Cross was a way more accomplished player than Ray

Cross was high production also, though his kicking was limited which let him down forward of centre

Disagree pups, my point was they were both typical Bulldog players of
the time they had an elite trait, their overhead marking but sadly time
slowed down when they had the ball and not in a Scott Pendlebury
kind of way. Cross could have thirty and 24 would be handballs, if
handball didn't exist in the game Cross would not have lasted as long
as he did. Terrific endurance and preparation though left nothing to
chance and earned every game.

There have been few good number 1s in our history. But I can tell you that if Elle McPherson was on our list I'd give her 1.

I was pretty young when Purser played, however I can vividly remember thinking wow.. a ruckmen is not supposed to be that athletic, he's like another midfielder out there.

Ray was packet icing.

Cross was professional, but not perfect, cake.

both very good in the air for their size, but you felt uneasy as a fan
when they had ball in hand. Ray for his disposal and execution and
Cross for his slow loopy floater kicks and propensity to hand ball.

I never felt uneasy when Cross had the ball. His hands were great, and he played within his limitations.

Remember the game Vs Collingwood seasons back immortalmike at
Etihad Stadium 2 points down 1 minute approx to go, high ball goes
into the forward 50 and BAM Daniel Cross takes a great grab about
30 metres out dead in front. Take the shot Daniel even if you miss
we still have the ball at our end with time on the clock. No backwards
handball to Griffen under immense pressure ball turned over the Pies
go the full length of the ground and win by eight points. Every one
knew he would try to give it off, especially the Collingwood players.
I said some nice things about Cross on the previous page at least
i thought i did in terms of preparation and getting the best out of
yourself. When Cross had to kick the ball you could read the
barcode on the sherrin from level three.

He played a very good game for us in a final ... Against the pies I think. He's a pretty steady outside link up player. Ok pace and balance but understands how to survive by putting team first and playing disciplined in a team structure. Other positive is he used to play for us and that's good for the vibe.

All of the above might be true but Jarrod Grant is miles better ... And offers us an "x-factor".

I'm not a fan of judging players on a couple of high profile mistakes. Otherwise I'd see Brad Johnson as a choker because of the consecutive misses in 2009 as opposed to the hundreds of clutch goals he kicked.

Agree immortalmike, but iv'e never forgiven Brad Johnson for the Gary
Moorecroft mark that was like nitro circus and Johnson was the ramp.

Johnno did the best he could by diving out of the way to make sure that little flea landed as hard as possible.

But Crossy , God love him , is / was a very ordinary kick of the football.

I think the forwards were pretty happy that the ball was in our team's hands as opposed to the opposition's something that Cross excelled at making sure of.
He wasn't a perfect player but he was a successful cog in a pretty excellent midfield that deserves far more respect than he gets on this board. Much like Matthew Boyd until this year.
