over.

Ali wouldnt have gotten close to Jon Jones.

Hmm, I wouldn't go that far. He suffered blood clots from Inoki's kicks, but hardly got his arse handed to him.

Proper level boxing (not just bullshit bouts you see guys like Hoppawate (spl) involved in) requires an amazing level of committment. You see unbelievable talents like Mike Tyson go from unbeatable to a bum when you lose motivation and Hall isn't an unblievable talent like Tyson. Would get demolished by a good boxer.

I'd rather this option than see him matched against underclass fighters and gaining some ridiculous boxing credibility and cult following.

The man is a thug, and i hope it eats away at him that he is well remembered for being so.

The option that he entered the ring and got the sense belted out of him may have been my preferred choice. But then again, he would've been labelled 'Brave' for getting in there.

Actually, I like the back down, coward option the best.

whats with all the north hate for barry hall?

That thug ended a young North Melbourne recruit's playing career with his fists back in his StKilda days. Laughable that he runs scared when finally in a situation where the bloke he is punching is actually watching him as the fists are raised and allowed to hit back. King hit specialist. Coward.

He also had the rules changed the day of the fight once he found out what he was going to be in for.

Who cares if Hall doesn't want to box. At his age, after spending the last 15 years training at a professional level, the idea of spending another few years training at a high level probably isn't very appealing. It's not as simple as standing in front of another man and punching on.

And its only just clicked that he had to train for this?
