Long term, yes, our first pick is always best available. Like I said before, we have a lot of kids yet to show anywhere near their potential. We'll get Conca's first full preseason into him since he's been on our list and he can easily play that role, Ellis will be increasing his contested work, Vlastuin will increase his tank and can spend more time in the midfield, Miles will actually play the whole year, McDonough gets another year into him. Natural development and experience will fulfil our needs just as much as getting Greenwood would, plus whatever output we get from our first round pick. Basically we won't be forced into paying more than we want for him.IMO you need help on the inside.
Would you pick up a player at #11 that would give you the same sort of impact that Greenwood would?
I'm not sure they would.
We won't only offer our second round pick, that would be silly, but as I said above there's no way we'll pay our first for the exact reason you just mentioned, this time last year you would have got a pack of twisties. If St Kilda or Melbourne want to offer North more than us, simply put we don't care. From all reports he is on the borderline of signing with us and all things being equal he would stay.
If the Richmond deal becomes too good to refuse, he may WANT to go there in favour of North based on that offer and the deal getting done. BUT, North hold all the chips. Well most of them.
If Richmond start stuffing round with offering second round picks for a guy they are willing to give 3 years to at nearly 400k, I have no doubt North will let him walk where he we likely be snapped up by St Kilda or Melbourne and spend the next 5 years contending for a spoon, rather than playing deep finals and maybe a flag.
It would be your first rounder or bust IMO, which, as much as I would hate to see Greenwood go, a very good result for North as we would have gotten a pack of twisties this time last year.
But I think the deck is stacked in the Roos favour to retain him with the deal offered.

Vlastuin we want to be a Hodge typeThe thing is, Greenwood's the type of player they dream of Vlastuin becoming but you can bet they wouldn't consider even putting him on the table.
Vlastuin we want to be a Hodge type
Conca is probably a better comparison, except Conca has played 3 more games than Greenwood but is 3 years younger. At the same age:

Same age doesn't mean anything... some players come out firing, some take time and some fade away... Greenwood was very average in the beginning...Vlastuin we want to be a Hodge type

Assuming he doesn't re-sign, what works better for North? Will pick 20 odd work? No.
Will pick 20 odd and some Richmond spud work? No.
So, if Levi wants Richmond want Levi it will be up to them to come up with an appropriate deal for a player who had a year equivalent to their best and fairest. Otherwise Levi can walk for free to St. Kilda.
Unless of course he re-signs.
Sounds believable from such a respectable long time poster like you....Spoke to one of the players today and he said Levi is gone.
I guess we will see.Assuming he doesn't re-sign, what works better for North?
1. Richmond's second pick
2. St Kilda in the PSD
You have a lot less leverage to us than you're making out

Think what you like.Sounds believable from such a respectable long time poster like you....
As a North fan what would you prefer, a swap of first & second round picks for Greenwood or nothing? That is effectively what it looks like being given our second pick is too low and our first pick is too high. As I said in an earlier post, swapping the picks gives North something rather than nothing and getting a crack at the draft 4 spots higher than you currently are picking can make a big difference to the kid you pick up.Will pick 20 odd work? No.

Vlastuin is also only 20 and as much as I disagree with your assessment of him, I'm telling you his play style is in the Hodge mould, he may not be as good but that's what it is. Regardless, unrelated to this threads discussion. The same age thing means nothing. Greenwood's had his breakout year now.
Vlastuin doesn't have the skills or poise of Hodge. Has the hardness, though, and should find the footy in the midfield (doesn't read the play well enough to impact offensively from the backline). Hey, kinda like Greenwood.
The Conca comparison was to show you the type of player we have that fits the role Greenwood would fill, I'm not saying Greenwood was shit or anything so don't take my words in a way they're not intended. Conca also had a shit year (on top of discipline issues), was well under his expected output, and he has never had a full preseason with us since he has been on our list due to injury, it's frustrating as hell from our perspective so we know there is a lot of room for improvement.Same age doesn't mean anything... some players come out firing, some take time and some fade away... Greenwood was very average in the beginning...
Potentially. Lets see what transpires. As a North fan what would you prefer, a swap of first & second round picks for Greenwood or nothing?
