Actually it could be a retirement, I think the place where they're having it is where they've announced it before

Other well kept secrets at Sydney include Jetta is really fast and we're signing Tippett.

Seriously though this is the sort of news us supporters want to see. We've never had a lot of trouble keeping our best players in the past and it means less drama about contracts during the season.

Still a few more guns to sign, though.

Kennedy, Jetta, Hanners, Mumford. They're the 4 listed in the Tele as out of contract. You'd reckon there's a good chance we could lose one of them.

Hmm I don't think so, they all seem fairly committed to the Swans. Only one possibly in a couple of years I would think would be Mummy back to the Cats, but our ruck stocks are pretty bare when Pyke retires so we might find a way to hold onto him.

I assume what they will do is heavily back end those 4 players' contracts so that they will receive healthy chunks of the money when well-paid players like Goodes, Jude and O'Keefe retire in a few years time.

Gary Ablett Jnr seemed fairly committed to Geelong.

I keep thinking back to what bedford posted about Tom Mitchell pulling the pin, and the longer he goes without coming anywhere near a game the more concerning it gets.

At first when I read that those 4 were coming off contract, with our track record of keeping the players we want to keep and those ageing stars coming off the books sooner rather than later, I thought we'd be OK. But the evolving system of free agency is going to make it very difficult. Not impossible, but difficult to retain everyone we want without being given noticeable hometown discounts by our players.

You'd have to think guys like Jetta and Kennedy will attract big offers from rival clubs if they don't re-sign soon. Mumford's run of injuries may put off some clubs but he and Hannebery would surely get tempting offers as well.

I think they timed it to take advantage of the rugby league turmoil with the Sharks, but in any event, great news for Jack! A good choice.
