Draft still a while away but the trade period will give us a great indication into what we might do in the draft obviously with the mini-draft and the combine (testing, interviews)

Our new rookie project hopefully

Unfortunately, we seem a bit gun shy since our attempt to get a couple of fijian talents over onto our rookie list back in 2008. They failed to get visa's or something like that and one had bad family issues (relatives were involved in some war or something along those lines) so the club pulled back. I haven't heard about us going after anything else like this since. I wonder whether international rookies just arent on our clubs radar anymore?

I'd be all for someone like Shearry, as he looks an outstanding athlete, but the club is soo reluctant to do this type of thing and that worries me a little bit. The closest thing we had was Eddie Prato, but he was just a regular rookie pick that we plucked out of the basketball system in South Australia (i think) after we saw him play a decent game for a local AFL club as a one off. Anyway, I'd really like to see us get onto the international rookie and Elite level sports rookies, as they dont even take up a regular rookie spot! So much potential out their and we are waisting it. Please doggies, have a good look around. You never ever know if you never ever try.

If we get both Hogan & Martin they will forever be compared to who was available at picks 5 & 6 for better or for worse

A Facebook page for afl rumours, can't vouch for their accuracy of rumours but only time will tell. They aren't a bulldogs one, so it's not simply a Dogs fan saying what they want.

I'd prefer to see our talent on the field next season obviously, but if they think they are better, DO IT! We could enter 2014 with the 3 best 18/19 year olds in the nation.

Hopefully the dogs recognize the difference between these "traumatic incidents" and getting an American out of college

As you mentioned it is pretty low risk since they don't take up a regular rookie spot. Worth a shot.

Maybe we can become "America's team".....

I'm keen to hear more about Jesse hogan. Could he be our full-forward (to complement jones and Cordy)? How does he compare to stringer?

While I agree our biggest need is classy midfielders, we also need at least one gun forward. Stringer has been suggested but Hogan could be the man, even if we have to wait another year. Otherwise Mason Shaw perhaps?

So much depends upon Cordy's development. It's an uncomfortable question mark. McCartney has has showed faith in him but I would want to see a significant improvement next year. If he comes good at FF, a fwd line could be built around him but, physical development etc notwithstanding, there's only so much time.

I don't think he'll ever be "the man" at full-forward. I am convinced however that he can be a really really important 3rd tall and back-up ruckman. If he's getting the 3rd best key back he will be very very dangerous. And he can spell Minson or Campbell aswell. Would be a very nice weapon and complimentary guy, but I just don't see him taking the best defender every week and winning games off his own boot.

I'm not sure how Hogan compliments Jones & Cordy but he is more of the traditional 6'4-6-5 big key forward rather than a taller ruck forward like Cordy, a speedier up the ground Jones or a smaller more skilled Stringer.

If we got a trade something like you suggested it would be an absolute steal but I highly doubt Dom Tyson gets traded this year

Hogan is more your kpf, stringer will be your 3rd forward but play more forward.

If we somehow get Martin hogan and stringer I'll be very happy

Cordy would more likely thrive in a third forward role and spell Minson in the ruck. Hard to think of a good comparison but maybe a sort of Leigh Brown type although their styles are different they could share similar roles if that makes sense

I think we are going to need two other key forwards. Jones has the talent to play as the up-the-ground CHF whilst one of Hogan/Stringer/Boyd/(Grant) etc could be the guy at FF

We are more likely to create mismatches that way for Cordy who would play on the 3rd backman

I've been harsh on Cordy in the past because he came with such high expectations but I guess you have to wait till a big guy is at least 24 to judge him.

HOWEVER (in a Stephen. A. Smith voice)

I don't ever see him being a key forward. He could eventually thrive as the third tall. We can only hope

Definitely that 3rd key forward, so the decision for us is whether we think stringer or hogan can be that guy. We should take one of them.

