Operation No boring semantic discussions about what "market value" means.

Failed :(

Do you want "Operation Let's Trade for a Free Agent" instead? :P

Did Kerr err by letting five homesick lads come out of contract all at once?

Underrated post. A very interesting question (which I have no idea how to answer :)).

I would have thought that Kerr would have tried to get some of them to sign contract extensions last year (since Polec and Karnezis both signed one year extensions previously), but they probably weren't interested. Hard to know without more information.

Yeah, it's a bit of a circular argument really. Kerr allowing homesick players to be out of contract could simply be a result of homesick players refusing to sign contracts.

It's ok. It's long since become obvious that I'm using the actual definition, you're using some other definition that you're happy with, and you don't appreciate the explanation that there is a proper definition. Sorted. :thumbsu:

If you wish to be captain definition man on a footy forum then good on you champ. The next thing you should explain to us is "context" and "intuition" :thumbsu:

Who knows what talks took place between Kerr and the players managers. Maybe talks were initiated and their managers said my client would like to run out their current contract and make a decision then.

Players that get a taste of senior footy in their first year or players that have a huge amount of talent should be signed up to contract extensions by the end of their first year. Talks should be initiated with their Managers half way through that season. At that time they're excited to be in an AFL environment, training/playing side by side with players they've looked up to etc. Strike when the iron is hot so to speak.

Just posing the question but if you knew they wanted to go then you should trade them out while you still have some bargaining chips. At the minute we have five high draft picks that could all potentially walk for nix and that should be a concern for every supporter.

Can you imagine the outcry if we'd have traded those 5 last year? Some of them were first year players - we'd be the laughing stock of the comp if we traded out first year players who refused to sign a contract extension.

Well it's hard to know at what point it became obvious that the homesickness was unmanageable rather than just something that could be overcome. It's hard to criticise too much without knowing.

If we traded any player the second they showed signs of being homesick, Chris Johnson, Simon Black and Luke Power wouldn't have been here beyond their initial contracts.

I imagine our player retention challenge would get even worse in the future if we established a precedent along the lines of "don't worry if you get drafted by Brisbane, just tell them you are homesick and they'll trade you after your first year".

If we aren't already a development nursery for other clubs, that sort of defeatist approach would certainly make us one once-and-for-all.

Yeah and I am not sure trading Elliot Yeo last year for example would have netted us anything better than what we'd get this year.

And it's generally been an unwritten rule of the club that we try and turn around homesick kids by refusing to trade them under contract. Whether that should be continued in the future...

I agree, but both Polec and Karnezis signed exactly the extension you're talking about.

You know, you could be the bigger person and just let it go.....

I could be. But I started enjoying myself once it became apparent that reality didn't matter. :thumbsu:

Can't blame him, obviously still struggling with GWS losing Buddy ;)

we should only let players sign 4 year deals if they get a new contract early...the 3 year deal is just to get them off base salary from a players point of view. So essentially we rewarded Karnezis and Polec only for them to take the money and run
