NRL Finals Week 1

Is there a reason the South Sydney game only pulled a crowd of 21k? Aren't they the biggest team in the NRL?

Roosters/Manly: don't like either of therm. Suppose of the two I'd prefer the Roosters.

Third year in a row the refs have robbed the Cowboys from victory! A 7 tackle try! Never heard that before. Really dissapointed.

Yeah, that's so tough on the Cowboys.

Have to say the defence from the Roosters is awesome.

21k for a 2 v 3 final on a friday night and 32k for a double header of finals on a saturday? How are these games not getting better crowds? Do RL fans not want to go to finals in Sydney?

Who's alias is Matchu?

Anyway, I just found out the score and I'm filthy at myself for missing the game. With sports like Leagu, Union and American footy, I love hard, defensive slogs. They're always the best type of games for those sports.

edit: Port Adelaide? Stewies Power?

No alias mate, just curious as to why people don't want to go to finals games. It can't be a Sydney thing because there is probably around 40k at ANZ right now for the Swans game. Do you have an explanation for the poor crowds? I know in the past the NRL has pulled better crowds than that.

It's kind of strange. A week earlier just under 60k fronted up for the game v Roosters, then a week later a very ordinary crowd v the Storm. Not good.

37k for a do or die game at ANZ. Not much to crow about either.

Both refs should be severely reprimanded. That's diabolical.

Are you sure it was 37k? I have heard conflicting reports of 37k and 32k. The Swans pulled 37,980 tonight. Do you think that could have affected the crowd at the SFS?

After last years match, both Bill Harrigan and Stuart Raper lost their jobs. Before the game yesterday, Jonathon Thurston said that he wanted the Cowboys to be given a fair go this year but then had a bit of a laugh. If only he knew what would happen. Déjà Vue! He also said, " I hope our season isn't ended by some controversial desicions."

I was talking about the Swans crowd.

Anyway, I see on the main board you've turned this into a AFL v NRL thing which probably explains your presence in this thread.

Who's seen the massive petition to get the Cowboys back into the finals? By 11am it already had 6000 signatures! The NRL Officials even said they were embarrassed by the incident but haven't yet put the Cowboys back in the Finals. Terrible end to Matt Bowen's career.

Storm and Cowboys have every right to be ****ed off

Incredible defense by Roosters and Manly...there will be some sore boys

Hope Souths make the GF

Think the Roosters will be hard to beat

At least the Storm get another chance! Cowboys don't. I think the Storms reign over the competition is over this season. Roosters have great defence while the Rabbitohs have great attacking forwards. The Sea Eagles will be hard to predict as they are unpredictable and inconsistent. They can beat any team but can also lose games they shouldn't (Panthers). The Cowboys controversy will plague the rest of the Finals.

This thread is one of the biggest for postings. So much to talk about.

Struggling to see how the refereeing was so bad- Melbourne won the penalty count or were close, might have been 7-6 either way. The first no-try as explained had to be given. The second one was given a try on field, but there was a clear taking out of Meritt. Jeez I hate Souths and I hope every other side wins but them...BUT the referees did pretty well.

You're kidding yourself if you think the referees decided the result of the game.

In the 1st try I think you will find its the touch judge who tells Hayne no try, if he thinks the defender got his arms under, the ref isn't going to argue.

As for the 2nd try, Chambers had no eyes for the ball as he charged into merrett. So much the same as Sisa's incident it was a penalty albe
it a ( very ) soft one.

Regarding the Slater no try. No, no, no no and no again. I guess you guys didn't watch it? There was no taking out of Meritt. At all. Ever. Chambers attempted to catch the ball. In fact, a souths player backed into HIM while leaping up on the way through. Not deliberate in any shape and form. Not even close. Perhaps a penalty should've been given to Storm for a Souths player taking out a Storm player?

To say that he did it deliberate is pure b.s and would have to be an extreme biased view. Nothing more. Nothing less.

So what? Now a player attempting to catch the ball can NEVER make ANY contact with an opposition player while contesting the ball? Might as well tell the atacking players to stand back 10 metres while the defending team calmly without pressure can catch the ball un-contested.

Along with the try scored on the 7th tackle, some of the most appalling refereeing performances in some time. What Henry and JT are saying isn't too far off the mark. Are the NRL feeling THAT threatened by the Swans great season they want to counter it with an all Sydney GF?

Dear oh dear.

And there's no comparison between the Storm and the Cowboys. The first Storm 'try', as has been explained here by several posters, was rightly not given under the laws as they stand. The second was certainly a bit harsh, but certainly falls into the 'sometimes's they're given, sometimes, they're not' category. In other words, it's a judgment call by the refs/video ref. That is altogether different from a 7 tackle try.
