Vlad's reaction, as soon as he spotted this thread. 'Let the hate begin!'

Economics aside, and the obvious brand benefits of cultivating a new supporter base in another market, there is a negative for the traditional Melbourne supporters which could become, if it's not already, an issue. And that is its four games we're missing out on. Is there a cumulative effect? Dunno, but my observation is that for all the rational reasons/benefits tendered, there is a significant group that has a negative emotional reaction to the 'sold' games, which is amplified by the draw. And brands live in hearts not minds.

If we exit the Tassie arrangement then we need to have massive guarantees on minimum number of games against Vic sides, number of Home games against big drawing clubs etc...

A 10 year deal.

Any less then the AFL can f us down the track with commercially unviable fixtures again

Yep, that game against GWS that they will NEVER get back eh?

It's not who we play per se, it's not playing in Melbourne. Being limited.

I would have thought someone such as your good self would have your head around the commercial realities rather than the perception?

I never stated my opinion, merely my observation of the situation.

Given record membership levels - why should they even bother - there is a waiting list.

Whilst the punters might 'happily' have a whinge, they don't withdraw their support in the form of dollars.

I've never supported us playing games in Tasmania and never will. We aren't a Tasmanian club, we aren't a Waverely club either for that matter, we are HAWTHORN and the more time that passes the more we lose any connection with the suburb this club was named after and based at for what - the better part of 75 years?

Ah well, the world's an extremely ****ed up place and the lust for money drives EVERYTHING these days so sure... why not play games in Tassies or wherever else we can whore ourselves out to? I only shake my head at how little this club resembles the Hawthorn I used to know when I was a kid, but then I suppose you could say that about this shitty league as a whole.

The sooner that slimy crooner Demetriou disappears the better for us. He's a shafter. Funny that he played for Hawthorn and shows no loyalty though. Don't need to show it in abundance. But the small things count. He is a business man. I keep forgetting. At the moment looks like he should bring out a christmas sing-a-long CD with Kevin Sheedy on back up vocals if he can get himself away from the AFL luncheons.
Somehow I feel as though we are SO desperate to win a flag and that the AFL smells it. Which is not a bad thing. But look how the AFL exploit it. They give us things we need to deal with and not complain. I think the AFL are quite enjoying screwing us at very possible turn or that they can because we will agree. We have to agree.

Am I wrong in saying that since Hawthorn wanted to decide its own destiny with getting into Tasmania that the AFL feel threatened not so much in a financial way. But that there is a club out there that wants to control its own destiny in some small way.

Amen brother. Problem is Adrian Anderson is next in line (I presume so anyway) and he's an even bigger prick than Vlad if such a thing's possible.

Personally I think the whole AFL Commission is rotten from Fitzpatrick on down. Too many execs who's decisions are governed by profit and self interest. I get the feeling the entire organization would need to be dismantled for the culture to change significantly.

I initially voted yes to the 4 games, after seeing the draw i'd like to change it to "No, bring all games back to Melb", I'll just continue to fly to Melb for 3/4 decent games a year, the schit Tassie has been served up is the AFL's way of trying to scrap the deal and get the Roos as the sole Tassie team.

I want to know how this idea of "tassie games would be played at MCG" gained legs
The whole reason we went to tassie was to avoid the docklands
People mention 2001, the yr before we played in tassie as proof, but fail to recognize that the contract between the afl and docklands management wasn't struck until 2002, where we had 2 home games at the ground to appease the corporates

We failed to get the required guarantees when we went from 2 to 4 games - to help St Kilda out of their deal if I remember correctly
And now the saints are in NZ !!! :)

A frontier Hawthorn pioneered with a lot of work at the grass-roots level, only to be completely overlooked by the AFL when it came time to sending a home & away game to New Zealand.

FWIW, I can't see a random AFL game in 2013 gaining much traction amongst New Zealanders. I know quite a few of them, and they're all union mad and can't stand AFL. Hawthorn did it the right way with focusing on the kids and their parents to slowly grow brand awareness amongst the next generation of sports lovers, but the AFL has come in over the top of them with yet another hare-brained scheme to get Demetriou another mid-season junket.

Thoughts ? - My first thought was here we go again.

Calling the usual suspects.

It would be a good thing to debate if we could get some factual we argued debate
Sadly it's such an emotive issue that these posts tend to degenerate in slanging matches. :(

Good luck.
My first thought is "self serving comment"!

Kennett has gone on record previously saying we would be better off financially moving back to Victoria and yet, we get 4 home games in Tassie and 6 home games at the Mcg.

Whats the point of a Vic member getting a 17 game membership? I've already paid for mine so they will be getting an email of me downgrading to an 11 game membership and I'll pocket the difference thanks.
Understand your point henry.

I don't know what we would end up with if did move back solely to victoria but after being hit with an extra $200+ as a result my 14yr old daughter now no longer qualifying as a "family member" I was still actually considering increasing the level of the family's membership this year but after seeing the draw will definitely put that on hold.

BTW 1 saturday afternoon home game at the G is not what I would consider family friendly etc etc - I am beginning to wonder what we actually did request the AFL re the draw?

Appears we got nothing (no matter how some at the club try to froth it up)!

Anderson won't be the next guy. He'll be lucky to write parking tickets for Stonnington Council.

Yeah bugger Tassie. What about the Hawks playing one game a year in Queensland instead.

Seriously, are we going to go through this again and the AGM just around the corner.

Bosky, I love your passion for the Hawthorn Football Club and you always state it as you feel it. I just wish I could occasionally agree with you. Still your posts are always a must read for one reason or another.

As Simon Nesbit has said around the traps, us supporters need to be prepared IF/WHEN we return the games back to Victoria, that a deal will be stuck ala Essendon, to play them at Etihad.

Yep, dont believe the spin from the club... fancy spruking 6 home games at the MCG FFS... I cringed when I read thats the positive they could find from the draw!

Tasmania is a millstone around the neck of the club

The club gets $18 million for the five years it plays in Tassie plus all income from the games in launceston and until this latest FIXture all our Melbourne home games were at the MCG. There is no way Hawthorn would have agreed (I hope) to playing at docklands. It appears that in dealing with the AFL all agreements should be legally binding as we are not dealing with gentlemen.
