Id like to see the AFL take away the draft option until they have spent x amount of years in the AFL. Puts the pressure back on clubs to get a trade done, and pay fair value being they cant walk to the draft where it is likely they get to where they want. Even if AFL has to mediate more. If the player really wants to leave to go home they can sit out 12 months and re-enter the draft the following year.

Open up FA to compensate, but also have incentives for players to stay, long service bonus that remain outside the cap.

I suspect that if Hawthorn or Richmond were genuinely interested and offered a good deal he'd accept. It sounds like he wants to play in Melbourne, the fact he chose Collingwood isn't that big a deal. What's more important is the lack of interest other clubs have shown in him and the fact that even if they did, I don't think any Victorian clubs will be willing to part with what Brisbane want for him.

Carlton are very interested and have already indicated they will take him the PSD if he gets there. Moreover it appears they have more trade currency with players that Brisbane are reportedly interested in. Bell and Casboult for example.

I don't think two picks in the 20's is a bargain (which is my guess of what our best offer is). We traded Wellingham who was in his early 20's and a quality player in a premiership team for less than that. What Brisbane are demanding is unacceptable because we can't provide it. If their not willing to come to a compromise then they suffer the consequences of losing Aish - not us, we don't lose anything.

The paradigm shift is that the feeder club, out of desperation, has adopted a self destructive strategy that makes little sense at all. That's fine, Collingwood doesn't get punished by this. Neither does Aish who will probably still end up in Melbourne somewhere on a pretty hefty contract even if it is for Carlton. Aish would be useful for us but is not an urgent priority and by the looks of things isn't a priority for anyone. Brisbane are seriously overrating him as a player atm. It's not like he is Treloar where the threat of the draft carries a lot weight.

I used to be a fan of this idea, but when I thought about it some more it occurred to me that actually that would be worse for clubs like Brisbane, in fact worse for struggling clubs in general.

Effectively it means that successful teams who can minimise list turnover get a higher salary cap.

On the GH5, we lost over 3000 points (what we received vs what we cost - all players being <3 yrs service, that is probably the most accurate measure).

3000 points is worth Pick 1.

That means that on average, we lost 600 points on EACH trade.

Aish cost pick 7 - 1,644 points. If we get back Collingwood's 2nd round pick (26), that is 729 points - effectively losing pick 20.

The precedent here is that players have in the past got to the end of their 2 year contract and demanded a trade. Aish knows the history, and has done exactly the same. Every time this happens to us, we average a loss of an early 2nd round pick.

Because of this, the board have determined that it now club policy not to trade players with =< 2 years service. Redden is going to be traded because he has given >2 years service. Aish has not. Aish will most likely be made an example for this. Lethal has stated this, and deliberately said that it is nothing against James, but simply that the club has to make a stand.

So if we accept a 2nd rounder for Aish, we lose 800 points. If we accept nothing for Aish, we lose 1600 points. That means that in order for it to be worth our time, our hardline stance has to dissuade ONE future player from requesting a trade after two years.

Seems like a good gamble to me.

To be honest mate, you are simply a supporter and have absolutely and utterly no idea period what your club/list management/coaching department need or will offer for any player. Just like we don't know either. Stop making statements like you think you have it covered.

You regulate it to some extent. Dont think it exists anymore but there use to be a similar system with the veteran's list. Think if they were at the club 10 years you could put a portion of their salary outside of the cap. For each player you add to the list though, the portion goes down.

So if you had 1 player and 30% of their contract is outside of the cap, but if you add a 2nd then you could only do 15% each, a 3rd meant 5% or whatever. So the more players you added the less you got out of it.

Think they could do a similar system and implement it along side the FA qualification rules so teams can actually compete against FA.

Also givesplayers incentive to stay, as if they change club the counter (be it 8 years or whatever) resets. So the longer you stay at 1 club the more you get as a bonus. Of course, being able to shop yourself around via FA still gives you a chance to get a better contract or move.

CARLTON has signalled its interest in securing James Aish in the pre-season draft if Brisbane holds firm on its dramatic trade ultimatum.

A host of rivals believe Brisbane will eventually back down and allow the 2013 national draft’s No. 7 pick to be traded to Collingwood.

Carlton is an interested observer, with grand plans for the pre-season draft’s No. 1 pick but aware one option is to effectively snap up Aish for nothing.

The Blues met with Aish during the season on the Gold Coast, sparking the ongoing controversy that saw the Lions believe he would leave them.

Collingwood will have an array of quality early picks given Ben Kennedy, Paul Seedsman and Nathan Freeman will all depart, meaning it has the means to make a trade.

It has privately noted that Brisbane cannot ask for a priority pick because of a lack of talent then willingly allow Aish to walk because of principle.

But the Lions believe this is their line-in-the-sand moment, unwilling to allow another quality talent to depart for under market odds.

Jared Polec (pick five in 2010), Billy Longer (pick eight in 2011), Sam Docherty (pick 12 in 2011), Patrick Karnezis (pick 25 in 2010) and Elliot Yeo (pick 30 in 2011) have all left the club.

Contracted midfielder Jack Redden will leave for West Coast, Stef Martin had a trade to Victoria knocked back and Sam Mayes has interested in moving back to South Australia.

The Herald Sun understands the Lions recently put an official submission to the AFL calling for draftees to sign an initial three-year deal.

They believe all first and second-round picks should be contracted for that period, allowing their club a better chance to retain them long-term.

That submission came after the AFL called for feedback on standard contracts, with more talks next year during collective bargaining agreement discussions.

The Lions have told their young players to give them four years at the club while they turn around their fortunes and prove to them why success is around the corner.

It is understood the player union is open to more debate about that initial contract but would want to know what wage third-year players would be allocated.

The AFLPA also believes it is beholden upon a club to provide an elite culture that sees players wanting to stay.

Aish’s manager Liam Pickering believes a deal can easily get done if Brisbane relent on their hard-line approach.

“This year wasn’t a great year for James and whether that was about injury? He broke his jaw and had a finger injury and he is a quality young player,’’ he said as Aish demanded a trade.

“He is still only 19, he was one of the babies of the draft. He has got a hell of a lot more footy in front of him.

“Nathan Freeman has requested a trade so there would be a pick there at 24, Seedsman might be on the way out.

“So there could be a number of picks there in the 20s but that’s something the clubs need to work out.”
