As Above, So Below - FF/Doco style horror about a group of people who sneak into the French catacombs to search for the philosophers stone. Its an interesting premise and the fact they shot in the actual underground catacombs was really interesting. I love the FF/shaky cam style of shooting but this was by far the worst ive seen in terms of making you feel ill. First time ever i've had to look away for a few moments as it was giving me a headache. The first half to 3/4 of this movie is very good and very interesting but the last 25 minutes or so was poor and a real let down. Very similar to The Tunnel but nowhere near as good. 4.5/10

Random BILLY MITCHELL quotes...

“Two hundred and fifty boards. Over many, many hours. Never dying once. Never missing a point. I had all kinds of people: ‘Oh, you can’t do it. Oh, no-one’s ever done that. There’s no way you can do that. Betcha you can’t.’ I say don’t betcha life.”
- on getting a perfect Pac-Man score.

“The all around most seasoned person in the hot sauce chicken wing industry? Yeah, for sure. Me. There’s a production end of it. There’s the preparation. When there’s the sales end of it, there’s not somebody who encompasses all of those areas like me that I’ve ever met.”
- on his hot sauce.

“Mr. Nakamota, who’s the father of Pac-Man, he presented me with an award... for having done the world’s first perfect game. So sometimes when I’m with someone: ‘Oh, you think you know more about the games than the people who made them?’ Ah, yeah. They told me I do.”

"No! What? How’s that even possible?”
“Coz I’m Billy Mitchell.”
- after doing an impossible move on Pac-Man.

“In front of what we believed was the 20 best players in the world, I played him a game of Donkey Kong. He got 190,000 in his game. I got 849,000 points on my first guy. That was the end of the questions. I forever put him in his place. My gameplay absolutely intimidated him.”
- versus Steve Sanders, 1983. Sanders claimed to be the best Donkey Kong player in the world.

“Basically he walked away with head down. Humbled. I’ve pointed out to Steve that he’s the person he is today because he came under the wrath of Bill Mitchell.
- again on the match-up with Sanders.

“There’ll always be the argument that video games are meant to be played for fun... But competitive gaming - when you wanna attach your name to a world record, when you want your name written into history - you have to pay the price.”

“Billy Mitchell always has a plan.”
"You can lose your life, but don't lose the tape.."

Billy Mitchell to courier when posting his 1,000,000+ point game score of Donkey Kong via VHS...

Whiplash. Intense!

If you have even the slightest passion/appreciation for drumming/jazz check this out.

I honestly don't know what they could have done better for this so a 10/10 for mine.
Even if you don't. I have no passion for drumming on its own but would still consider this close to, if not the movie of the year.
I saw this on Friday night and it's a stunning movie.

Definitely one of the films of the year - don't miss it. (you don't need to be a jazz/drumming aficionado to find it a stunning movie but it probably adds a bit to the experience)

Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Better, if bloated, sequel.

Francis Lawrence's assured direction was a welcome relief after Gary Ross butchered the first movie.

Plus I'll watch any movie Michael Arndt has, or shares, a screenwriting credit.

Now up to speed for Mockinjay...

Do people watch the movie or read the books first?

Because I read the first one, then watched the first Hunger Games.

Left feeling extremely disappointed at how the movie turned out (loved the book).

Then watched the 2nd one, and haven't read the book yet, and absolutely loved the movie.

But I guess I wasn't alone in thinking the 1st movie sucked and the 2nd one was a LOT better.

Not sure how to approach this one.

Generally, don't get caught up in the "book v movie" thing. Try to let them stand on their own terms. Of course, that gets a bit tricky when you really love a book.

Much like Twilight and Harry Potter, I'm definitely not the target audience for The Hunger Games series.

So I'll watch the movies but won't invest in the books...

I've not read any of the books but the second movie was much better than the first one.

It was shit.

Basically an entire movie of filler, designed to milk everything they can from the series.

Anyone listen to that movie guy on triple j?

Absolutely rips into Mockingjay and bags the hell out of it.
Yes but he's on triple j so he's already lost at life.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Well, that was unexpected.

Pleasant surprise for the most part. But there were times when I wished someone, anyone, everyone, slapped some sense in Katniss. FFS, girl!!!

Then there was the third act. Bit of a fizzer. Could've been a thrilling climax with one minor tweak.

But from what I've read online, the movie is pretty faithful to the book. Perhaps too faithful for fear of pissing off fans...

Well keep in mind they're only adapting half a book. I doubt there's thrilling climax halfway through the book.

(I've not seen it yet)

Yeah, I get that... f@%k that! :D

Bet anything someone brought it up. Writer, producer, director, whatever. But sure as hell the studio knocked it down straight away.

Also, before the movie, the M&Ms ad asking you to turn off your mobile phone had just finished.

Right on cue, someone's mobile phone rings...

Chef - Foodgasm. That grilled cheese sandwich was a work of art. A work of ****ing art. Can appreciate a lot of things about the film, don't have a bad word to say about it. 8/10

Two Days, One Night - Is there a better actor or actress working right now than Marion Cotillard? She's devastatingly brilliant in this. Am unfamiliar with the Dardenne brothers` work, but want to see more. Have a lot more foreign films to check out from this year, but this set the bar pretty high. 9/10.

The Mule

Like what they've done in releasing it online and all that.

Unfortunately, I didn't like the movie at all.

Snoozer is a chore to sit through...

The Hunger Games: Mockinjay Part 1

while the movie was good and I enjoyed it, when I ended I just felt that story could of been told in half the time. Clearly made that movie for the sake of making extra millions $$$$

Maze Runner - Trailers made it seem kinda cool in an adventurous and daring way similar to the later Harry Potter sequels.

Does anyone else think it's better than 5/10 for any of the above qualities or just another cash-in albeit Hunger Games..?
