Are there any players that you would have targeted in particular?
I can run down a list of familiar names but it's all academic now, isn't it?

We should have a list of young WA players (or from elsewhere really) every year and be working our arses off to shake one of them loose.

Marco Paparone signed a new deal with the Lions mid-year. Could we have tapped him up more aggressively?

I'd take that over other clubs trading periods (i.e. Essendon, Geelong, Carlton, Collingwood, WB, NM).

Say what?
Bulldogs, Carlton, Collingwood have all had great trading periods! Geelong managed to get up in the draft order to a pick before us! and who knows how Clark is going to work out, could be a steal for them!

So only 2 good talls in that group. Whilst they have lost leg speed, they haven't exactly become slow immediately.
Mate, I've got no idea who is available in the draft. I haven't looked into it yet.

But we are going for a midfield runner.
We have 21 guys over 190cm !!

Good footballer but from what I've heard he's a bit of a lazy bugger.

Funny everytime i think of a Lazy footballer I think of Gary Ablett before he became a superstar. Not comparing the 2 only that when Lazy footballers put there mind to it you can see massive upside/ improvements.

I quite like Clem Smith and being a Demon supporter I would have seem him more then most. Definately the most talanted of the WA boys this year. Would be thrilled to get him with our 2nd round pick. I think a couple of AFL pre seasons would really help him become something special.

Oh well, since my rumour of the Saints/GWs mega-picks trade didn't go through, all that's left of me is to trawl the Eagles board for posters telling us that Masten's pre-season means he's finally ready to become elite.

House's will be trained down. Bank on it.

Would Paparone have filled a need?

Personally i would ask Paul Connors and Liam Pickering to come in for a chat, give them a list of players we would like, tell them what each player would be worth to us in regards to amount and playing future and let them do the rest.

If they are under contract and we don't wish to ask them to break it at least they know well in advance that we are keen and what is on the table.

I hope we are at least diligent enough to be doing this.

Paparone? How in the world would he fix our midfield issues?

You also have no idea who we've spoken to or targeted. If you hate the Eagles so much why do you support them? you only seem to post negative comments about the team.

He wouldn't. It's a more general example.

That's true. But it's fair to say that, whoever we spoke to or targeted, nothing came off. That was the result.

If you hate the Eagles so much why do you support them? you only seem to post negative comments about the team.
That's pretty juvenile.

The bottom line is that we finished ninth. That, to me, indicates that we need to improve the list. We haven't managed to do that.

Bulldogs have taken a huge gamble. Not something I'd be particularly happy with if I was a supporter of their club. Losing Higgins and Cooney may really set them back (even if there is an argument that these two haven't really been present in the last couple of years).
Carlton lost Waite, Garlett, Robinson and potentially a few others. This will have significant implications on their depth and any injuries will see them exposed. They also traded out pick 7. Whether Jaksch, Whiley and pick 19 are worth it, time will tell.
Collingwood lost Beams and Lumumba and gained back Varcoe, Greenwood, Crisp and pick 5. You could possibly be happy with this but as we don't really have a midfielder of the quality of Beams it is difficult to put the loss of Beams into WC terms.
Geelong lost Christensen and Varcoe and lost out on Frawley. They did manage to gain Clark and a pick upgrade but I wouldn't be happy with their trade period in any capacity.

Really? Based on what?

For mine, when you have one area that is obviously the Achilles heel, there needs to be a proper plan to address it. Instead, it gets to trade week and we don't do anything. Now we say: "We tried. Oh well."

I'm not sure that's good enough. Look at the way successful clubs identify an area that needs to be bolstered and then go and find a player that ticks the right box.

I reckon that's a different criticism than saying we are obviously happy with our list.

It's disappointing we couldn't address any of our midfield need's this trade period. Not even bundling up a player/pick combo to upgrade our second rounder or get a late first. What hurts more, is seeing a decent team like Geelong pull a great swap of picks and now hold a top 10 pick. Of course, 1 spot ahead of us and a chance of impacting our first round position. (The only chance we have to really improve our midfield, since we did nothing)

Not specifically.

I'm just outlining the approach we should be taking i.e. identifying WA kids and getting in their ear early so they don't sign a new deal.
Hey jaeger don't sign a new deal because we really want you to come play with us and pay you a shitload of cash

Well I like it on the Gold Coast, the weathers nice, the surf is good and I'm pretty anonymous. I also get to play with Gary ablett and there's a bunch of us the same age who get on really well together. If we stay as a group we are going to be a real contender for a flag or two. Also the Suns will be paying me a shitload too

Well, perhaps we're not sufficiently motivated to bring some new guys in?

Doesn't have to be O'Meara.

I just want some kind of indication that we're improving the list. I think we need something more dramatic than the three draftees.

I'm not disappointed that we didn't get anybody, I'm more disappointed in the fact there was virtually zero convo about us doing ANYTHING, take Varcoe out because he was never going to leave Victoria, like did anyone ever hear anything? Our list must really be that mediocre

Or perhaps......

Hey Jaeger come back to Perth, within a few years you will be playing infront of 60,000 screaming fans in the countrys newest stadium who will idolize you the way Judd or Cousins was.

You will play for a club who has always been loyal to it's champions, many have gone on to play significant roles within our club, media and community after football.

You will be able to be with your friends and family again, where your roots are.

You will be playing for a club that has one of the most successful histories in the AFL.

YOU are the missing piece Jaegar, with you we will win multiple premierships, you will have the whole team blocking for you. We will protect our number 1 asset........

Doesn't matter which w.a talent we target..

Say whatever they need to hear, just get the damn signature.

Either that or the club is not wikileaks

I would think that has a lot more to do with the media and nothing to do with how active we have been at pursuing players. Face facts, the East doesn't care about the West whatsoever.

Having left Perth for Sydney i'd not be surprised if players like Coniglio said, thanks but not thanks West Coast, i like it here just fine.

On a selfish level i'd be upset, but would certainly understand. Sydney is a pretty great city.

.

Another element of the Boyd / Griffin trade is the Bulldogs assisting with salary cap relief 1 million dollars over 4 yrs for Griffins GWS contract on top of paying Boyd 7 million over 7 yrs .

Would a personal phone call from the Eagles setting out every avenue they pursued over the trade period satisfy your desire to feel like we tried something? If so i'm sure they'll be in touch shortly. The won't like having you upset about your lack of inside knowledge.

Yes, our list is that mediocre, that's why we didn't change anything. Outstanding logic.
