Don't rate Green, PK?

I do, very much, just don't think he'll be in the round 1 side. I've got little doubt that he'll be a best 22 player for some time, just not sure it'll be immediate for him. As I said, things often change over the pre-season/NAB Cup, and he's one I can see being overtaken in the short term.

You obviously don't rate Yeo either?

I guess it is crystal ball stuff anyway but I reckon you should start with the 22 that finished the previous season, work in the injured guys who are clearly going to slot straight back into the best 22 (eg Leuenberger) and then see where you are at.

Putting someone like Karnezis back into the side is a leap of faith IMO - he couldn't get a game for most of this year so I'd want to see some actual pre-season form before I am willing to put him into the side for round 1 next year.

As I said, I know it is all guesswork at this point in time but I reckon there are a whole bunch of reasons to include someone like Green or Lester and not much more than hopium to include Karnezis. That's not to say that Karnezis won't repay the faith but he doesn't have the recent runs on the board that the other guys have.

Can't see how Green wouldn't be in the side early next year, unless he is marked for a midfield role and fails to stand up, or if Banfield happens to be in top form, or Green is in poor form, or we draft/trade-in a gun fast, small forward. I'd rate the likelihood of Green being in the team as higher than the other possibilities.

Outside of merely just his good performances, Green's inclusion in the team (along with a few other players such as Zorko and Bewick) gave us a marked structural improvement in an long-standing area of need and, in my opinion, we played winning football more often as a result.

I haven't really explained myself well. While it may make sense to start with the 22 from the last game of the year, history shows that it's rare for that to happen. There are always a few who have a great pre-season, a few who have a not to good one, and a few who injure themselves, making the round 1 lineup one year often quite different to the last game of the year before.

To illustrate my point:

Round 24, 2011 - Lions vs Swans
Adcock, Black, Buchanan, Cornelius, Drummond, Golby, Hanley, Harwood, Hawksley, Karnezis, Leuenberger, Maguire, McGrath, McKeever, Polkinghorne, Raines, Redden, Retzlaff, Rich, Rockliff, Sheldon, Stiller.

2012, Round 1 - Lions vs Melbourne
Adcock, Banfield, Beams, Bewick, Black, Golby, Hanley, Hudson, Lester, Leuenberger, Maguire, McGrath, McKeever, Merrett, Patfull, Polec, Polkinghorne, Redden, Rich, Rockliff, Sheldon, Stiller.

The players who played in just one match are highlighted. That's eight changes we made from our last team in 2011 to our first team in 2012.

To me, this shows that you can't really say with any accuracy that our side in round 1 next year will be similar to our side in round 23 this year. Inevitably there will be changes over the off season - players who have a really good pre season, players who get injured, players who drop off a bit. There are always changes.

My post may have been a stab in the dark, but it was just an attempt to guess, looking at who forced their way in for round 1 this season, who might get in for round 1 next year.

As for being surprised that I left Green, Yeo, or any others out - I don't think there were many expecting Karnezis to miss round 1 next year. I'm pretty sure everyone's round 1 team for 2012 had Pat as a starting player.

It's very common to go along with the most recent history and recent form in footy (I'd even forgot that Sheldon player a few games earlier in the year before watching it back), but I've just tried to be a little more open to the fact that quite a few changes often are made for the first game of the year based on a whole range of factors.

There's no dramas in predicting change - I just reckon it is best done on an evidence base.

Of the players selected for round 1, 2012 (who didn't play the last game in 2011), a fair percentage of them were injured or not at the club. Merrett, Patfull, Banfield were all best 22 players. Hudson wasn't at the club. Lester and Beams were guys who made their debut very early in 2011 only for injuries to ruin their season.

Also worth noting that we were a poorly performed side in 2011 with many question marks over the side. Guys were gifted games without really showing that they deserved the spot. This is not the case in 2012. There's a greater level of stability about the side with guys far more secure and better performed in their role. That being the case, you have to think that it is going to be harder to push your way into the side in 2013.

I guess I want to see good form rewarded and I want to see those guys on the edge of selection really stand up and demand a spot.

Ahhhh Zorko, yep that was an accidental omission, I had the feeling I was missing someone... Raines no though, I think the role could be handed to Beams to enhance his development. He is an exciting talent.

* No Maguire unfortunately I think Merrett and Maguire make a top heavy backline against most opposition backlines. Maguire has been beyond amazing this season but I don't think he's mobile enough to hold down CHB. Merrett could potentially take that position but we all know he's one of the best FBs in the comp.
* Drummond is omitted because I have doubts over his playing future. I know its harsh but it's getting to that stage where I think he's body's just not up to it.
* Staker would be an automatic selection but not sure if he'll be ready by rd.1
* Polkinghorne gets selected because that's just how it is. Plus he was showing some good signs late in the season.
* I think that forward line needs a 3rd lead up forward, ideally Staker when available or Cornelius but I think he's going to take more time. Also Mcgrath showed he still has nous to rip it up down there.
* Backline is a little slow so it might be better for Hanley play off HB and Docherty/ Polec / Karnezis whoever is most ready to play wing

Why is Polec not INGRANED in more peoples 2013 team. The kid posses unique abilities that would be useful at any team let alone Brisbane. When up and running and not injured he is extremely damaging.

Ive posted this video before and remeber it was agreed that Polec has class. In the 2012 NAB cup he was injury free and played really well. In round 1 he played exceptionally well and collected 18 disposals. In round 2 he played badly. Round 3 in 2 and a half quarters he got 18 disposals followed up by two game of 20 disposals. I think that its fair to say he got sore and injured or his tank isnt big enough. If his tank isnt big enough he will build it over preseason.

Polec has not showed any consistency to this point. I have selected players who have shown they are mentally ready to play AFL. When Polec can do this he will be in our best 22 and the team will be better for it.

Guys like Polec and Karnezis are unique talents - but if those guys aren't working hard enough to make the most of their talents, give me a Lester or Harwood type. Modern footy is too demanding to carry guys who are coasting based on natural ability. I think it is now very clear that Voss rates work ethic, defensive intensity and competitiveness above the ability to perform party tricks with ball in hand.

The ideal position is that the most talented are also the hardest working. That's when you see elite players develop. I reckon it took Rich a year or two to work that out so there's lots of time for Polec, Karnezis and co.

The good thing is, footballers with limited talent generally have a ceiling on their development (not always but generally) - the sky is the limit for Polec/PattyK.

There's a part of me that doesn't want to get my hopes up with Staker. I just think it is too much to expect him to return to his peak form next year. And, given his age, he's probably more likely to go backwards after that.

I should add that I love the competition for places. I like the fact that I'm reading people's sides as quality and then realising they've forgotten to name a Black, Hanley or Beams! While I believe that we may not quite be a top 8 side next year, the competition for spots can only help drive improvement.

Missed "Resilience". If anything Polec has not demonstrated this trait. However he is in his second year and his body is still maturing. I suspect he will not start showing glimpses of his upper performance limit until he is in his fourth year and reaches his early to mid twenties.
