Changes vs North Melbourne

what good form ! , an sanfl match and 1 nab cup game , he needs confidence in his body and ability to be affective in the AFL, we have put him in after a small patch of good form and then he has 5 mins of effectiveness and gets dropped , i want another 3 weeks of 3+ goals and over 8 marks before he gets in , which if he does that will get a chance at the eagles at home against there 1 man defense

Last year he spent 12 weeks averaging over 3 goals a game and leading the Ken Farmer, so the people who didn't want him picked just shifted the goalposts.

Neither Schulz nor Westhoff has fired a shot in 2015. Schulz especially looks like his body is struggling.

Why does Butcher have to jump through hoops to get selected? Surely just being in our current best 22 fit players is good enough?

We've seen Butch at AFL level and we've seen him fluff his chances it's no surprise they wanna see more from him than others.
I'm just curious why does it take some a few weeks to show (or not show) what they have? i love Jake Neade but in all honesty how did he get a gig after the Freo game and Butch didn't?

Put him in? You mean when he came in after a late withdrawal? And played a better game then our 2 regular talls. You make it sound like he had an extended run and showed no improvement. It wasn't his best game but hardly banishment worthy. He dropped out again for structural reasons so it is fair for people to expect he is still around the mark.

Not sure what my feelings are on selections this week, on one hand i'm glad Neade/Redden were dropped & stoked Krak & Young are back in the side as they'll add to our versatility around the ground, but i'm a little unsure on how AhChee will go in his debut & don't think Mitchell will be sub like he should be.

Another slight concern is we likely dropped/rested Kane because we didn't have a match up that needed a tagger but Wells is still named in their side & could run riot if not watched carefully. Overall I think the team selected is slightly better than last weeks but would've gone with Butch > Mitchell.

Alright!! i don't wanna rag on Butch any further he's a PAFC player & I hope he kicks ass and proves all the doubters including me wrong

Yep.

It's the second year in a row he's been in the side at the start of the season because the coaches recognise the need to maintain structure, and it's the second year in a row he's performed well enough to keep his spot, only to be dropped, perform well at SANFL level, then he's not even an emergency.

Young :thumbsu:
Krak :thumbsu:

Mitchell I don't particularly like, but I get. I can see why somebody would see the way we played against Sydney and say that we need more run. Colquhoun would be a better option for that role but it's probably best for him to get a few games at SANFL level first.

Ah Chee is the one I don't get. I don't really see what a slow inside mid who struggles around the ground is going to offer us at Etihad. Should've been Butch to replace Redden.

Or rest Kane as it was pre-planned plus could see his 300th at home?

Selection preferences aside, hopefully last weeks meek effort against the swannies was just a bad game out of the system.

This week the long penetrating kickers of the footy, eg Polec and Pittard, have to take their chances and hopefully tonk a few from around the 50.
We had 4 or 5 seasons of the backwards and sideways BS not that long ago, and whilst that stuff has to be used from time to time it simply doesn't work as the basis of a successful game plan, and I doubt Kern would coach that way.

because every time he has been selected the last three years he has struggled. you have to admit (without excuses) he hasnt done anything to put his selection beyond doubt.

the pressure is definitely on schulz and hoff though. they need to fire but they also have alot of runs on the board in comparison. schulz 60 odd afl goals last year compared to butch 30 sanfl goals. there is no comparison....

As much as I'd love to see Butcher in, I kinda like this selection. The Krak has had a cracker, K Mitch love or hate he works hard, Youngy has been on the cusp for so long.

Ahhrchee I'm not so sure about, assume he'll be sub?

Gotta have faith guys

You'd be fine if you were arguing along the right line, but both Mitchell and Krakouer have had just as many or more games than Butcher for Port Adelaide and both have played poor football the point that I never wanted to see them in our colours again.

Key forwards take longer to develop, we absolutely need to get games into him so we aren't up shit creek later in the year if we get an injury to Schulz or Westhoff.

I totally disagree that he struggled last year. He struggled in the game against North, as you'd expect as a developing 3rd tall in a team getting smashed in the midfield. Overall, he was performing as you'd expect for a 20 game KPF.

The selectors have shown that they'll punish Butcher instantly for an off performance. It's time they showed that they can reward him for good form. At this stage, Lobbe will hopefully come back and Butcher wont be required, but with that tall out, we really, really needed to use this time to develop Butch while he is confident and playing good footy.

we all do, but we also have to be realistic about where he is right now.

No, we need to be realistic about where the entire team is right now. And where we are is in a position with two aging KPFs who haven't fired a shot in 2015, and we've just dropped a ruckman and moved Ryder to full time ruck duty.

We traded in Ryder because we understood that we needed an tall to help out Lobbe and provide a target up forward. We've again thrown away that need for structure after 2 games.

I think most of our issues with run in the Sydney game came from picking Redden at the selection table. As soon as Impey (a runner) was injured, we had to persist with a guy who was jogging on the spot for most of the game.
