How about making it so that the top 6 sides cannot be involved in free agency. Sure they can TRADE for a free agent but cannot get one for free.

I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to this stuff, but could the AFL just give a lower cap space to top teams that gradually increase according to the position clubs finish on the ladder? They have to do something to help the lower clubs because it isn't working at the moment.
Wouldn't really work. Plus sides shouldn't be punished for being good.

I like it personally. Clubs just need to get better at it.

How are we going to get better at it?

I'm with Mick
“Why should we at Carlton and every other club pay a penalty because Melbourne have lost Frawley, why should I be penalised a spot in th draft because Frawley leaves and goes to Geelong or goes to Hawthorn or wherever he goes and Melbourne reaps the benefits of another pick.

Not what I was talking about. I meant clubs attracting players.

Šorry jatz wrong paragraph

“I don’t like free trade ... you just get ripped and plundered and you end up bringing players up only to see them go to other clubs and this is what’s happening,” Malthouse said highlighting James Frawley’s imminent departure from Melbourne.

No thanks.

Why should St Kilda be rewarded for being a terrible club while we punish Hawthorn for being a quality footy club?

Yes i get what you're saying, saints aren 't a really good example

I'm a big Malthouse fan but he didn't seem to mind when he picked up Daisy.

Well of course not thats not where I am coming from, Personally
I'm not sold on free agency, it needs tweeking while I'm at it we are one expansion team too many, diluted the talent & the standards...

I reckon Daisy would have re united with Mick regardless if FA ;)

I think the pick needs to given at a specific area within the draft and not allocated after the current clubs finishing. I believe this to be the fairest.
Free agency needs to be in place for all. Teams like us need to strive to make every free agent want to come to us and not whinge and carry on like Saints fans do about hand-outs and gifts. Make the club better to earn the results.

And, I'm not sure that a compensation pick for the lost free agent will ever help the team lower down the ladder, especially in the short term. If Frawley goes to Hawthorn, almost certainly they will be strengthened and Melbourne weakened next year even if they pick up a great prospect in compensation. And, I don't even think it will be of benefit in the long term either, because when that kid matures and becomes a very good player (like Frawley), the same thing may happen again with that player wanting to play finals in a top team. The lower teams may always be full of great prospects but never be able to rise to the top.

Exhibit 1: Cleveland Cavaliers
They are exibit 2, exhibit 1 was Miami Heat...

Brooklyn tried to do the same but got the mix all wrong.

Lebron opting out and going back to Cleveland would have been like Jezza or Fev coming back to Carlton after making a bucketload of money elsewhere.

It would have given him the shits that getting Daisy meant we got nothing for eddie while Pies got a first rounder. It's another flaw that only we have suffered so far.

Don't see how they can fix FA and I don't like it. Players out of contract can usually get to the club of their choice and that should be fine. Perhaps those who now qualify for FA get some help from the afl in making trades happen more easily, some kind of arbitration system.
