The never ending Priddis debate - part II

Priddis had one of his better days today. Yes he stuffed a few things up - but so did most players

Kicked a goal, set a couple up - and was probably our toughest in the stoppages with some quality clinch tackles, tackles that often we miss

Bunch of players turned the ball over at some point (Yeo and Sheed included). Wasn't top 5 for me but certainly played a good game.

Honestly this thread is kind of moot until we really have at least a few more midfielders who could legitimately replace him - Duggan, Yeo and Sheed are all getting plenty of midfield time and even Nelson featured around the stoppages in his short time on field tonight. Hutchings about the only like-for-life we have, and I'm not convinced our midfield is quite contested enough to function well without at least one player who is more dedicated to contesting the bounces.

That said, I see Simpson doing a lot to reduce our reliance on him in the middle and hopefully by season's end he'll play less of a central role in our team. But right now he does play an important role and he played it well tonight.
I agree, you can see how dynamic we look with all the young players running through the midfield, it's made a huge difference to the way the team is playing. I'm not saying Priddis played a bad game, I just don't think it was anything particularly special, there were other players that deserve more credit in this game.

Credit where credit is due, he has been playing well and knowing his limitations. Doesn't looks so bad when he avoids kicking it where possible.

Didn't see the turnover that nearly cost us the game near the end?

Which one? The one by Butler, or Sinclair, or Hill? There were loads of turnovers in the last 5 minutes; that tends to happen, especially for someone whose possessions are contested two-thirds of the time. For some reason the turnovers by Butler (5 clangers) and Sinclair (6) and Hill (ran himself into trouble then handballed to nobody, like 60m out from goal) get ignored while a much less egregious turnover by the board's whipping boy gets magnified.

Nope I noticed them, but this isn't the Butler, Sinclair or Hill thread.

We have enough players who are more dynamic and offer so much more so we don't need to play priddis

Just out of interest why do you always type it priddiss? It makes me think of Voldemorte every time you do.
No idea , probably cos he ss super sports . When you think about it iss and is iss is more phonetically correct to how people say it . Not taking the pis

Congratulations for summing up one side on the argument 5000+ posts in

Rubbish who do you think was feeding the ball to all our dynamic players all day ?
We don't want shuey , yeo , gaff on the ground or stuck inside the contest where they can't use their great attributes .
Priddis played his role very well today and should get some acknowledgement for it .

*yawn and around and around in circles we go

For starters he wasn't and each of those guys did as much if not more inside work which was more effective

Each one of those guys also has an inside game (also better than priddiss')

'Inside only mids' is what is rubbish and is extinct

I've been as big a Priddis critic as anyone but he has played some useful games so far this year and this was one of them. I think there definitely are more options in the midfield at the moment and that is what we have been screaming for. This has helped Priddis as he can now look at pure clerances and getting the ball from in close leaving the runners on the outside as options for NN taps. Looks much more balanced! Also it seems he is not jogging up and down the ground as much and maybe resting more in the forward half. This reduces the number of times the opposition run off him. In this role, he has certainly earned his game and those that don't want to give some credit where credit is due, would seem to be as obstinate as those who couldn't see the obvious faults which have existed for some time. He is still an average footballer though and I still can't understand how he won the Brownlow

He is a strange footballer.
Every time his game is rated it is either shit or BOG.
He played ok, his stats inflate his game.
And that last clearance was a regulation pick up of ground ball after all of the Ports mids who had nothing to lose played Russian roulette and sprinted forward of the contest immediately for the ball to bobble out the back.
It's the same as Shuey's last goal. It should be done, it's just great it sealed the game...in isolation it's execution of regular skills.

I'm humbled some what... we seem to have found a way to win with him in the team which is something I didn't think possible. Kudos to Simpson, it's great to see a team with a plan ...ok will take my gushing to the Simpson thread.

It's weird though, he looks at his worst when the taps go straight to him, he always seems so flat footed. I think he's been better on the hff than some thought he would be because one of his underrated skills is reading the ball off the front of packs quite well. I disagree about players running off him though, I reckon there were about 3 or 4 times where I saw players Priddis was running with in the middle of the ground lose him completely, run away and gain possession of the ball further up the field.
The thing about his game today is that it was a good game, but it wasn't a great game. I get sick of people (and not talking about you) coming in here banging on like Priddis played like a world beater when in reality he just had a good solid AFL game.

I have no idea how you can make this post, let alone have two people like something that is so obviously false.

"Each of those guys" clearly did not do "as much if not more inside work" than Priddis. He had 21 contested possessions; next highest on the club was Yeo with 12 and Masten with 11. He had 9 clearances; next best was LeCras with 6 and then Hill, Nic Nat and Shuey with 3 each. So no, nobody else did as much inside work as Priddis in this match.

Look, I don't like Masten. Everything about him annoys me - his poor contested ball play, his lousy efficiency, his hair, his tattoos, etc. But I can acknowledge when he had a good game, as he did today. When Priddis plays a legitimately good game, as he did against Port, and people still say he's a bum who should be dropped, or wasn't one of the 10 best Eagles in the match, it just devalues your legitimate criticisms of Priddis and makes you look like someone with an unreasonable vendetta whose opinion should be ignored.

Shuey: 6 contested possessions, 3 clearances, 6 tackles. 17 uncontested possessions.

Gaff: 4 contested possessions, 1 clearance, 0 tackles, 19 uncontested possessions.

Yeo: 12 contested possessions, 1 clearance 3 tackles 11 uncontested possessions.

Priddis: 21 contested possessions, 9 clearances, 8 tackles, 10 uncontested possessions.

Seriously, Shuey and Gaff in particular had to have somebody feeding them the ball on the outside. Who was it if not Priddis?
(surprised Shuey played so outside given he has a decent inside game but it worked)

Shuey was very inside last weekend

He is a genuine line breaker with quality skills. If we have others to feed him the ball - all the merrier

He's had two crackers in a row with very contrasting styles

How did you rate his game today out of interest? I'd say he was somewhere around the 8-10 mark if I was ranking everyone from the team.

I agree he does look worse when the ball goes straight to him and that has been part of the problem as it seems the rucks have been directed to do so and too often he is not moving. I think you also reinforced the point I was making in that he is not an elite footballer. He does read the play well and against the giants set up a few really good attacking handballs. Both last week and this he was a valuable player and I would prefer that sort of game to those where people rave about him because he got x number of touches. In the role he has been playing of late and given the improvement of Sheed and addition of Yeo, the midfield is looking much more balanced and Priddis's weaknesses less obvious and damaging.
