Wallace was the hottest of hot properties.

It's unfortunate how it all panned out as we all know he was doomed from the start. Not only did he have to try to redeem a basket case of a club, but they were coming off a wooden spoon to boot.

Deledio was the consensus #1 pick and was a no-brainer with their first pick and he'll always remember the moment he looked at the board and saw Franklin (the enigmatic troubled genius) available but chose Tambling (the next McLeod) instead. Losing arguably the form player in the league to a shattered leg 9 games into his tenure was the ultimate dagger through the heart.

Probably backs my point up somewhat. Richmond 2004 and Port 2012 aren't that much different. Look at what happened to Wallace. If an inexperienced coach had gone in at Richmond how much more would they have struggled? I know there is no answer but Wallace with all his ability took Richmond from 4 wins to 10 and then 11 in his first 2 years. And we don't have priority picks and uncompromised drafts and have gone thru 2 compromised drafts and this year is somewhat compromised with so many carry forward compo picks. So if Wallace struggled back then, an inexperienced bloke with us is going to do it tougher than Wallace.

I'm not sure how any of us plebs can ever "see" what an assistant coach does. That's why we have to rely on the selection panel to do the right thing.

Of course we have to rely on them but doesn't mean that I can't be disappointed that they couldn't get past a casual chat with Eade. How did our last selection panel go?

They were financially stable, had a president that saved his club not one who almost ****ed it up, had started taking full advantage of the great Waverley Park deal, were getting the Tasmania deal right, didn't have to deal with the SANFL, had Dunstal and Dermie on their board some real football people to drive decent football decisions from the businessmen, had heaps of ex premiership champions working in the media to stop their brand being trashed, they had Crawford had 2 top 5 picks in an uncompromised draft that they nailed, they had Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell who got on the field week in week out, they recruited a coach who had coached a flag and a GF at state level before being an an AFL assistant for 2 years. They had a great recruiting team head by Gary Buckenarra who had started drafting elite kicks. And they pinched our bloody fitness coach in October.

Tambling was worth the punt, I saw him play in the NTFL and he had superstar written all over him.

Unfortunately Buddy wrote that in marker board pen and it washed off soon after....

Hmmm I thought Hawks 2004 were in a bit of trouble with disenchanted supporters, a CEO who quit meaning Dunstall had to fill in the pieces.

From their depths they set a membership target, players tanked and they were on their way. I can't be bother searching but it could have been a year earlier I guess.

Far more experienced, far better football brain, success follows him.....he comes with huge wraps.

Let's face it, nobody but Primus and those closest to him knew he even had designs on a senior coaching job until he put his hand up out of the blue. Cameron seems to have been anointed or destined since day one to some day take charge somewhere.

In the last decade, only two coaches have taken over from their long-term mentors as the immediate senior coach following the latter’s departure. One successfully.

Installed as favourite with every bookmaker to take over at the Western Bulldogs next year, Leon Cameron holds the advantage of knowing the Bulldogs system and culture better than any other candidate. This is what has also restricted loyal assistants in the past.

We have seen 26 changes in the senior coach position over the last ten years. Of coaches who have spent the majority of their apprenticeship under one coach for a minimum of two years, only John Longmire has successfully taken over from his coaching mentor, Paul Roos.

The second senior coach to have done this is Matthew Primus, who spent five years as an assistant in Port Adelaide immediately after hanging up the boots. It is difficult to say he has coached successfully in the senior position.

I'm excited about getting fresh ideas into the club from a guy who has experienced some successful systems at different clubs and is highly rated for his tactical acumen.

If he can be backed up with an experienced assistant like Richardson as finny suggests it would be a very good result for Port.
