Any interest? Might be an option if there's a deal done that prises pick 10 away from GWS. Would not think of trading away pick 3 for him by the way.

He's shown himself to be pretty petulant & selfish this season but at his best is a lightning fast, ball winner who kicks goals (& misses a few as well!).

WHAT is Greater Western Sydney going to do with pick one at the NAB AFL Draft?

It is the question which has dominated headlines over the past month, headlines which might otherwise have been about the club's winless season.

Tom Boyd is a 199cm/102kg marking forward who is the standout player of this year's draft pool. He is strong and physically ready, has excellent foot skills, and is a dedicated teenager intent on making the most of his chance.

But if the Giants don't need another tall forward there are other draft prospects who will take their eye.

South Australian Matt Scharenberg can play in the midfield, across half-back and even up forward and is rated by many recruiters in the top three players of the draft.

The Giants might look at Jack Billings, who is a half-forward who marks above his head and kicks goals. Billings has been an under-18 All Australian the last two years.

Skilled midfielders James Aish and Josh Kelly are also in the equation if the club wants to add class to its midfield.

However, using the pick at the draft is just one choice. AFL.com.au gauged the thoughts of industry sources to compile six options available to the Giants.

His best is too little seen and the cost would be too great. He's done his best work on the half back flank and regardless of pace that's the last kind of player we need

I wouldn't be surprised if GWS selected Sharenberg if a deal for pick 1 falls through. I see him as the only player to challenge for pick 1 given his past two years at TAC level and the versatility he offers. I kind of hope we get him! I believe he could be turned into any type of player and that will largely depend on the needs of the team that selects him. We need mids, no problems we develop him as one.

I would think the following strategy is recommended:

- Acquire Mitch Brown through free agency (if possible) or trading of a draft pick somewhere between 30-50
- Enquire about Jonathan Patton and what would it take to get him (something like a player and a pick 15-25 range but a lower pick coming back would be reasonable)
- Load up with other draft picks on midfielders, with perhaps one project tall defender
- Try to keep our top five pick (keep unless we get a deal too good to refuse)
- Avoid acquiring small forwards and medium running defenders (as we have surplus of these)
- Retire Blake & Kosi and one of Milne/Schneider, keep Hayes for one more year
- Re-sign Farren Ray and Clinton Jones
- Delist Trent Dennis-Lane, Tom Ledger (not about to get a game), Terry Milera and perhaps make one more tough call on a youngster from 2011 draft (Lever perhaps)

If we want to persist with Lever ( depends on the club and the targets they set for him internally ), I'd be shuffling him to the Rookie list. Its not like we'll be playing him next season.
Tom Ledger is perplexing. He has demonstrated that he can find the ball at AFL level. That's something most of the population cant do.

Agree, but Scharenburg is South Australian, so a lower level than TAC Cup for him. He is definitely a player GWS could use and I think he is more likely to be the number 1 pick than Aish even though Aish is the better player. Unique and Goddard-like. Don't get too many players like that.

Yep agree, he is useless IMO and fumbles so many times. Wouldn't be able to hold the #1 position in our back line i don't think. Unless we some how get Mitch and Nathan which is unlikely.

Don't think he did, Lenny got subbed off against GWS for Seb Ross but 100% sure Ledge started against Carlton and got subbed off for Newnes at HT.

Sorry, I meant under 18 champs not TAC. Agree with the Goddard comparison. I reckon you could compare Sharenberg to a number of players, not discounting Pavlich. I wouldn't be overly surprised if Aish slides out of the top 3. Even know he also went back to back AA his output was below many of the other selections. His hype from last year and obvious talent will ensure he's picked high though. Apparently Melbourne are very keen on Kelly so if he goes 2 then that will really shake up the top 3. If I was going to rank the top 5 in order I'd go Boyd, Sharenberg, Aish, Billings and then Kelly. That's without considering needs of the team or what I expect to happen on draft day.

The more I look at it the more I think we should forget about pick 1 and try and work out a trade for GWS pick 10. If we ended up with picks 3, 10, 22 we would be in a fantastic position to set our midfield up for the next 10 years.

Agreed, we managed to make Zac Dawson look like a superstar FB. While we no longer have the same quality backline. A monster that can free up Gwilt, Dempster and Roberton and potentially allow Stanley to play elsewhere is worth their weight. Even if he's not particularly that good.

I just want to see us recruit someone. Dawson left a hole when he left, why we haven't recruited even a stop-gap option in the past two pre-seasons baffles me.

Fair comment, its merely a "potential"
In my opinion its very rare for players who have come through the system from juniors, but who can't get the contested ball or don't have the skills, to get those traits at AFL level. ( Though the opposite is common ).
But if you don't have a tank you run along beach road every day and you can get the tank.

Absolutely. No matter how terrible Joel Tippet would have been this year (given that whole pesky "best SANFL KPD" thing, I'd suggest he would have been not so terrible), you know what he's better than?

Next game we are playing Port, and they'll have 2 200cmish tall forwards, and another at 194ish.

Stanley will probably man up on one, and be crap because he's a poor defender.
Simpkin/Roberton will probably man up on one, and be crap because they are too short.
Gwilt will probably man up on the 194cm and be crap because he's too short.
We will have no run out of the backline, because our best rebounder's are manned up on tall bastards.

Now add a 197cm defender to the mix.
We can play with the same structure as above, using Stanley as a ruck/Fwd, and hopefully the defender does a better job than Stanley, or if we're still struggling, we drop Stanley back as well, which allows us to double team someone and may free up Gwilt or Roberton.

I wonder if it would be worth the experiment of Lee in the backline. I think he has played back during his career.

I imagine we choose best available and I personally rate, and expect recruiters to rate Sharenberg higher than Kelly (except maybe Melbourne who almost selected him ahead of Hogan in last years mini-draft). Even know Kelly is a midfielder he's very much an outside mid and has dominated under 18 footy due to his elite endurance and ability to find space. I don't believe he'll have that same advantage at AFL level and I'm yet to see anything to suggest he's a certainty of developing an inside game. I suspect he could be that 'flop' in the draft. The Tambling. That's only my suspicion based off the limited amount of him I've seen compared to AFL recruiters. In his favour I've heard he has a fantastic attitude and great work ethic so perhaps he has the mentality to overcome these flaws. I still see him as a high risk pick though.

On Sharenberg, he has many elite qualities. He doesn't have the elite endurance however it's still at a high level just not at the level of Aish or Kelly. But what he does have is an elite 1 v 1 game especially in the air. He's very good below his knees, very agile for his size (better than Goddard) and most importantly he has an elite footy brain. He reads the play and puts himself in good positions in a Sam Fisher / BJ kind of way. I'm very confident that he plays in multiple positions not only in the back line. I'd put Sharenberg in the low risk category and with a higher ceiling than Kelly.
