Wallace was the hottest of hot properties.

It's unfortunate how it all panned out as we all know he was doomed from the start. Not only did he have to try to redeem a basket case of a club, but they were coming off a wooden spoon to boot.

Deledio was the consensus #1 pick and was a no-brainer with their first pick and he'll always remember the moment he looked at the board and saw Franklin (the enigmatic troubled genius) available but chose Tambling (the next McLeod) instead. Losing arguably the form player in the league to a shattered leg 9 games into his tenure was the ultimate dagger through the heart.

Probably backs my point up somewhat. Richmond 2004 and Port 2012 aren't that much different. Look at what happened to Wallace. If an inexperienced coach had gone in at Richmond how much more would they have struggled? I know there is no answer but Wallace with all his ability took Richmond from 4 wins to 10 and then 11 in his first 2 years. And we don't have priority picks and uncompromised drafts and have gone thru 2 compromised drafts and this year is somewhat compromised with so many carry forward compo picks. So if Wallace struggled back then, an inexperienced bloke with us is going to do it tougher than Wallace.

What was the difference between Port 2012 and Hawthorn 2004?

I'm not sure how any of us plebs can ever "see" what an assistant coach does. That's why we have to rely on the selection panel to do the right thing.

Of course we have to rely on them but doesn't mean that I can't be disappointed that they couldn't get past a casual chat with Eade. How did our last selection panel go?

They were financially stable, had a president that saved his club not one who almost ****ed it up, had started taking full advantage of the great Waverley Park deal, were getting the Tasmania deal right, didn't have to deal with the SANFL, had Dunstal and Dermie on their board some real football people to drive decent football decisions from the businessmen, had heaps of ex premiership champions working in the media to stop their brand being trashed, they had Crawford had 2 top 5 picks in an uncompromised draft that they nailed, they had Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell who got on the field week in week out, they recruited a coach who had coached a flag and a GF at state level before being an an AFL assistant for 2 years. They had a great recruiting team head by Gary Buckenarra who had started drafting elite kicks. And they pinched our bloody fitness coach in October.

All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Tambling was worth the punt, I saw him play in the NTFL and he had superstar written all over him.

Unfortunately Buddy wrote that in marker board pen and it washed off soon after....

The Bulldogs over looked hm, one of their favourite sons, for Brendan McCartney last year. How have the Bulldogs gone? Do they look inspiring?

They may have overlooked him because he was a favourite son.

Getting use to Leon very quickly

Leon's Lair...has a nice ring for thread?

Is it Leon Cameron as in we've offered him the job and waiting for his decision or it's Leon Cameron as in he's accepted the offer? There is a big difference between the two....

Waiting for Hawthorn to finish the season?

Maybe KT just wanted to talk to Eade about Cameron, seeing as he was an assistant to him at the dogs.

Also, been doing some reading and found this article: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/the-pick-of-the-litter-20110827-1jfvn.html

Good article. He sounds like a very good operator. Links to Port Adelaide (Anthony Darcy) never go astray either. ;)

Wonder if his heart sunk a little at the sight of Tom Harley on a coaching selection panel again. :p

As far as nicknames go, seeing as everyone thinks we have no money, maybe it should be Cammo the Ammo? :p

Hmmm I thought Hawks 2004 were in a bit of trouble with disenchanted supporters, a CEO who quit meaning Dunstall had to fill in the pieces.

From their depths they set a membership target, players tanked and they were on their way. I can't be bother searching but it could have been a year earlier I guess.

Could Wallace have not picked Franklin as he had big RICHO!!!!

I love the media. The headline reads "
First things first for Hawks midfield coach, then Leon Cameron to make Power move"
:thumbsu:
and then we see

Nothing official has been agreed, but the Herald Sun understands the Power coaching job is Cameron's if he wants it.
ohhh:thumbsdown:

Well you know it's true

I'm going to be optimistic. Leon is far more experienced than Primus was. Looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the club.

Far more experienced, far better football brain, success follows him.....he comes with huge wraps.

Let's face it, nobody but Primus and those closest to him knew he even had designs on a senior coaching job until he put his hand up out of the blue. Cameron seems to have been anointed or destined since day one to some day take charge somewhere.

Ultimately - that is the important thing.

From the 'Pick of the Litter' article linked above:
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/the-pick-of-the-litter-20110827-1jfvn.html
Former Tiger captain Wayne Campbell played Teal Cup with Cameron and, reunited at Richmond, the pair hit it off to the extent that their 30th birthdays became a joint celebration.
Campbell prefaced his comments about Cameron last week with an important rider — "I'm his friend". But along with the favourable character reference, he described a football brain he considers to be "on a higher plane of thinking on tactics".
"I was in the coaches' box with him at the Bulldogs for a year and he's brilliant. Brilliant," Campbell, now an assistant coach at Richmond, said. "He worked really well with Rodney [Eade], and just had a handle on the whole thing. Rob Murphy would probably tell you about the day he sat up there and was just blown away by the way he could read the game.
"When he became the main assistant, in '08, he dropped everything and said, 'Right, footy's going to be my go.' He was serious about it beforehand but he became ultra-serious then.

Another article about Cameron when he was in consideration for Bulldogs job:

http://tensport.com.au/news/theroar/AFL-Why-history-is-against-Leon-Cameron.htm
In the last decade, only two coaches have taken over from their long-term mentors as the immediate senior coach following the latter’s departure. One successfully.

Installed as favourite with every bookmaker to take over at the Western Bulldogs next year, Leon Cameron holds the advantage of knowing the Bulldogs system and culture better than any other candidate. This is what has also restricted loyal assistants in the past.

We have seen 26 changes in the senior coach position over the last ten years. Of coaches who have spent the majority of their apprenticeship under one coach for a minimum of two years, only John Longmire has successfully taken over from his coaching mentor, Paul Roos.

The second senior coach to have done this is Matthew Primus, who spent five years as an assistant in Port Adelaide immediately after hanging up the boots. It is difficult to say he has coached successfully in the senior position.
<snip>
On the flipside, Matthew Primus has never played or coached at a club beyond Port Adelaide and is struggling to handle the pressures faced off-field, which is reflecting on-field.
<snip>
Floating near the top of the coaching pool, history suggests Leon Cameron has a better chance of taking over at Melbourne or Adelaide than at the Western Bulldogs.

I'm excited about getting fresh ideas into the club from a guy who has experienced some successful systems at different clubs and is highly rated for his tactical acumen.

If he can be backed up with an experienced assistant like Richardson as finny suggests it would be a very good result for Port.

A Leon Cameron / Alan Richardson combo would be nice. Cameron is as experienced an assistant coach as you will get, and from many reports does a great deal of the hands on coaching anyway.

Just on Alan Richardson, wikipedia is telling me he is Matthew Richardson's dad?!? What the
