Availability and cost (in trade terms, nothing) are the primary drivers IMO. I think those factors would mean they'd be willing to wear a year of having too many options.

Maybe.
Of course, the other possibility, which I mentioned earlier, is scarcely to be contemplated; they may want him as CHF, because they don't think Vardy is going to get up. Although it's hard to believe that sort of news would not have leaked.

Couldn't rule that one out but hopefully the more obvious explanation is it.

I wouldn't quite call it seamless; Egan's last game was in late 2007, Harley's in 2009, and Lonergan had some terrifying moments in both 2009 and 2010. It wasn't like he settled in immediately to being a key defender. I'm far from convinced the lesser defenders are capable of shutting down top 4 opposition in finals.

I'd argue the only one of those three that has been really "backed in" has been Kersten - he's had 8 straight games. Brown had 3 before being injured, and Walker hasn't had more than 3 this season either.

I got to agree,...only one who's has had a fairdinkum chance, Kersten. The other two in their short time actually faired better.
Not that Kersten won't work, just not as a CHF,...... not at 190cm he won't.

Not too stressed about whether or not we get Frawley though I think we're pretty much covered in defense and would prefer the money was spent elsewhere, maybe midfield, CHF..?

Re: the Suns list, imo any on the uncontracted list this year are not an improvement on any we already have and of the players on that list for next year, well.. only 1 I'd like to have & that isn't gonna happen..

Seriously though, there are a couple of others (McKenzie, Lonergan) but don't see the Suns letting them get away *shrugs*

Kolo is a cm taller than Frawley and will probably be bigger in 2 yrs. He'll be a KPD.

Size isn't everything, it's style of play. If you looked at Jack Watts' dimensions you wouldn't pick him as the player he is, Jared Brennan was a 195cm midfielder, Blicavs is a 198cm wingman, Mackie a 192cm running defender,Josh Gibson a 188cm KPD. I wouldn't be so quick to call him a KPD, he's a quiet thin (obviously he's 18/19 though), and iirc played more of a rebounding role for Tassie in the National Championships with his brother. I don't confess to have seen much of him as a junior but I thought the criticism of him was the fact the he mightn't grow into that big defender capable of defending the gorillas.

he's bigger than that, 191 and closing in on 100kg's. Podsiadly was 193 & 100 and regarded a true CHF and/or key position forward.

Sorry Bobby! 1cm,...... no seriously Footywire got him at 190cm, maybe we complain? Was checking the kid Nick Bourke, 191cm, but he has grown.

In other words there's no proof at all, it's just speculation to make people feel good. Glad that was cleared up.

I.e. "My cousin's gardener knows someone who is best mates with someone who lives next door to a doctor who works at a certain club and his son's girlfriend's ex's brother's neighbour knows someone who thinks that this player might be looking to move".

No offence, but unless there's a statement from a player or club it's pure fantasy.
All on here is pure fantasy.

Thin? Are we talking about the same guy?

That's a damn solid frame for a just 19yo. Regarding playing style, his style is much more a stopper/spoiling defender in the VFL, often taking the No. 1 key forward. He doesn't really have that strong rebounding/running game at this stage, was something he acknowledged he needed to improve not long back.

Yeah, this was my impression too.

He looks a bit bigger than the last time I saw him then. I stand corrected! As I said I haven't seen much VFL this season but was going on what I'd heard late last year.

This is all good news though, seeing as we have a glaring need for a KPD prospect!

First up, I can understand people arguing against Frawley on the grounds of ability (personally, I think he can play but everyone sees things differently and it is a legitimate debate to have).

What I don't understand is the opposition to bringing him in because he'll create a logjam or because we already have senior players in his position. That seems to be pretty short-term thinking.

We traded for Caddy (meaning we gave up something) despite having Joel Corey on the list (some similarities to a Frawley-Lonergan situation if it came to pass).

Caddy's arrival also put pressure on younger players like Horlin-Smith and Schroder.

Rivers created competition when he arrived as he put the squeeze on Brown who was starting to be trialled down back as a third tall.

Lonergan's contract ends in 2015. I doubt anyone on here thinks he'll go on after that.

Enright, if he does go around, would also likely finish at the end of the 2015 season.

Rivers may also pull the pin at the end of 2015.

For a start that is a lot of experience walking out the door from the back half.

The fact two of them are tall defenders (Frawley's natural position) should also raise some concerns considering Kolodjashnij (a first year player) is the only real tall defender in reserve at the moment. Brown was tried there and then moved back forward (& might not even be with us beyond this year), Blicavs has done a job previously but we'd probably prefer him playing second ruck/midfield.

Drafting a key tall means waiting around 3-4 years for his development.

If people are worried about a highly paid player sitting in the VFL we might back end Frawley's contract and use the money that'll materialise when Enright, Lonergan and Rivers to finish up.

Besides, is competition for spots such a bad thing?

Having Frawley also enables rotatations next year for guys like Lonergan, Rivers and, to a lesser extent, Taylor.

Frawley could be thrown forward or release Taylor forward if the need arises.

The big pluses though; any logjam is likely to only be for one season and we don't give up anything for him other than finding the money and the list spot.

We must have the money otherwise why would the Leadership Team be asked for their opinion. I don't think we'd overpay him compared to the other players on our list (which might end up counting us out).

Also, if the Leadership Team have been asked their opinion, the club must feel he's a fit.

Unrestricted free agents of Frawley's age don't currently appear as a general rule (it may change if the FA rules are adjusted in the future) meaning he'll have 5-7 years to pay the club back.

I'm happy for the club to pursue him for the right price.

Spot on The Pivotonian.

I also think it's unrealistic to hope for a seamless transition between players going out the door and those coming in. Having one too many options on the list seems to me to be a better problem to have than having one too few.

Drafting a prime tall defender may not mean waiting 3-4yrs if a solid lad is chosen high in the draft.

Last year we passed on Daniel McStay and Gardiner both have played senior footy for Brisbane already, first season boys!

This year there's a couple that will go high and may slide to us, can we afford to overlook a quality key defender a year further down the track, I don't think so.

If we don't land frawley, our first draft selection must be used on one of lever, Goddard or marchbank (assuming durdin is gone). Simple as that.

Brisbane lost a bunch of blokes last draft and are gonna finish 15th this year boys!

That's why they are playing...

I don't know why people think Brown will be gone end of season. As it stands I can't see how we could possibly afford to lose him.
:drunk: He's a spud. It's that simple. Been at the club for god knows how many years. Not cut out for it. That simple. List clogger.

your probably right. I remember when Lonergan and Mackie were the whipping boys
They showed more in a smaller period of time than Brown has.

What?....And you imagine they only have teenagers?.....Go have a look what they did to Collingwood last week and think again, 75point victory.
How much did we beat Collingwood by?
So do you still think these kids should be playing little League? Wish we had one.
