agree best of luck to him... Is it a bit of Chris Daw's about it though? Leave for more opportunities instead of working really hard to push himself into the starting 22? He will play majority of games with saints bc they are lacking KPD

Grima's short and long term durabiltiy are massive risks, as a supporter I'd have hoped Luke would back himself to be the heir apparent or even demand Grima's spot through performance.

He's opted for a different path which is his perogative.

"Apparently" in order to agree to FA, Pelican Shit is demanding we agree to trade Del for a 4th rounder. We're saying pick 22 compo is enough for Dal so it's a 3rd rounder for Del or we'll sell him to Brissie.

FFS - just trade for a 4th rounder then.

I see no comparison to Daws at all. He played 62 games in his last 3 years at Collingwood with 23 in his last year. He was told he was not going to be getting as many opportunites in the following year so he got out to Melbourne. Keys has played 26 in his career and signed on for one year at the end of last year on the premise that more opportunity would be coming his way. He proceed to play 5 games, Hansen has moved back and his bro is up his clacker (in a non-Atkins kind of way).

He needs to play AFL footy next year or thats it for him I reckon.

Yeah, I honestly don't think Luke was that far away from getting games for us. Yes, he is behind the Thompson/Grima/Hansen trio, but with our only other key back option being his brother, who is a very different player, more in the Hansen mould, I would expect Luke to be the next bloke into the side if any of Grima or Thompson got injured. Given Grima's age and injury history, that would happen at least 6-10 times in 2014 IMO, which could be Grima's last year or second last at best. And even on form, if Luke was in good form, he may well have cracked a game. So whilst it was a nice interview with his love for the club and all, I am still not entirely sure he's making a right call.

Edit: I suppose there is Spud Firrito as well, who got to play on Buddy late in the year, but it was in Luke's hands to prove to the coaches that he is better suited to play on bigger bodies than ageing Spud.

Agree on the concerns over Grima's durability, and although I wish him well at his new club, Luke was never going to be in a position to take Grima's spot through any other avenue excpept for injury.

Grima's capabilities as an AFL footballer are significantly greater than Luke's, to the point that I rate him as important to our defence as Mr AA himself (and as an added bonus he also now has the ability to drift forward and kick goals!).

If St Kilda eventually agrees, then yes. But if we missed out on our key off season target, because of Delaney's price, I would be furious. Delaney is a VFL standard player, and whether he delivers us pick 37 or pick 55 or even pick 73, doesn't make a great deal of difference to me, as long as we keep pick 26!
I think getting NDS for nothing is a key and if we can achieve that, it's a major win from my point of view.

Of course St Kilda won't give up pick 37 for Delaney, given he's uncontracted, and they have pick 3 in the PSD. I doubt the delay would be over this issue anyway, to be honest. If it was, we'd agree to release Delaney for nothing, and get Nick for nothing.

Luke might be a predominantly VFL player for us but he's entering his prime years now with a few seasons of experience under his belt. He provides a ready to go option in a difficult to fill position for most sides. We didn't offer him a 'really good offer' (his words) for no reason.

Therefore I support the club seeking to get the best return for him since he's opted to leave.

Dal Santo is not a missing piece to our puzzle nor is he a long term player. So if us playing hard but fair on Luke compromises NDS so be it.

Delaney is at a point where another season spent mostly in the VFL will do his career irreparable damage. He has to get out now for the sake of his own longevity. Just look at Greenwood; one season too many in the VFL. I reckon he would have had more interest if he was available last year.

I'd rather keep Delaney but I can't blame him for moving on.

Agree re capabilities but as you've agreed on Grima has shown himself to be physically brittle (and isn't exactly rumoured to lead a high performance lifestyle).

So you'd think his retirrment age will not exceed the average and a replacement will be needed sooner rather than later.

Cam Delaney?

Let's not forget the supposed shallow depth of this draft, and the number of picks we'd be likely to use. Are we going to use more than 3 picks this year?
I doubt it. Maybe Pykie or someone in the know can confirm that. If our picks are 26, 43 and 61 (or similar) we can try and upgrade pick 61 to about 50 or 45 by doing something in this trade period with LA or possible one or two others. But I wouldn't have thought it would be such a huge issue for us, as any pick outside 30 is likely to be equally speculative, and we won't be using too many of those if any. NDS on the other hand may help us get to top 4 or even higher over the next 2-3 years. I would have thought that's more important than trying to land pick 55. Especially given the PSD option is real, and we need to be mindful of that. Is any other club offering picks better than 50 for Delaney? I'd like to know if they are.

I'm led to believe that 2 other clubs have offered a 3rd rounder for Del so he won't be going into the PSD. His "love" of NMFC will see him agree to go to a club other than the Aints if needed. We have told Aints that we see Dal and Del as 2 separate transactions. I'm happy we're playing hard ball and I'd be surprised and disappointed if we relent.

Different type but regardless would want more than 1 spare (no pun int) KPD on the list.

Always thought that Grima and Spare Keys are the same type of rangy, athletic tall defender.

Interesting, assuming your "inside" is correct. St Kilda's third rounder is a fairly early pick of course, compared to other clubs. They would definitely baulk at that. Their 4th rounder on the other hand would be in the early 50s, I think. What are the other clubs who are offering the 3rd rounder? Brisbane and who?

Grima has played on both Riewoldts in the past. He could play as a genuine FB if needed, although he isn't best suited to that role. Cam is more of a Hansen/Firrito/McMahon type IMO, despite his height. Similar to Hansen in that regard, who is 197cm, but doesn't play that tall, as a defender.

I'd guess Carlton.

A poor performing MELBOURNE based club perhaps.

Delaney, Hansen, Thompson, Curran, Tippett possibly, we'll be fine.

Curran cannot be included in any discussions of depth until he is verified as fit for AFL (injury wise).

Kurt Tippett is coming to us because the Swans cap squeeze? Cool!

*I get you're speculating on picking up Joel Tippett
