Kerr seems to get 80-89% TOG when he plays out a game, which he did most games in 2012. In 4 games he had 69-79% TOG, in one he had 59% (round 1 vs Bulldogs), and another 36% (round 18 vs Brisbane). I don't see any real evidence in the stats for him pulling a blinder and then getting a rest... he had 7 and 4 disposals in the 59% and 36% games, for example.Thing is though, say we have the game won by half time, we'll take players like Kerr of the ground because we don't need to risk injuries, while he'll play all game when we're needing. Having said that, if you ruled out all with less than 5 games on the list, it would be a pretty good indicator.
So although I agree that teams will sometimes bench a champion late in a game once it's in the bag, I think this is a very small effect overall... you're talking about maybe 10% TOG at most, which is barely going to register overall. Also, this analysis isn't likely to tell you much about champion players that you don't already know anyway. It was much-reported in 2012 how the Suns played better without Ablett, for example: this is a curious stat, but I don't think anyone takes it as proof that Ablett is a liability.
