Would we want Brent Staker? a good player on his day but could see him just being another Brad Fisher and keeping a young bloke out. Thoughts?

Very much dependent on what we'd have to give Brisbane to bring him across.

Certainly wouldn't want him at a high price but if he came cheap he'd be a smart acquisition.

Only interested in a trade for Staker if we also get Karnezis. Not sure we have the goods to send to Brisbane to get a deal done.

Want Patton. Would propose Betts to Adelaide (FA - recieve first round compo pick). Dont take Daisy (which would dilue the compo). Warnock or Hammer and the first round pick to GWS. Possibly get back a third rounder that they wont use anyway.

Would let Lucas and Ellard go back West if we could get a good trade done.

I think we'd all take that in a heartbeat. Just the other side of the equation that won't be so keen.

Question for me (may have already been mentioned) is who replaces Scotland when he retires? I just feel like we don't have an immediate replacement for him. You would thing Duigan could probably go back there but Scotland is just so hard to replace. Tough, quick, hard running and excellent foot skills..

I reckon we've relied less and less on Scotland this year, to be honest, with Walker and Simpson playing such strong rebounding roles. He's been a fantastic servant, Scotland, but I think the team will roll on OK without him.

If we were to put something together for Patton it would and should cost us our first (and some given our first is ballooning out into double digits). Patton and Thomas wouldn't be such a bad off season.

Karnezis has disappointment written all over him for mine. Is Staker used mostly as a third tall these days??? Mick does love a swingman...

Very true. Does Walker push up the field a bit more though when Scotland goes? See a lot of him taking the hand pass at the back of a pack in the defensive goal square and running the ball out. Don't know why Yarran isn't still playing back, but Mick has his reasons I guess.

As Faz 2000 said, we don't rely on Scotland as much now as we have in the past, so I don't believe his departure will hurt us as much as it may have in previous years.

Having said that, I'd like to see us go after Docherty if he does want to return home to Victoria. Good young footballer who does resemble a younger Scotland. Would be a good addition to the squad.

Thing I love about Scotland is his toughness. Outside players who just want the cheap possies coming off half back are so easy to find these days, hard to find a running half back with the courage and toughness that Scotland has. It will be sad to see him go when he does retire but I'm sure Mick knows that it's coming and has a plan in place. My original post on it was not so much saying that we'll fall apart when he goes, but more a question of who can play a similar role with the qualities that Scotland has. I did like your comparison of Docherty to Scotland.

Wouldn't know Docherty if I tripped over him. Is his disposal A1?

I know we're heavily linked to Thomas but a lot can and will play out, until he does indeed settle on a home.

I've forgotten so may someone enlighten me here.

Examples:

a. If Carltons offer is matched by Collingwood, does that take away the ability for Thomas to make a choice?

b. If a third party comes over the top with a better offer, can Thomas just ignore it opting to play for lesser money at Carlton?

Medical results aside - our offer to Thomas is 2.5 million over 4 years.

($625,000 per season)

Happy with that.
Do you know when he's having his medical C4?

a) Collingwood have the right to match and they still "own" Thomas. Thomas could always refuse to sign anything, but that'd be a giant clusterfruit.

b) My understanding is the player has to sign (essentially) the other deal. If Thomas chooses a contract at Carlton, Collingwood have the right to match. No other 3rd party has any right other than to offer Thomas things. Eg. GWS might offer him millions, doesn't mean anything.

He's having a medical at the Westpac Centre on Monday.... but the papers have reported that on Thursday he'll be having one with us.

He's said to be having medicals with Carlton, Hawthorn and Gold Coast.