Okay I'm coming round to it too I love it how this board gets set on an idea and then a new better idea comes and everyones like no thats bad and then they start warming to the idea and then they get excited as about it and then it starts again

I've got two dreams and hopefully one of these comes true (My number 1 is Toumpas but lets just put that out of the equation )

Pick 5: Mayes/Stringer/O'rourke
Pick 6: Trade for Martin + Lee
If we trade Williams or Lake and get a pick between 10-20: Garlett/Shaw(only if we don't get Lee)/Simpson/Or any of them ^^^ that slide.
Pick 27: Menzel/Or one of them ^^^ that slide
Pick 3rd round: Hunter
Compo pick: Toy
And then whatever for the rest, try and find a gem I guess.

My personal hope though would be - O'rourke, Martin, Lee, Garlett, Menzel, Hunter, Toy. That would mean we get 2 lightning quick skilful outside players in Garlett and Martin, one perfect midfielder who is highly skilled fast and inside/outside in O'rourke, one talented half back with a long kick in Toy, one tall forward in Lee and one medium forward with insane potential in Menzel.

That would be ridiculously amazing, obviously its not going to go exactly like that but I can dream okay! We would be absolutely set.

If that doesn't happen I want -

Pick 5 and Pick 6 (and probably something else): Martin and Hogan and Tyson or a pick around 10
Pick around 10 (if we get it): Garlett/O'rourke if he is there
Pick 27: Menzel or Simpson
Pick 3rd round: Hunter
Compo pick: Toy
And then best available.

Pull this off Dogs and we will win a flag!

Anyway we will have a good draft regardless of how we pick, so many options.

And then I wake up.

We would have to cut out our list deeply, meaning no Skinner or Markovich. But it would be worth it.

My only issue with Hogan is I don't know enough about him, is he that good that he could be the next big key forward in the game? Can he control our forward line and would it work setting up one like this -

Hunter Jones Higgins
Cordy Hogan Dahlhaus

That looks like it could be amazing on paper (of course thats not always the case though)

If that is true and he is that good (and if he is more of a FF rather than a CHF) then I am happy to bite the bullet and get MD picks 1 + 2. If not then stick with Mayes/Orourke/Stringer.

Define 'impact' - that we win 8 games instead of 7? No one 1st year draftee can make much difference whether they play 2 games or 22.

I dont mind going for 2 mini-draft picks but really I want two classy mids. But if they reckon Hogan is that good....

Jones as lead up CHF, Cordy in the pocket and a gun one on one full-forward is the ideal set-up. Dahlhous as the permanent small forward (struggles midfield in my opinion). Need another buzzy bee up there as well (garlett?). Higgins, grant, and resting Mids round it out.

I'm not sold on the whole Mini Draft pick thing.....it's an added risk in my opinion but concede it's one worth taking if the right player warrants it (not sure Martin fits that bill)... However gambling on two 17 year olds is crazy, we aren't in a position in our development as a team nor strong enough as a club at the moment to take such a punt. We have a number of holes to fill in our team and there's players available this year that will fit the bill nicely....... Pick 5 & 6 are gold and we need maximum bang for our buck........ O'Rouke & Stringer for me.....

I'm not sure if this has always been the case but at least now we have someone to mentor and look after the young indigenous players (Brett Goodes).

Interesting discussion and shouldn't be shied away from... I'm sure this is being discussed at HQ if we're considering Martin. But it's not just about Aboriginal lads, Schofield should be a lesson learnt also. Schofield comes from the same region as Martin, played in the same league. As I mentioned earlier in the the thread, WA is super parochial, over here it's WA vs the rest of the country. And the western suburbs of Melbs is very different to where these guys grew up. Not to say we shouldn't draft Martin but if we do, the right systems must be in place and the Hill and Schofield examples should be our lessons. In saying that, sometimes there's nothing you can do.

Consider also the expectation this kid will have to carry at a club that's been starved of success. Away from friends and family. I feel for him already.

Can play though. He kicked 6 goals and got BOG yesterday in the GNFL grand final.

Would like the club to have a look at Tiwungpitu? as a late draft selection. Skillfull, elusive player in the mold of Betts. Would complement our forward set up well I think.
