Yep. Carlisle as a forward is ok without being great. Wouldn't be worth our first pick plus player /young/Moore/ Oshea that we would at least have to cough up

As a d fender he is bloody ace. But with trengove there not really needed , and trengove is a better leader so not worth turfing a great team guy for Carlisle in defence.

As a forward we couldn't play shultz Ryder Carlisle in our forward line or have one constantly on the bench, much less fit westhoff , lobbe , carlile , trengove and hombsch together.

I could see it being Courtenay Dempsey. Free agent, good mates with Ryder, seemingly out of favour with Essendon, and would fit our running gameplan. He was gonna be my next pick in Portia's recruit game before she disappeared from the board.

This would be my guess too.

Polec was supposed to be lazy too, but what I don't quite get is why we would want him? We have just resigned Broadbent and I can't see Pittard going anywhere. Seems like a lot to pay for a position we have in spades.

Also a player's 'draft worth' may be quite different this year with GWS and Sydney both needing multiple early picks to secure their academy talent. They may have to offload some players but also may be willing to swap some picks around. A late 20s to mid 30s for an O'Shea or Moore type may be able to be swapped around for an upgrade.

I can see us looking at one mid, one KPP and one small forward with a Krak upgrade and rookie ruckman.

ok i just read the bombers thread on him. I dont want him. all i kept reading was lazy, bad attitude and a poor kick.

There's always a risk trading in under performing players from other clubs. Some times it pays off in spades, some times it doesn't.

With free agency, we get a free roll of the dice this year, we should use it.

free agency isnt generally as free as it seems. its paying a player more than he is generally worth (salary) in return for not trading for him.

as long as we dont pay him crazy money, and he knows that he needs to earn his spot then OK. it could be argued that white has gotten a bit of a free rids at times due to him being a free agent and promising him opportunities.

I'd like to see those arguments.

Also, it's usually the top tier free agents that are paid more. White is a great example of a free agent on the same money as their previous club but a longer contract. Other free agents are just seeking more AFL opportunity.

Dempsey is 28, I think.
He has a radar like interaction with Ryder, but I'm not sure that this is enough to warrant tracking him

Free agency is the best thing ever for mid level Matt White type players. Absolutely hate the way it has changed movements for high profile players like Goddard, Franklin and Dangerfield.

All our efforts should be aimed at targeting a young KPF. This is the clubs biggest need going into the next few seasons and failing to secure one will be detrimental to our flag propositions. I don't care how we go about getting one, if it means trading a decent player and a high pick then so be it.

Dixon should be on our radar, the kid would probably benefit and flourish in a more stable club environment.

George Hewett is supposed to be having a great season for Sydney's reserves. He's is a classy inside mid who is racking up possessions. Hewett is out of contract at the end of the year and hasn't played in the league team. Sydney has massive depth for inside mids and they have trade restrictions on them based on cola being phased out. Maybe he is homesick!

The question is, why would a KPF come to Port? I know the arguments re money and a potential premiership but we have 3 tall KPFs in our first 22 for probably another 2 years at least. If we were to get Hawkins, we couldn't play Westhoff, Schulz and Ryder, one would have to drop out. Dixon and Day are first 22 players at their own clubs, why would they come here? Gorringe can't get a game for an injury and form ravaged Suns side - clearly not worth a list spot. Why would a Lycett type leave West Coast because he isn't getting opportunities to come to Port to not get opportunities? The only chance that such a player would get is when there are injuries and no one is going to move just for that level of chance. There aren't going to be any young KPFs willing to move in order to wait 2-3 years until Schulz retires nor is the cash required to get them a worthwhile investment. Better to continue working the draft and hoping one of the lads comes on. Obviously if someone wants to move then that is a different story but just not convinced someone of the Day/Dixon quality can be shaken loose.

I agree, I think the issue is, in part the unfair and unrewarding compensation - why keep players when your compensation will often be equally advantageous? Dale Thomas netted a higher pick than Lance Franklin - crazy!

Can't see us being too involved in FA though - we have a solid 22, it would cost a lot to get a player to knock one of them out.

We have one KPF in our first 22. A tall utility and a ruck-forward don't count.

Theoretically struggling to fit Ryder and Westhoff into the same team if we had another genuine KPF sounds like the most pleasant of pleasant headaches.

What has ever happened to some of your young second tier players, Shaw, O'Shea and Neade all seem to have gone backwards. Especially Shaw looked like breaking into the team mid last year.

Every person who from now on who suggests the novel idea of trading for a young gun kpf should be required to

A) name the young kpf

B) name why he would choose to come to port over staying where he is , or us over another club

Is it money? How can we offer more than anyone else? Is it success ? Because that isn't a given ? Is it our clubs culture and our coach? Cause every clubs supporters reckon the same about their club. Is it go home factor?

Also name who and what we are trading out to land this young outstanding key forward.

It's not some miracle cure. Maybe we get lucky , but if we want a gun key forward we are going to have to draft and put time into developing one.

Shaw is still young , was injured at the start of last year then powered through late in the year. This year has played a bit in the backline while we play harvey forward. Now has a small injury that will sideline him for a little while.

Oshea just has a lot of competition for his spot. Also Oshea is a guy with strong strengths and weak weaknesses if that make sense , so Hinkley seems to value other guys over him. Neade comes in and out of the side , still only young and developing though. Oshea would definitely be playing in a weaker side.

Shaw has chronic OP basically been out since January. O'Shea and Neade only played like 20 games between them last year. Played 4ish this year so on track for similar, given they both take a while to get going during the season. Ryder, Krakeour and Amon have hurt their opportunities more than anything. Haven't gone backwards at all just others better right now.
