I don't hate Collingwood

Let's face it - ultimately in sport "hating" anyone is a very relative concept and pretty much has to be largely irrational.

In other words, those of you who don't hate Collingwood are missing the point of sport (yay! my team is arbitrarily better than yours! ...but seriously, it is).

If there are teams who deserve to be hated for real life reasons, they are probably those who have engaged in salary cap rorting, drug cheating, tanking, or dubious poaching of players. So basically Melbourne, West Coast, Hawthorn, Essendon, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, Sydney, Carlton, Hawthorn.

- Extra Money in the Salary Cap
- AFL Backing them to win because they know if they are not winning then the Fans and Crowds go down

So Collingwood crowds didn't drop in their lean years?
How big was the Collingwood v Essendon crowd the other week compared to when both are going well

Happens with every club when their fortunes are down

Tell me how big the TV rights deal would have been without Sydney

Nice try at selective argument

Most people love to share the same opinions, people also like to hate on things its pretty normal for most supporters to hate Collingwood because everyone loves to hate them so people follow like sheep.. People hate them ever though they hardly watch/follow football.

Ask anyone why they hate them you'll just get "I just do".

I like Collingwood. They are probably the team I least hate.

North Melbourne annoy me - they are nothing but a small club like us but their supporters go around much like Essendon supporters thinking they are owed something.

Melbourne- similar reasons to North Melbourne

Essendon & Carlton- well that's obvious.

Seriously?

They consistently get an extremely favourable draw both in terms of the amount of travel, the quality of their interstate opponents and the number of "away" games they play on their home ground. Basically like if the interstate teams or Geelong got 18ish games at their home grounds.

Yes, there are reasons including requests from other clubs, but ultimately it's the AFL's call - if the AFL was fair dinkum they'd do a random draw for all clubs including the Pies.
You get that for every plane trip interstate teams get, they get to play an opponent who has just flown to them, right? Victorian clubs fly interstate less, but the flipside is that all of their games against Victorian opposition confer no real home ground advantage.
You say we get too many away games at the MCG, and then use the argument that Vic teams get no home ground advantage from playing away games at their home ground. Really?

You try and rebut his point that the AFL keep Sydney successful to maximise the rights deal...by pointing out how the rights deal would be much smaller without Sydney :drunk:

tv rights is the purpose of sydney, they are a commercial product, this is what makes them a francise.

collingwood and the vast majority of the other teams are clubs, collective groups of supporters with a common sporting goal.

You know .. it's been 6 years, and you've won 2 flags in the meantime. Don't you think it's time to let go?

This just goes to show people believe this tripe that is spewed out without actually checking it for themselves.

This year Collingwood plays 5 interstate games. Comparing this to other Victorian sides:
Carlton plays 5
Essendon plays 5
Geelong plays 6
Hawthorn plays 5
Melbourne plays 6 - Two of these are sold home games in NT so it's really only 4
North plays 6 - One of these is in Canberra vs GWS which isn't their proper home ground
Richmond plays 6
St Kilda plays 5
Bulldogs play 5 - One of these is sold to Cairns and another is in Canberra vs GWS

So this part of it is just rubbish.

As far as the "quality of interstate opponents" goes, we've played Sydney in Sydney for 12 straight years now, and in that time they've been one of the most successful sides and only missed the finals once.

It's nothing like interstate sides playing 18 games at their home ground. Each time they play at home (except against the other team from the state), they have a distinct home state advantage. Of our 14 games at the G, 10 of them are against other Victorian sides - i.e. completely neutral. We play 5 interstate sides at home and 5 away.

But hey, let's not let the facts get in the way of the "Collingwood don't travel" perception. :thumbsu:

I don't think I've really liked Carlton at all since maybe the late 90s, and back then I was ambivalent. Most of the other clubs go through periods where you like them, don't mind them and don't like them. Carlton for me are the most enduring team I despise, win or lose. Just something about them, I see nothing worth liking.

Early on, I grew up with Carlton as one of the more popular clubs, think my Mum briefly had a soft spot for them as her 2nd team.

I don't even hate eddie. He does a good job promoting his club and whilst he says some really stupid things (the goodes stuff, 'we have too many spuds' etc) he doesn't bother me that much. Same with collingwood, I'd ****ing love it if we beat them but I don't 'hate' them. Essendon is and always has been the only 'hate' club for me.

Another AFL survey is completed with confirmation once again that there are a whole lot of people that still dislike Collingwood, but why? They have not been particularly good in the last 50 years, they have not rorted the system, Most of the players I've known (30 years) have been likeable hardworking types, and there has been some serious urban gentrification amongst their supporter group. I think the Collingwood that we are all supposed to hate vanished sometime in the early 90s. I understand, as a result of the ancient rivalry, how Carlton and Essendon fans would hate them, but the rest of us?

I don't hate Collingwood. I probably did 25 years ago, but these days if it has no bearing on my team's position, I don't care if they win or lose.

Surprised Sydney are not top 3 with pies & essendon.

Interested in hearing caitsith01's response to this.

Also worth adding that the AFL fixture us to play 2 home games per year at Eithad with at least 1 against a home tenant of the ground.

Still trying to figure out how that one falls into the "Collingwood get a dream run" category.

I've always found this mentality pretty dumb TBH.

Not dumb at all. If you look at the hate list, all the most hated teams are the big successful teams, and all the least hated teams are the struggling teams. It's human nature to be jealous of other people's success and will find any excuse to try and cut them down. Everyone gangs up on Collingwood only because we are the biggest and the most famous club in Australia. What other club has had a movie made about them?
